This looks lovely! I like your doodling style, too. Some very good tips here. Oh, also, I'd like to reassure my fellow book lovers. I used to feel absolutely awful about ripping or cutting pages out of books. Or even letting them get damaged in any way at all. They're beautiful and sacred! But after working in bookstores for 13 years and seeing just how many perfectly good books get thrown into a recycling bin or just plain thrown away, literally put in the trash for no other reason than that there were too many copies or too many similar books, I've come to believe that buying those books just to rip them up is still good. It's giving them a second life, a home, a purpose, when they'd otherwise most likely be sent to a landfill.
When Ansel’s work was ripped up I had some sadness, but I also know what it feels like to find that perfect mountaintop in the middle of a great book.Ansel was given away so that she might make this awesome art journal vid...and inspire other soon-to-be artists. The circle of life, man 🙌✌️
This is an excellent point! I worked in a big-name bookstore years ago, and I was horrified by how many books were just pulped. Seeing that pained me way more than using books for artwork.
I used to feel the same about ripping or cutting pages or pictures from books. I've always looked at books as something sacred and untouchable. Until a few years ago when I moved out of my childhood home and found that a lot of old books and pictures left behind by my parents are ruined in the process. I cut some pages and pictures that I could save and moved them into my journals. I found that I've given them new purposes and a new life. Still feel the same with any new books cause I also realised that I rarely return to some of these books once I am done reading them :)
Yeah. A lot of TH-camrs are like, holding up a pencil and like, "Yo what's up, I got this AMAZING product for only $300! If you know anything about this, you know that's a steal!" Okay, that's extreme hyperbole.
i think this is a better alternative (in my personal opinion), because they would just throw it out after that. And bonus if it resonates with what you're looking for and maybe your own theme! I do feel bad about the papers but raw papers are easier to recycle and papers that are multi-layered (added with plastic like magazines) are hard. So if you can use it and give it a new home, go for it! i like to use brochures that people forced me to take and make something like a collage(?) Something like Poster Boy lmao.
I do something similar. At my uni library, they have old magazines that are free to take for students. A lot of them are Times magazines so they have some really gorgeous photos in them.
Omg thanks for this video. I've watched a lot of people bullet journal and I've always felt overwhelmed because they have all these cute supplies and everything, and I don't, so this video helped me, and inspired me.

Hey best tip for dealing with an exacto knife is not to put pressure (pressing down hard while cutting), because there is less control, since it's supposed to be sharp, you just create a crease cut by just lightly (resting on the surface) and then go over it multiple times with the same pressure until it comes apart. Depending how thick the material is will depend on how many times you will have to go over it. Hope this helps to keep your fingers safe :)!
You only have two videos??😱 I was getting ready to binge watch your art journaling videos until I clicked on your channel and saw that you don’t have more! It’s ok though, I can wait😌
Girl - I’ve never seen anyone else bite around their nails like I do. It’s from bad anxiety and I’ve done it as long as I can remember. It’s my biggest insecurity and it was so comforting to see someone else like me 🥺❤️
this is totally the style I look up to, it's so pretty yet simple 😭 ((for the nails I found it useful to actually have a goal like, I used to pick at my lips but this year I decided for snake bites so yea I wanted some pretty lips maybe, lol. just aim for nail polish even if transparent and you'll see how short they are, it's reallly hard to stop like I still unconsciously do it but you see results pretty fast, I saw with my brother just a couple weeks and they were normal nails again, just wanted to share my recent thing since I never actually stopped that much even tho I bled and didn't rly like it! ))
I stopped biting my nails by making it not only about me. So me and my friend decided that if I was gonna stop bite my nails they were gonna get 8 hrs of sleep every day. That really motivated me.
I don't want to make you sick but biting nails is such a risky thing to do! Do you know how much bacteria lives underneath those dead projections at the tips of your fingers? YUCK! Think about where those hands go and if that doesn't cure you I don't know what will. You're welcome. (Just kidding about that last bit.) :) Good luck and please quit.
Yeah im 25 and i only stopped biting my nails last year, its still hard to stop the urge, but i do agree with nail polish. It helps a lot cause it catches your eye more often than not as its going to your face, so your brains more likely to register what you dont want to do!
