This is the way Deep Purple should be sung - I had trouble finding it sung the way I feel it - Thank You for this Paula Kelly version - I'm 89 and needing the right mood...
One of my sweet Mother’s favorite songs. She is 92 and hospice has been called. I’m traveling to see her and I will play this version for her with other songs she loves. I’m sure this is the one she fell in love with.
You're a wonderful daughter Theresa! I have many casette tapes of my Dad playing guitar and singing all the old "Standards". I too learned them when he taught me guitar as a boy. Although growing up playing rock etc., I am fortunate to have these tapes to continue playing with Dad. God bless dear!
I'm so sorry for your loss. It was one of my mother's favorite songs too. When I was in high school she paid me money to learn the song on the guitar and sing it for her. I always think of her when I hear it. She also loved "I'll Never Smile Again".

When a deep purple falls over sleepy garden walls And the stars begin to twinkle in the night In the mist of a memory you wander back to me Breathing my name with a sigh In the still of the night once again I hold you tight Though you're gone, your love lives on when moonlight beams And as long as my heart will beat, lover we'll always meet Here in my deep purple dreams Here in my deep purple dreams When a deep purple falls over sleepy garden walls And the stars begin to twinkle in the night Through the mist of a memory you wander back to me Breathing my name with a sigh In the still of the night once again I hold you tight Though you're gone, your love lives on when moonlight beams And as long as my heart will beat, lover we'll always meet Here in my deep purple dreams Here in my deep purple dreams
This is where Deep Purple Band got its name. On the boat between England and Denmark, Ritchie Blackmore and bassist Nick Simper were interviewed about the new band. It seemed that it actually was during this interview that the band changed it's name to Deep Purple - named after an old song that was a favourite of Ritchie's granny, or something like that. According to an interview with Nick Simper in an old issue of Darker than Blue, the journalist asked them what the name of the band was. Ritchie looked at Nick with a grin, and said "It's Deep Purple". Nick smiled back, and that was it. I think the song might be it
My Mama and Daddy's song... God rest their loving souls. I miss them so very much. I can still see them dancing so beautifully and gracefully together. 😪
Beautiful melody and song which is so nice to hear. I heard the version by Nino Tempo and April Stevens in 1963 and liked it. Timeless it is still good to hear despite the fact the fidelty of 78rpm records was not as good as it is now.
WOW! 20 years before I was born! It's amazing how much music has evolved throughout the years! Kinda freaks me out! Live long and enjoy everyone! God bless you all!
What a wonderful, lovely melody with beautiful poetic lyrics and nostalgic memories of the past. Some memories of the past will never die because they are about someone so special.
They absolutely own it!! Paula Kelly does a fine job, the Artie Shaw version has some beautiful things about it, but Nino and April reimagined it so thoroughly, it's almost a different song. And her speaking the lyrics in the middle part is so damned feminine and sexy, it comes close to giving me heart failure.
I prefer the original versions. Paula Kelly with Al Donohue, Helen Forrest, Bea Wain, Martha Tilton, Bing Crosby, Johnny Mathis - all keep the original feel of the melody by Peter De Rose. One of my favorite songs.

So happy you've found a version that brings back the right memories for you.
Are you still doing good? You have some amazing taste in music
You have the same age as James Dean
Have you ever heard the version by Nino Tempo and April Stevens? They should have been sent to prison for that.
Ritchie blackmore named the band Deep Purple because of Richie's grandma favorite song
Good name 4 a Rock Band too *😁
Beautiful performance. And this song is not easy to sing!
Helen Forrest brought me here Blessings and Hugs 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

April is still alive and 93, Nino is alive and 89. They should be in the R & R HoF.
Well here I am 5 months later. My sweet mother was finally called home to be with our Lord. Had to play this song one more time.

Theresa a beautiful name just like Paula.
I would have loved singing jeepers creepers with Ms Paula.
She was in the movie Sun Valley Serenade with the Glenn Miller Orchestra.
She did the vocals for Lynn Bari. I think that it was her, with the Modernaires in the Chattanooga Choo Choo sequence.
I was suddenly humming this song, remembering it out of the blue. Forever beautiful.
A very sad tune about lost love and fantasy!!!
When a deep purple falls over sleepy garden walls
And the stars begin to twinkle in the night
In the mist of a memory you wander back to me
Breathing my name with a sigh
In the still of the night once again I hold you tight
Though you're gone, your love lives on when moonlight beams
And as long as my heart will beat, lover we'll always meet

This is very much like listening to a radio broadcast in the 1930s,
complete with the reassuring, endearing AM static. Thank you, Croonr1 !
I went through hospice with my mother, who was also 92, 3 months ago. I am glad you played those songs for her.

One of my favorites. Our High School danced band played this lovely tune for us back in 49-50-51 as we twirled our dates around the dance floor.

It's amazing to me how much music has DEvolved.
Paula Kelly foi crooner de Glenn Miller, voz macia, aveludada. Uma das grandes cantoras da era das big bands.

My favorite version.
Sweet and wistful. Grand!
Superb version!
Beautiful
Truly amazing
Exquisite rendition of this fabulous song.
Thank you for sharing.
Oh what a nice sound....m
That's what inspired Ritchie to rename their band from Roundabaout to (forever) Deep Purple, his granny's favorite song!
You must be an American. " Favorite" betrays you ;-)
Granny is never wrong.

Qué bien cantado. Bravo
Love this !
The Ventures have an instrumental version of the song, but this fine vocal performance probably inspired it.
Cantaba bellísimo ríp🌺
My Mom’s as well and she could play piano too. But, that was long ago.Very. Her memories, not mine.
Muito linda essa música. Queria ter vivido nos anos 40 ou 30

Made in 1939,sounds more like 1929,a retro vaudeville sound.
