DIY 30 Shot Firework Mortar Racks

  • In this video, I show how I make my 30 shot fanned and 30 shot straight mortar racks. I like 30 shot racks because I can still carry them by myself (fully loaded & fused) without too much trouble. I would start to struggle carrying a 40 shot mortar rack, for any longer distance, by myself.

    Impressive and helpful! I'll use this to build my first rack.

    Awesome video. I love the parts list and the way you actually showed a sample of each item.

    Great tutorial my dude. Fixing to start mine now. I'll be using plywood sections in place of the 1x4s due to increased lumber costs. I plan to build 4x24 shot racks (96 total) to pair with a case of my preferred cans (Commander in Chief).

      My plan is to also include a terminal block on each so I can quickly wire them up to initiators/ talons. I plan to shoot less than a full rack at several instances throughout my show so the t block will give me flexibility to do so. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CLW5FPS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

      Another little detail that can be changed is to double the capacity by making the base frame twice the width. This requires very little additional work and only doubles the amount of 2x3s required, everything else just gets absorbed by having less scrap for the end plates. The long sides are identical. You can connect the two parallel sets of 2x3s with a few pocket screws along the length. It really isn't even necessary to do so because they'll be held together at the ends anyway, and they don't depend on each other for structural stability. Just some additional comments to spark ideas/convo from the peanut gallery.

      I used those terminal blocks last year for my first show. I had them attached to each of my four main shooting boards and it worked flawlessly. I was able to transport four 2'x8' sheets (left, middle, right, and finale) to my shoot site already rigged with talons between the product and the TBs, then all I had to do was connect my home-made, wired e-fire module to each of the TBs. It took 30 minutes tops, even I was surprised haha.

    Great video. I will definitely use this to start building my own racks. This is the last year of saving x cal tubes.
    Great video! 🤘

      Hi Josh thanks for watching! Good luck building your racks, mortars are sure faster to fuse than fusing multiple cakes! You can still save those Excal tubes. You can knock off the bottom sleeve and plug them and reuse them, but it is a good bit of work! Personally, I find it easier to buy the DR11's already made or you can buy "irregular" DR11's from Pyroboom and plug them yourself.

      @@brandonc7450Thanks man. Pyroboom was who I was looking at. I have been eyeballing there orange tubes, a little spendy but we only get one go around. That will be something I practice this year is fusing and laying out cake/repeater boards. Get ready for my first wholesale order next year.

    • @brandonc7450
      @brandonc7450  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jamie Woods, thanks for watching! Yes you could use just 1x3 & 1x4. I just like to use the 2x4 on the ends to tie everything together as it provides a larger "handle" to grab to lift the rack. These things get pretty heavy after being fully loaded.

    • @jamiewoods9222
      @jamiewoods9222 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@brandonc7450 I appreciate your prompted answer. They do get heaving. I didn't know if the racks needed the 2x4 or if it was just your preference . Great video ,the fact you took the time for details on it. Happy 4th

  • @ryanspence7239
    @ryanspence7239 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good video...i've learned you use lighter materials over the years, and would construct these to not be as heavy by getting rid of all the 2x's & construct with 1x's only

    • @brandonc7450
      @brandonc7450  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ryan Spence, thanks for watching and for the tip! I like using 2x4's on the ends to provide a good handle to grab onto. We lifted these into a cart that is pulled by a riding lawnmower to get it down to the launch site.

    May I plz ask,
    Why is the base 24” long? That’s a lot of wiggle room if the tubes are 2” OD. I was told to do it 20” with and extra 1/16 per tube so bottom plate for a 10 shot rack 20 5/8 then basically same set up as the rest of your video. It’s just a question Bc the difference between 20 5/8 and 24” is a lot. I haven’t built the racks yet that’s why the question my friend. By far you have a great shows as I am a new subscriber

    • @brandonc7450
      @brandonc7450  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tako2e, thanks for watching! These racks were made with the intention of fitting (10) DR11 HDPE tubes per row. A single DR11 HDPE tube has an outside diameter of 2.4". If you are using fiberglass tubes then this design will be too wide just as you mentioned. Here is the link to the tubes that I use for my show www.pyroboom.com/products.aspx?name=mortars. Hope this helps! Have fun and be safe my friend!

    How do you put the tubes in? just put them in and call it good? Do you need to secure the tubes?

    • @brandonc7450
      @brandonc7450  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mike Hunt, thanks for watching and for your question! The racks are designed to let the tubes easily slide in place, but snug enough to prevent them from moving or ejecting from the rack during fire. So no additional securing is necessary for the tubes. Good luck with your show!

    I have alot of 2x4 wood in the garage. I imagine I can't use the 2x4 for the base because it will be too wide for the hdpe tubes?

    How much life do the HDPE tubes have? Can you use them more than one year?

    • @brandonc7450
      @brandonc7450  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The tubes themselves will virtually last a lifetime (assuming no misfires and shells going off in the tube). But the wood plugs on the bottom will eventually need to be replaced. If the wood plugs are getting old and starting to show signs of cracks, then its time to replace them.

    • @brandonc7450
      @brandonc7450  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Neal LaCroix, thanks for watching! The eye hooks are there is case you want to stake the racks into the ground. I place mine on an angle so I stake the racks into the ground so I know that they can't tip over. You can see how my racks are set up in the intro to my 2020 4th of July show.

    Top side rail should be plywood. Bottom side rail should be osb. 1x lumber can be dangerous if a misfire sends it to a new home.
