  • Unbricking Anet A8 Controller / Reloading Original Firmware / Upgrading To Skynet With USB Programmer
I was going to make a video installing the 3D / BL touch probe to the Anet A8, but I managed to brick the controller which means it became unresponsive. I had to buy a USB programmer and follow a produced illustrated in the troubleshooting section of the Skynet firmware download folder.
Ebay Affiliate Link of USB programmer I used: goo.gl/LkY5Nu - make sure get the the adaptor as well.

That sync error was probably caused by you flashing the stock Anet firmware back after unbricking it?
I had to use an USBASP to flash a bootloader because my stock Anet board didn't have a bootloader, and I couldn't flash Marlin. The trick is to simply flash the bootloader with the programmer then disconnect, and flash the firmware(non stock) to the board using the Arduino IDE. Flashing the stock firmware using AVRDudes will overwrite the bootloader you flashed previously.

Where would i connect the ubasp on the board?? The top right corner unused connecter next to LCD 2004 ?

Is possible use AVRDUDESS and USB programmer to dump (and then restore) the original firmware? How? Just select "read" on "flash" section? and format?

Great video. I have the same error messages that you had. In my case, I could unbrick it using the FirmwareResetV1.hex with the AVRdudess, using an Usbasp, but I could not burn the bootloader in the Arduino 1.8.5 IDE. Also, no matter what I try, I still cannot load the Marlin firmware. I get the same errors in the Arduino IDE as mentioned previously. Nothing I do gets rid of the white line across the display. I have followed many videos about how to fix my firmware issue, but none have worked. I have the right board loaded and the right usb port set. I've tried both Anet boards in the list. So, I have what looks like a working bootloader because the D1 next to the main chip flashes while the board boots, but nothing happens but white square boxes after that. I'm beginning to think the main chip is bad. Any thoughts would be really appreciated.

My D1 led just stays on, never blinks. Iv dug through the internet and nobody can explain why. Do you know what that means? Thanks

@@kevinjenkins2916 Does your display work properly? I went through all this thinking it was my mainboard, but I learned that when I replaced my display, it fixed the whole problem. That was something that the Anet company doesn't even know about. They sent me a new board thinking it was the board but it wasn't. It was the display board all along. If your display displays words it's probably your mainboard, if it doesn't display anything then you might have a communication problem with your display board. It's been a while since I played with mine, but I think that LED should be blinking right from the start trying to communicate with the display and peripherals.

Just curious, why did you bother with unbricking the Anet board? I would have just thrown a cheap ramps board on it and call it a day. It's a bit more wiring work, but totally worth it. I put a level sensor on my Anet A8, along with a ramps and the AM8 frame. After all of that, it's a solid printer.
The problem with flashing changes to the Anet board, is you have to use Skynet's version of Arduino IDE. Those Anet boards are very picky.
Another great informative video! Keep making them! I really enjoyed watching your CNC build. I would love to build one myself soon!

I wanted to get to know this machine as it came but you are right. It really needs some work and my gut instinct is to change the control board. I've been also sent a Tevo Tarantula - which actually was harder to build than the Anet as it came with a manual which was all over the place. Anyway too many things to do. I need to start cutting the new CNC plates out as well but I'm hesitating to start because I don't want to accidentally ruin my material.

Understand having to many projects. I like to improve things and make them better. I feel like those printers are great places to start in 3D printing. They give you the ability to print out parts to make the printer better, or to make a better printer.
Any chance you are going to be selling the cut pieces to build the CNC you designed? Just like a 3D printer, once you have one, it's easy to build another.

Hi ! can I use marlin to burn the boot loader like this one ?

I guess so - it's all arduino based.

The CH340 usb/serial on the Anet is the culprit. #&$%!
Was it when you enabled Z_MIN_PROBE_REPEATABILITY_TEST that it went tits up? was for me and others too aparently. All too often the Skynet for Anet group are a little too tribal (and/or "facebooky") to be helpful.
But man, out of the box, the output from the Anet is amazing, equalling printers at twice the price or more. If you're using an external mosfet for the heatbed then the Anet controller is fine. Unless it's actually broken why replace it?

I think it might have been... but I can't remember now. It's a nice printer - going to try a longer print before I do any major rebuilds.

Mine just went tits up installing the BLTouch. I actually didn't turn up the repeatability option, but ended up in the same place. I actually flashed the firmware a number of times yesterday getting the nozzle centered and then getting the probe centered and all was well until this morning when I tried to flash 'babysteps' and the USB wasn't working. I am trying to think of the last thing I flashed but I can only recall all the offsets for centering. If I can recall, i will update.

USBasp will sort you out. Be sure to disconnect everything that can draw current on the controller before you flash otherwise it might not work

buggyland Thanks for the tip! It doesn't appear to be all that difficult, just annoying lol

I enabled Z_MIN_PROBE_REPEATABILITY_TEST in Marlin and corrupted it also, bought another mainboard & then did it again! so it is surely the code, maybe overwriting the bootloader area of flash. I'll replace the CH340 & see if that fixes it, though I can't see how it could have been damaged.
