Tony I just wanted to say thank you so much for posting these tutorials - out of all the instructors I’ve seen on TH-cam your instructions on standards have been the predominant ones to have opened jazz piano up for me. Thank you so much.

Tony the more I watch your videos the happier a feel to having found your channel. It is amazing the way you get your meaning across. What was almost imposible for me to understand, now it is easier and more enjoyable. I could say that I have seen many other good channels, but yours stands out in that you explain in the go with demostrations and a rational pace to make it more digestiable . That`s why now your channel is the number one to come everyday and my favorite one. Thank you again for your great generosity to share. You are the best!

Tony. For a long time I follow you, on the "shadow". In my opinion you are the great teacher of the musicians, that wasn't enough money in the pocket. Because of the work of you on all tutorials, I only can say, long life for you, for the blessing you give for us. Thank you.

Request! I love this tune! This lesson is fantastic for me because of the opportunity for a varied range of extensions! I worked through Autumn Leaves, the use of the Bb and G Blues for a solo then managed to advance to the solo lesson using the diminished, altered and pentatonic scale options. Pretty pleased with myself to be honest, sort of getting there. So Master I was wondering if you could do a lesson on scale choices and constructing a solo over My Foolish Heart. As I said I love this tune so I figure it’s extra motivation to learn more about scale choices for soloing. When you have time is fine, whenever. You really are a terrific teacher and I’m getting so much out of this. So thanks yet again! Z

Thanks, Tony! This is the kind of thing I keep coming back for. I could watch videos in slow motion and copy the exact voicings, but I think that's tedious and not particularly helpful. Your explanations are very helpful for understanding 'how your mind works', as you say, and it's definitely starting to rub off.

    • @PhilDubach
      @PhilDubach 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@danbalocca6540 Thanks. That's not what I was getting at. My point is that even though I could slow it down and copy the voicings one by one, I find I'm learning much more by listening to the explanations, and then working on finding my own voicings. Many other tutorials just show how to play a song, but Tony's explanations help me understand his choices and replicate them myself.

Thanks Tony for playing this amazingly harmonic tune. I do it as a soft Samba. Since Samba is in 2/4, I play singing the lyrics in 1, which is like playin a swing tune in two, and Samba-ing for solos. As a guitar player I have put this in the key of A, which makes it a more friendly guitar key. Jamie Findley has a chord melody for this tune with some nice voicings in the original key on guitar. One thing I like to say about the tune "These Foolish Things" that you've said you're not crazy about, is the version I learned from Ella which I believe had Tommy Flanagan on piano. Really sweet chord changes. I again put it in a guitar friendly key-E, play it as a 12/8 and it's still one of my faves. Thank you for sharing your fantastic playing, singing, and knowledge of the American Songbook!

Hello Tony. How can you not like a song with lyrics like these:
(They don't write them like this anymore.)
"These Foolish Things (Remind Me Of You)"
Oh! Will you never let me be?
Oh! Will you never set me free?
    The ties that bound us
    Are still around us
There's no escape that I can see
And still those little things remain
That bring me happiness or pain
    A cigarette that bears a lipstick's traces
An airline ticket to romantic places
And still my heart has wings
These foolish things remind me of you
A tinkling piano in the next apartment
Those stumbling words that told you what my heart meant
    A fair ground's painted swings
These foolish things remind me of you
You came you saw you conquer'd me
When you did that to me
I knew somehow this had to be
The winds of March that make my heart a dancer
A telephone that rings but who's to answer?
Oh, how the ghost of you clings!
These foolish things remind me of you
First daffodils and long excited cables
And candle lights on little corner tables
And still my heart has wings
These foolish things remind me of you
The park at evening when the bell has sounded
The "Ile de France" with all the gulls around it
    The beauty that is Spring's
These foolish things remind me of you
How strange how sweet to find you still
These things are dear to me
They seem to bring you near to me
The sigh of midnight trains in empty stations
Silk stockings thrown aside dance invitations
Oh, how the ghost of you clings!
These foolish things remind me of you
Gardenia perfume ling'ring on a pillow
Wild strawb'ries only seven francs a kilo
And still my heart has wings
These foolish things remind me of you
The smile of Garbo and the scent of roses
The waiters whistling as the last bar closes
    The song that Crosby sings
These foolish things remind me of you
How strange how sweet to find you still
These things are dear to me
They seem to bring you near to me
The scent of smould'ring leaves, the wail of steamers
Two lovers on the street who walk like dreamers
Oh, how the ghost of you clings!
These foolish things remind me of you

I wonder how it would sound with an F pedal during the reprise of the head and how many chords you could play with this pedal before it sounds "wrong". Four? Eight?

4:47 what would it sound like with the Am7b5 having a B natural in the chord. So ...
    A C Eb G B D
I wonder the best way to notate that chord as well? It's a polychord two triads G major over Am b5.
    Cm9(maj7)/A?
    Am11 b5?
