Totally agree. I'm a rock guitar player and don't normally listen to that kind of music but RIO is a great album and John makes me want pick a bass and play! He is THE SHIT!
I think John Taylor is a very good and rather underrated bassplayer. Some of his basslines, especially from the first albums, are very original, extremely enthralling and not so simple to be executed.

i used to listen to 'seven' all the time on my little tape recorder as it was as much as was passed down to me in 83/4. At highest volume, would reflex bound out! The violence continued but i had Duran Duran, vapors, madness,adam ant, spandau and shaky. I can't tel youl how important ths was. DD were the most relevent to me. My life was amazing listening to the 'reflex' and 'union of the the snake' over and over again as a youngster. Thank you so much. John is so acute and kind. Le Bon and Hadley are the best!!!
John's bass playing is always exciting, punchy, fluid, umph-y, and reflective .... and augments the rhythm and the melody, while being it's own voice 'singing' or commenting on the song. He has a distinct sound to my ear. He's apparently famous for his use of "ghost notes" (muted notes that pulse and fill in spaces like an echo). Pretty creative eruption from someone who switched to bass from guitar because it felt more fun .... and he really creates something powerful with Roger. Yes, I love Duran duran.
Primary reason Im a bass player. Heard Rio and my granddad bought me a bass in 1983. Im still playing but funny, I dont know a single DD song all the way through. I started writing my own. But A LOT of it sounds like Mr. Taylor is the influence. And BTW.... WTF is up with the Parkinson's Syndrome camera work?
exactly! it's such a shame that most people dont know that john is also the founder and the mastermind in dd, and only see john as a pretty boy. i saw some comments on youtube about john taylor and they are clueless about john, they think john's role in the band is just standing there being eyecandy. they dont know how crucial john is in the band. they dont know that john is the architect of dd who formed the band, created the concepts of the band, and planned out. they think john is just a pretty face with no skill and talent. john barely given his due for his talent and musicianship because people only judge him by his looks. tbh i also had that first impression of john when i first saw duran's video. i find it hard to believe that john is a bass player cos he's so beautiful he could have been a model. however, even though i didnt know who he is, he still stood out among the rest of the band and stole the show.
