    Electrity works always from garden to house and also in the North Pole. 😳😀

    Funny how one quick zap to the snout can make a polar bear never touch a fence again!

    Bears thought it was some alien sorcery. It’s unreal how superior humans turned out compared to other animals

    I'd be curious to know what kind of voltage/current you're using on those wires? That looks like a fairly large battery hooked up.

    • @joukeprop
      @joukeprop  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The battery is an AGM battery (48Ah) charged by a solar panel. The energiser generates a current of approximately 100 mA at a voltage of 7500V. Touching the wires gives an unpleasant but otherwise harmless experience.

    I hope you get paid well to not have to do this long-term, something always go wrong if you repeat frequently enough

    What if the bear came charging in really fast and busting through really quick if there was a person inside the fence? Could the fence prevent that type of attack?

    • @joukeprop
      @joukeprop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No, it would not. Our system is semi-portable. A next step in safety is using permanent, sturdy poles. In our experience, a polar bear dashing in would be exceptional though. In the 14 summers that we use electric fences we had dozens of polar bear approaches and, if not scared by us, bears were cautious and touched the fence by nose first.

      @@joukeprop I see, so their cautiousness and curiosity won't allow them to just bust through the fence like that. They have to check it out first to see if it's dangerous. Thanks for the response....and 14 summers? I'm jealous.

      I am sure, the researchers trust both, the fence AND a good gun/rifle. The important point is, that the fence saves the bear's life though and makes them learn to keep their distance from human smelling things.

      A gun alone doesn't give you very good protection though, because it would require a person standing guard at all times. If you're in a tent wrapped up in your sleeping bag when a bear attacks, good luck getting the gun out fast enough. A fence and some kind of an alarm gives you more time to react and in most cases it will solve the problem perfectly without killing the bear and decimating an already endangered species even further.
