There're so many players who can run up and down the horn but, only a few can slow the horn down and tell the most beautiful stories. Chad is in a class all by himself!!!!
Beautiful. Chad really has it. Sound, intonation, phrasing...capturing the mood brilliantly. Playing a beautiful melody straight ahead and speaking to the listener in a moving way is what makes a player stand out from the rest. He does make a it a point to show us he has chops to spare. LOL...Chad you are the real deal. Brilliant!!! One of the few young saxophonist out there that has a deep grasp, understanding and respect for the craft. I can listen to this all day.
I've always felt that ballad playing really shows everything a musician is capable of. Chad, you have a GORGEOUS sound to go along with your stellar technique! VERY well played by all in this vid!
Bob Green. I was just going to write your very own words😂😂 Ballad playing sais so much about the music within a musician, specially nowadays because there are so many talented "well oiled machines"
Chad is one of the most intersting soloists of the last 10 years... I really love the way He feels the music... He is a perfect combination of tradition and contemporary... It's a pleasure for my soul when I hear Chad's voice, his sound is just perfect. IMO. Thank You Mr Lefkowitz Brown, thank You...
I am listening well in Korea. I am playing a hotel event with my Russian, European and American friends in Korea. Listening to your performance together May the scent of Jesus fill your performance.
Finally a Chad LB song that I can actually play that doesn’t have insane shredding. I genuinely love your sound and your probably one of my favorite sax players and biggest inspirations
What a beautiful rendition ! Just incredible control of the saxophone with incredible feeling. A rare combination. If only non musicians knew how difficult it is to play the tenor saxophone with the control of a world class symphonic musician along with the feeling of a world class soulful jazz musician. I'm in awe of your ability to play so great on uptempo stuff and then to be able to play a ballad with such incredible control and beauty. Congatulations on your continued success. It's so well deserved. And your rhythm section accompanies you perfectly. They are all amazing !
You can tell pure class when a guy with phenomenal technique at his disposal elects to simply hold on to the last note of the melody because he knows its gna just work beautifully.
Unbelievable. Every jazz artist does this different. I thought Wesla Whitfield was tops, this goes to heaven and stars. Thank you and Jazz on WXPR for playing it.
I have to say Chad, as a Brecker fan boy, that you have my attention. Your sound is captivating, which coupled with a deep musical understanding and grasp of technique really stands you out from the crowd. Great playing man!!
Cabbage Man I'm nowhere near as good as Chad, but my advice would just find that sound you want then practice long tones with that same tone every day. Practicing your sound like that is very good for if you switch equipment, because you'll still sound like the way you want to sound since you practiced that! Idk if half of that made sense (I'm not the best at explaining things), but I hope it can help you out a lil bit!
Cabbage Man Listening and long tones! The number 1 tip any jazz player will give you about improving is listening to people you want to sound like, whether it be tone or improv wise. If you want to sound like Chad, actively listen to him 24/7, not just when your doing chores or homework. When you do long tones, experiment with your throat and embouchure to get closer to the specific sound you want
Great version of this classic! It’s such a beautiful song played instrumentals ! My favorite version is that of Gene Ammons, but you certainly did it justice, great piece!!!
This is in no way a negative comment...... I'm always blown away by the technicality of his playing and although all the fast licks are very impressive, I'm even more impressed when I hear this side of his playing. Very beautiful, melodic lines I could listen to all day. (Michael Brecker worthy)
“ You had me at hello …” Which means … in the first 10 seconds of hearing his sound … his sound is like magic …” “ My Foolish Heart” … This is very beautiful and so expressive … I had an instant flashback to … well, you know … the beautiful and solitary moments in our life where you know that you love someone … or that someone loves you … I have Crocodile tears in my eyes … must be dust or something in my eyes … dang dust!
I love the way you recorded the bass. It sounds like the way bass sounded in the 50s and 60s. Maybe a video about your sound engineering in the future?
It seems like the guy who recorded this is on youtube, but its videos of his performances. Maybe he'll be open to masterclasses one day, or maybe he just records as his day job 🤷♂️
Sweet sax playing! And a tight quartet! Play guitar but appreciate a good horn player! Awesome! Keep it up! Nice video setup as well. Director did a good job there.

God his sound and phrasing is perfect. Chad deserves far more credit for his ballad playing.
Jason Bedford thank you, Jason! That means a lot.
Credit from whom? I think his ballad playing is sublime!
There're so many players who can run up and down the horn but, only a few can slow the horn down and tell the most beautiful stories. Chad is in a class all by himself!!!!
This was my late wife's favourite song and she would have adored your rendition Chad

Any advice on how to achieve a steady and full airy sound like that

2 Mics, one of which is a newer type Inside the F-hole. Also, I was playing very soft.

From such a mellow, rich subtone, to that booming forte in the last chorus. What fuckin' range. Cheese Louise! Beautiful, thanx.
