The bands that are considered the progenitors of heavy metal; Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath, are the "classic" way to start from where it started, and then if they like that style they can branch out to the many, MANY sub-genres of metal.

I saw him on video of a concert in 2006 in Montreux with Purple. He still looks like that.
