    Zach (the shorter one and the one who struggled) has Ankylosing spondylitis, an autoimmune condition that affects the spine, which really makes anything physical harder for him.

    • @livewellwitheds6885
      @livewellwitheds6885 3 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      yeah not to mention exercise with chronic pain is generally difficult. ballet/pointe? much more painful and hard. I've had chronic pain my whole life and there's no way I could do what Zach did

    • @cardamonradio
      @cardamonradio 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @live well with EDS not to discount anyone's experience or anything, but a lot of ballerinas do develop chronic pain (especially professionals). Usually, it's in the knees or hips since those are the areas that tend to get stressed the most in ballet. Again, not to say that anyone's experience is any less valid, it's just important to know.

    • @thebadpoet
      @thebadpoet 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @PrinceAlastor there is a world of difference between pain from injury and overuse and pain from chronic autoimmune or auto inflammatory conditions.
      A lot of dancers definitely have pain and a lot get injured and ballet dancers are tough as nails. But when your own immune system is attacking you from the inside out and your synovial fluid is swollen (or, with something like EDS you don’t produce collagen and your joints and connective tissues are so loose that it is actively dangerous to be in a situation where you can hyperextend) the kind of intense movement and positions required by ballet are well nigh impossible.
      I know you don’t want to “discount” anyone’s experience, but as someone with a chronic inflammatory illness it is so exhausting to have able bodied people compare their injuries, pain, tiredness after staying up all night, etc to my situation.

    • @minilea144
      @minilea144 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@thebadpoet i have chronic illness too from birth and I'm more appreciative of people who understand having chronic pain no matter how they got it. It sounds like you are trying to discount others pains because they don't suffer the way you do. It is completely possible to be able bodied and have a chronic inflammatory illness. Zach was prime example until it got worse.

    • @El_Ophelia
      @El_Ophelia 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@thebadpoet Thank you so much for bringing this up. I also have an immune system dysfunction which has left me in chronic pain for decades. There are times when a simple walk around the block will leave me immobile for the next several days. Trying to compare pain that comes from overuse or injuries, or trying to compare acute pain with living with chronic pain 24/7, sometimes when we're not even moving, is a distinction that needs to be made. Thank you for your post!

    • @evilinc333
      @evilinc333 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can definitely start ballet! Lots of studios offer beginning teen or adult classes. It will be easier to get into considering you have some dance experience. If you do end up wanting to pursue ballet professionally it will be more difficult because you started so late, but it is certainly not unheard of if not extremely uncommon. Private lessons are a great resource to catch up to your peers if you have access to them. As you get more experienced there are also many ballet classes available via zoom or online so you can continue to practice at home.

    4:25 lol actually when I didn't know anything about ballet (and I still don't know much because I've been taking classes for only a year) I immediately thought of the Nutcracker

    As you're talking about Eugene, I was thinking about the Pink Martini song "Eugene." I immediately went to "Hey Eugene, do you remember me?" from that song.

    It reminds me of the really little kids classes where there's always one who tries super hard and knows all the moves and one who has no clue and stands at the edge of the stage staring at the audience.

    Routines like that are HARD to learn especially for "non-dancers". I'm impressed that they were able to remember all the moves for 2 dances with such a short preparation time.

    Have you seen “The Swan Club” show in Korea where idols/actresses/a former ballerina did ballet training and performed The Nutcracker End of Year performance with a professional ballet company
