Wonderful to get the shout out from John here, on making the intro to Dingwall (@5:28)! To add some detail... we were out for dinner near JT's hotel in Yorkville and afterwards, we were talking about all kinds of topics when John asked about other Canadian builders. I replied that Godin was the largest instrument maker by volume, and FBass was the super elite custom builder, and then mentioned Dingwall as a very specialized builder doing the multiscale thing, which intrigued him considering John is very tall with long arms (we even went to custom 35" scale basses for those we built him). So I did a google image search to show what the frets look like and the picture was of a Super P, if I recall, and he looked at it for a moment to absorb, reached out to swipe the picture to see another and BAM, a very bright green, very pointy NG3 came on the screen and I saw it instantly. His eyes went wide and he took the phone from my hand and showed it to Bernie (his tech) and without saying anything more than "Bernie! Have yoi seen these!?", I knew they would be in touch with Sheldon soon after. I am super grateful for the opportunity to have been welcomed into the DD world, attend several shows and build two instruments for John, but in the bigger picture Dingwall is really a great fit for him, and so I'm happy as well that another Canadian builder - and super good guy - is going to be taking good care of JT's bass needs going forward!
@@mikeuher5054year late, but that was an overdub by Bernard. Not knocking JT at all, I believe he played everything on the early stuff. But there’s video proof of power station
As a young player in the early 80’s, I idolized John!! I spent many hours listening to and learning those first two albums. Such an amazing player. Love him.
I've been waiting for him to talk about transitioning to that multiscale fretboard, and whether there was some relearning involved. Surprised to hear him mention Peavey in this video, but he speaks of them with love, and I see he's still using their amps. Can't wait for the album!
I know that, during a lot of years, John changed basses...Aria, Zone, Dingwall and others but the sound is always the same... fantastic, clean, punchy and easy to discover in the total of the song...is the MAN that is perfect, that's the fact!
I don't know what the hell he's talking about and I know nothing about bass but I could listen to him speak with that accent all day long! He's so amazing to listen too. And to look at too.
Not a player but I have always had a sensory need for the bass to be into a song the one that carries the VIBE through it. Because of the way I perceive things I have always found my favourite tunes to be those when the bass punches through and the drums too, it's like a sort of a sensory balance at my solar plexus level. I am neuro divergent and sounds trigger a few other sensory responses for me, physical and emotionalones; bass+drum combo (especially the the way John Taylor does it in Duran Duran) is fundamental for me to even feel comfortable in my skin when I hear it, not every band has what Duran Duran have because not every band has this perfect combo of sounds.
It's always a pleasure to listen John explaining about the way he makes music. He's a talented humble true musician! Always something to learn about his concepts. I was very surprised when I recently noticed he was not playing his Peavey signature model so I thought "He has tried so many basses through his career that something REALLY good must have that new bass I've watched in several videos". I wish he had explained a bit more while playing it. He didn't mention the model! Anyway thank you! Dingwall was unknown to me in Mexico City and I'm avid to know about his new bass
I saw Duran Duran last night and the bass sound was immense and articulate. Super punchy. I told my wife, “Woah! John’s playing a Dingwall!” She says a ding what?
Each musician has to find their own place and move along on that amazing journey. Each one of us becomes an integral part of a well-oiled machine that, when running correctly, is just the most amazing experience one can have. When you have more energy than when you started. And everyone wanting more and more is complete validation of a job well done.
I've mixed Duran Duran live on and off since 2001. I had some time time away from them while mixing Harry Styles. I came back to them to find him playing this new Dingwall bass. I can honestly say it's astonishing. Funnily JT and Bernard Edwards who he mentions here are part of my musical history. Its not often a front of house engineer comes to the stage to find out 'what the hell is that bass- its amazing !!!???' And yes as a 'failed' bass player myself Im gonna get me one !!
John is a great player! It's cool he gave props to Peavey! The USA Cirrus is one of the best basses ever made, and I still regret selling my Bubinga/Walnut 5!!! Dingwall is growing on me!
I've heard John talk before about how he's very focused on a specific frequency range, and I've heard Sheldon speak on the same way about how to make the bass work in the context of a mix so yes - definite synergy between them both.
Saw DD in concert this weekend. The PA wasn't exactly aimed at my upper bowl seats. Obviously DD has a LOT going on in every song, it would be quite easy to bury the bass in a lot of the synth mush that occupies the upper mid range of their music. That said - I heard and felt every bass note, with lots of punch and articulation. No thinning of the sound on upper register runs or the slap/pop sections, even actually heard the delay on View To A Kill, which I can't pick up even on the original record. The Dingwall bass is a really great match for John Taylor, and it certainly was distinctive in such an extreme environment.
Playing bass for 51 years now & still play live frequently both in rock and gospel. I have two Dingwall basses & that’s all I play. Dingwall since 1996 there is nothing out there as good. The notion of just adding strings to a bridge is ridiculous especially for low notes. Fanning the frets was and is the only answer. Just wrap your head around a piano without the strings having different lengths as the lower register. It would be an unplayable instrument. Get a Dingwall ! They are incredible
Before watching this interview with John Taylor, I was listening to some classic Industrial Electro from the band, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult earlier this morning, and thought about how cool it would be if Duran Duran ever covered their song, "Blondes With Lobotomy Eyes." th-cam.com/video/adH_g7hlVQk/w-d-xo.html Since John loves to dance and is a bassist, I believe he and Roger Taylor as well as Nick Rhodes would have fun covering "Blondes With Lobotomy Eyes." There's plenty of bass in that song alone.

