  • Strelitzia Nicolai Bird of paradise problems, need your help! | Trying to save my Strelitzia from dark and brown spots.
    I have a very nice Stretlizia nicolai also called bird of paradise plant. It was growing big and was thriving with green lush leaves. Suddenly in November it started to get problems with dry, yellow, dark and brown spots. I have done some research about it, and in this video I am trying to save it from dying. I also hope if any of you have any tips and tell me what could be the problem.
    I will continue to update you on the progress of this lovely Bird of paradise plant, and if I am able to save it.
    Hope you like the video, remember to subscribe :)

    Hello! Your plant is now “dormant” and should only be watered when the soil is relatively “dry”. At a moisture meter the soil should be between 2 and 3, regardless of the type of soil. When spring comes and warmer weather with a lot more “sun” the plant will start releasing new leaves again. Move it closer to the windows now in the winter, if your windows have good glass ..that there is no draft if the windows have only "one" glass. If you do not have the opportunity to bring it closer to the window so that the plant gets more light, buy a grow light, or a simple LED bulb (6500 kelvins / 1500/1550 lumens) and place some 50/70 cm above the plant so that the light does not burn the plant. with stagnant tap water 24/48, "room temperature", or distilled water or rainwater if you can store it in a plastic container.Spray the plant with distilled water, not tap water due to chlorine and limescale deposits. Transplant the plant into new soil in the spring (60% ordinary soil for houseplants and 40% perlite or 40% pumice). Fertilize the plant from spring to autumn with half the dose of what is prescribed on the fertilizer bottle! If it says half a cap to 5 liters of water, put in half less. Add fertilizer every 2 weeks during the growth of new leaves with diluted fertilizer.

    My plant is doing the same and I also got mine from Ikea! Someone suggested overfertilization. Since I know I haven’t fertilized it myself, my assumption is that there is fertilizer in it from the greenhouse. My plan is to flush the soil with water to help remove the fertilizer.

      I am sorry to hear that Tia 😔 It is really sad to see that when they are like that. Mine is getting better now finally. I am very becareful with watering in the winter. I just cut all of those damage leaves because they will never gonna return to nice leaves anymore. I wish good luck with yours 😀😃

    I read somewhere that you should get rid of old worn and dry leaves stems and flowers so plant energy gets diverted to the new growth

      I have brown wilted leaves on mine. Do I just cut the leaf itself off or part of the stem?

    • @sharanyein3466
      @sharanyein3466  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jmichelle216 Hi, if the brown spot is on the edge of the leaf, it is just fine to cut the edges. But it is right middle of the leaf then I would rather cut it the whole stem 😃

    Hello ! After repotting my plant, some roots were rotten. Maybe you should check if it is the rotten roots that cause your problem.

    • @sharanyein3466
      @sharanyein3466  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you 😃 I will check. If you see some roots rot when you repot, you can wash the root with dishwasher soap. I did for my monsters root root, but not sure with Bop 😄

    Birds of paradise is my favorite plant. I took the plunge to try and care for it 2 mo ago. It was doing well but now not so much. I have 2 leaves that are all over brown, others curling and I'm so sad. I read the roots should be white or tan and anything dark or mushy is considered root rot. Only 2 of the roots are dark. Do I cut off those roots? Leave them and let the plant sit out of soil for 24hrs to help dry out and then replant? I'm trying to save her if possible but she is definitely not doing well.

      @sharanyein3466  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, sorry to hear that and I totally understand you. I had same experience 😔. Normally you should cut off the roten part from the root and wash the rest part with dish washing soap to kill the bacteria and any potential infection. And let it dry for a day and plant with new soil and new pot. Hope it is a helpful answer 😃😍

    Mine has the same brown spots, I’ve tried many things, but the spraying. Right now almost all leaves have the brown spots and thinking just to get rid of it. Any updates or advice on what you did to recover the plant? Maybe a follow-up video? Thank you!

    It looks like those are sun spots indicating the sun level may be too high. If its in direct sun move it to a spot where it is indirect but still bright.

      You could have a humidity problem as well because of the leaf curling. Try putting a pebble tray under the plant. That’s what I did and it is helping more than spraying the plants! Look up pebble tray!

    • @sharanyein3466

      Update!! I put my plant outside on our covered patio. It has given me so much new growth and I put her in a larger pot

  • @ewcik2711
    @ewcik2711 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I would take it out of the pot. It looks like fungi. Quite probably the soil is diffrent close to roots. The roots could rot. I would clean all the earth close to root. Cut all the rotten roots and spray it with antifungi. In my case that was wrong soil. The plant aarived soaked in water. The soil was diffrent on the top and bottom. I water my strelizia once a week. It is something wrong that the soil does not dry over weeks

      Mine is doing the same. When I first got it for the first week the soil felt dry so I watered it like 3 -4 times in like a 10 day period. Then all of a sudden I noticed the soil was damp and I did not water for 2 weeks. I've been having issues since then. I've repoted. Change the soil. My roots are brown so I ended up doing a hydrogen peroxide rinse, it's been a week since the rinse and it has not needed any water still. I just noticed today I have fungus gnats. I don't know what else to do. I'm trying to be patient and let the soil dry out on its own. My leaves are pretty good still. It's almost like nothing has happened and I've had it about a month now. Lmao I've had to rearrange my whole living room to have it as close to the patio doors as possible. Lol it's my first house plant so I'm trying to do what I can to save it. Help!

You can also try it, if you dont have access for neem oil , you can try only soap water. Spary directly on the Trips everyday, until they are complete gone. Good luck 😀
