The only reason why I know about this HanKy code is a local gay bar that we visit from time to time. This bar does THEME NIGHTS on certain days. It's a lot of fun. They do country western, drag, leather and all kinds of stuff. One of those theme nights was 80's kind of custom. At the door, they had a color-coded reference guide and based on that you would buy a bandana and then be able to get in! It was a wonderful scene to see.
I am glad that earrings are not like common thing anymore,... It is not like I would say that someone can´t wear it, or it is bad, when someone does have it. I just really hate when I see sexy man and than I see the earring, it really took down so much attractivity for me...
Earrings are a personal thing, like wearing your hair long, or having tattoos or facial hair. It is so personal. For me, I've learned that handsome is handsome, no matter what little changes in appearance one makes.
My hankies are always worn on my left back pockets (Master/Top). I still wear my hankies; they are in order Black/Yellow/Blue and sometimes Red. I also wear my keys on my left side all the time. I remember the whole earring thing as well, Jack. I had no idea that the hanky had gone along the wayside, LOL. Now I really feel old, I don't go out any more anyway, I've kept my senior boys/slaves that I've meet at friend's house parties or Leather get togethers, and most are in my age group which is so much better in my case.
I'm sure the hanky codes will work today at a gay bar, especially a leather bar... but I don' t think younger lads, say, under 40, will know what they mean, unless the bar posts the color codes.
They were used since the 60s and were actually popular in the 70s in certain bars.
I guess I did really go to bars until the late 70s, so you may be right.

I never saw that kind of event, but the hanky codes were advertised in the local bar papers, every one knew them.... back then.