Thank u for the background story..super cool.
What an amazing moment! Thanks for sharing this with us!!
A criminally underrated player.
I disagree. He is well known and respected.
No he's not!
Yes, very much so.
JT IS underrated,Is to,Is to,Is to infinity!!..haha!😂
John is one of the best bass players around, he killed the bass on Rio, I still tell everybody, stop, listen to that bass line to this day!!!
Absolutely!! The amount of ghost notes alone, is amazing
I feel that the 1st 3 albums had a great baseline beat to them. Very distinct.
Or the little solo in Bang A Gong

Very humble man, JT appears to be!
He's very knowledgeable about how to fit the bass sound into songs.
What a legend! His basslines are one of the best in pop music
Top man, great player
That's years and years of experience talking.Very underrated bass player.
John the Best Bass !!!John amazing Duran !!!I love You so much!!!😘😘😘😘😘
Love the fanning of the frets. Definitely intuitive. It moves with the hand. Nice! This guy is the reason I wanted to learn bass.
All DD fans want more bass!
My right ear likes this.
🤣🤣🤣🤣

He also uses the new Trace Elliot _(which is also owned by Peavey now)_ 1200 amp heads and 4X10 cabs. I hope to get my hands on those someday...
Peavey hasn’t put out the Cirrus Bass in some years!
To think I bought a Pevey Amp for my Aria Pro Il Bass 30 years ago. It sounded the best for that bass.
He's so beautiful.
So when do we get the signature JT series bass? Long overdue
Aria already did that.
Didn't peavey do something called the JT Liberator?
I'm sure Dingwall has a JT signature model in the works. It's too obvious not to.
Looks like Dingwall will be releasing a JT signature... With "Rio" inspired paint and graphics too!

Duran Duran Rulez! With Love And Respect From Peterborough, Ontario, Canada! Keep Up The Great Work!
I don't know what the hell he's talking about and I know nothing about bass but I could listen to him speak with that accent all day long! He's so amazing to listen too. And to look at too.
So freaking sexy 🔥
Lots of knowledge there! Thanks, John!
Nice pairing…The Rio Dream Bass looks Great🎶🎶👍
Always loved John's playing.

Now I want a Dingwall and I don't even know how to play bass!
Not only john but curt smith from tears for fears uses them as well now you must get em .

Kurt smith from tears for fears is also using Dingwall basses on their current tour.
Love John, love his bass!

i think John managed to give an authentic endorsement while also not dissing his long time peavey basses. I'd love to try one of these out

Only 82 made, meaning absolutely no chance of getting one! Hasn’t stopped me trying though! 😊
JT is a character! One of the best bassists ever!
Bernard Edwards and Tony Thompson best rhythm section ever.
Aye! Lovely
Is he wearing a Commodores shirt? Imagine if started to play "Brick House". Now that would be one cool bass part to heat him play.
It's a play on the commodores logo. It's from a brand called punk masters.
The Aria is still my favorite bass
Great interview but the sound is borked (panned hard left)…Please fix, Dingwall people!
