I was 23 when Stevie died. I grew up near where his helicopter crashed. I happened to be back home visiting my parents on that day. I heard the news on the radio and was in shock. I think the fact that it happened so close to home added to the shock. There are a lot of great guitarists and rating them is very subjective. Having said that, Stevie Ray Vaughn was in his own category. I've never heard anybody come close to his gobsmacking creativity. His genius was breathtaking.

I had the pleasure of seeing SRV 3 times.... first time was in a very small venue , in Bloomington Indiana.
His Brother Jimmy and the Fabulous Thunderbirds opened the show. It was a great show . At the end of Stevies set , his brother Jimmy carried out a chair and a double neck guitar . Jimmy sat in the chair and Stevie , while over jimmy shoulders , played the lead part and jimmy played the lower neck , the rhythm parts. Then they switched ! You could tell that they had done this before.
The last time i saw him , was at a big outdoor venue at Deer Creek , In Indianapolis Indiana. Stevie had just got clean and sober and was feeling great. The Sun was setting in the west as the moon was coming up in the east. He made a remark about it
"God Must Love You Indianapolis".. It was one of the best shows i have ever seen!!! . Shortly after that , the world lost the best guitar player ever . Much Love S.R.V. "if I dont see ya again in this world , i'll see ya in the next .... Dont Be Late ..... Dooonn't beeee laaaate "!

Even though it's a cover of Jimi Hendrix song he played it different every time. He was a true Blues guitarist who played with a lot of soul.
I got to see him in concert a few months before he was killed (1990). I stood there mesmerized the entire time with my jaw dropped (figuratively). I've been to a lot of rock concerts and have seen many great guitarists, but he was on another plane. I think of him as the Mozart or Beethoven or Bach... of the guitar - a virtuoso.
So sad he was taken in his mid thirties. I'm grateful I was able to see him play.

When Stevie plays he goes into an alternate plane of existence. Stevie couldn’t read music. This song was written by Jimmy Hendrix. Stevie was an admirer of Jimmy. Stevie channeled the music through his soul and into his fingers. He embellished on Jimmy’s four minute version of the song and went over nine minutes by improvising. I highly respect and admire Jimmy’s guitar chops, but even he would have been blown away with how Stevie played his song. Stevie is the G.O.A.T.

The beauty of Blues and Jazz is that you don't write it, you feel it. You can find several videos on youtube of the same song, and it's never the same. In fact in 1987, he did a better version where he played 1/2 the song behind his back. Stevie couldn't even read music. He had no idea what key anything was in. He heard, in this case listening to Hendrix do it over and over, and then he played it. His keyboardist, who is not in this encore, is the real hero. SRV played everything down 1/2 step to Eb, which is fine if you are a guitarist, but for a keyboardist is hell. GOAT, and under appreciated because he wasn't in a hair band in the 80's.

No you don't write that. There's the main music writen by Jimmy Hendricks. But Stevie would always make a tune his own by putting his soul in it. There's always a part of a song where he just snaps and when he snaps, great things happen. And it's not always as flashy as this is. Take a listen to "Lenny" a tune he did for his wife Lenny.

    • @sjd5750

Lenny, live at El Mocambo, imho, tops them all...It shows he's not just all balls to the wall, but can also play nice and tasty, yet, it's still balls to the wall on how good it is.

Great question. Eric Clapton said sometimes while he's performing, he has to "stop" in his head to figure out what he could/should do next and that he never saw Stevie having to do that. He was a channel for the soul of blues, of music. This is a Jimi Hendrix song. Stevie asked Mr. Hendrix if it was ok to play Jimi's song. Not only did Mr. Hendrix give his permission, but he also gave Stevie Jimi' gear, his Wah Wah pedal and something else. *** Thank you for this Response: You are one of several who are stunned and don't know what to say. But you really listened, couldn't help be moved and that showed. . Thank you.

James, thank you for liking this song written by Jimi Hendrix. It is on a album called Electric Lady Land. Jimi live version is on utube. Most of us guitar players grew up with that song. Take care, Mick

So sad. Stevie died in a helicopter crash in 1990, while on tour with Eric Clapton. He was only 35 when he passed on. Imagine what more he could have given us !

I don't think that I breathe the whole time he is playing, he was amazing. He played 13 gauge strings and had them set high from the frets. Most people can never play that and if they did it would shrewd their fingers off. It is like playing bridge cables

Agreed about not being able to hear his words. Cover song from Jimi Hendrix. Both killed it. Both in heaven now. Imagine listening to the two of them jam'n together. Left us too soon as did Jimi.

HIGHLY doubt Jimi is in heaven. The life he lived does NOT get one into heaven. You don't get there just because you're a good musician. Stevie is in heaven because he DID find Jesus before he died.

That was a cover of the same song by Jimi Hendrix.
Strive left us too soon. He died in a helicopter crash near Chicago about 15 years ago.
You just watched the master of the guitar
Now watch a living master of the guitar 3rd movement of Beethovens moonlight sonata by Tina S
Stevie could also play parts of that song BEHIND HIS BACK! To see that watch him play that song at a charity event in Nashville, TN.

    >8000 views... It seems, your "change of pace" is a welcome detour.... To be honest, your attention to detail and your musical perspective (even as a non-musician) is far better than a majority of the "Music Reaction Channels". Waiting for more! :-)

I read a a biography about Stevie Ray Vaughn that was written by an author with Texas Monthly Magazine after his death. Some interesting facts...
he used guitar string that were the strongest you could get. They were almost the guage of piano wire.
Stevie Ray never learned to read music. His brother Jimmie Vaughn was asked in an interview if Stevie ever played a song the same way twice. Jimmie's response was that Stevie never played a song the same way once.
Eric Clapton was asked in an interview about Stevie's range on a guitar. Clapton said that was much as he knew about playing a guitar, he would eventually run out of new different notes and chords. He said that Stevie never ran out of somewhere to go on a guitar.. that he was like a channel. He never ran out of different notes to play.
One of the reasons you have difficulty hearing Stevie sing is that he insisted on cranking up his amps to high volume. He blew out amps on a regular basis.
He was extremely humble, always deferring to the greats like Albert King, B.B. king, Clapton and all the rest.
He did a show with Albert King in which the 2 of them played together, trading off playing lead. Albert said many times that "You know that eventually I WILL catch up with you and give you a spankin." Stevie's response was to smile and say "I be happy to have it."
At a gig in Austin, Texas one of his callouses came off his finger. He found it, went to the owners office, and Super Glued it back on. The owner told Stevie that he didn't have to finish the gig. Stevie replied "Yes I do".
He always credited his brother and other guitar players for his abilities.
On a trip from Texas to California and back he wore out several sets of strings, sitting in the back seat playing his guitar without an amp.
There's a lot more to say, but that's enough. Check out his version of Tin Pan Alley, and Pipeline.