I have absolutely fallen in LOVE with art journaling over this quarantine helps me so much to be productive and give me something to look forward too! It also really helps with my mental health thank you so much for giving me so many great ideas and inspo I love your vids!
seriously love how you do your journaling!! it gives me lots of inspo + ideas. you should do a bullet journal/art journal flip through when you’re done! 😊
I have been very stressed lately and wanted to start journaling to calm myself down. This was the first video i watched about it and cant wait to start. ps unsplash is awesome thanks a lot
This is the first time I watch your videos and I immediately subscribed bc as a cheap woman like myself can actually relate on how we use our creativity to make things looks very creative and at the same time spend less than what it appears to be.
I’ve watched so many of these ‘art journal tips’ videos (bc i’m super un-creative but love art journals/collaging lol) and this one is probably the most helpful by far! I actually got so much info and inspiration from this so THANK YOU! just subbed 💓
My grandma always said she was uncreative too, but she was awesome at making clothes. She didn't consider following a pattern to be creative, but I disagree. It's a guideline to show you how to do something. So if you're ever feeling uncreative don't be afraid to watch a tutorial. And you might find that you are creative, just not in the way you expect. I always wondered why my art sucked, then I made this beautiful pumpkin sculpture around Halloween and I figured out that I'm better with crafting in the 3D space than drawing 2D characters. So don't be afraid to pick up crocheting, knitting, sewing, cooking, anything and everything because even if you think it sucks then it's a learning experience. Tutorials are your friend. :)
This video is four years old and I’m just finding it, thank goodness! I can’t stand perfectly neat journal pages. I love the beautiful chaos of yours ❤
I learned so much from this tutorial and I keep coming back to rewatch. Please please do make more of these videos. They’re really helpful and I hope to started my journal soon. Thanks so much for inspiring 😊💕
Finally a journaling guide video that is actually a guide! 😌 I loved all the tips (yeah including the thrift store books, though I'm a book lover, but also a recycling lover). Your ideas on how to find pictures on unsplash and Google are next level! Can't wait to start using all of these, so thanks. And keep up the good work 👌
I already bullet journal but I feel like putting my art in it kinda ruins it as I like a more minimalistic theme in there but I just rlly need a space like this. And wanna try
I've been journaling and now art journaling since I discovered 10 yrs ago.i too suffer from anxiety and agoraphobia. Art of any kind soothes my anxiety. Thank you for the idea of art books at thrift stores! You did come across my recommended videos and I'm so glad you did. To others who aren't interested, then go on by, we don't want any negativity.
Art journaling looks so fun! I've been looking into it and I do some bullet journaling here on the internet but since I love art it seems like a good idea. Maybe I will get my hands on an art journal later this year!
This is really helpful! I've been wanting to get into a messier style of art journaling after trying lots of other styles and I find it so interesting to hear the thought process people have when they're doing this. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for sharing your process. I LOVE to see your projects on Instagram and am glad to have found you on TH-cam. Something about your work is so pure and genuine.
UK peeps, Moleskin are on sale for about £12 at Homesense :) x Love your videos! This has inspired me so much to do it because i loved keep sketchbooks like this when i was younger
what a clever way to film left handed! Loved the video and even as a book lover I love how you repurposed books people might never have opened. That Ansel Adams book is amazing.
I have a few books that I annotated in high school English classes. I've been hoarding them for years because I couldn't bear to throw them out, but no one would want to buy an annotated book from Goodwill...they would be perfect for this :) thanks for the ideas!
I'm a leftie as well and I hold my pen EXACTLY like you do and my fingers are a little sad from biting too. Feels good to not be the only one with these kind of nails. Really hate that people always have perfect nails on youtube xD
I suffered from having a fear of journalling again but i'm still trying to get through it. I was wondering on how often you do journaling? and what inspires you to continue doing it
At timestamp 6:53 was exactly what I was thinking of using in my journal. I was also playing with the idea of maybe taking some throw away cardboard as frames too. ❤
I’m so glad I found someone who’s nails look just like mine! I can’t seem to stop picking at my nails either and it’s so painful. :( Love the journals by the way! I’m so inspired by your videos

Instead of using the back of an old book, you could get an old placemat with a cork like material on the bottom from a thrift store instead. It would be cheap, better for the knife, and easier to cut on.
I’m not new to journaling and art but I’ve hit tHE worst artists block and this helped so so so much!! tons of inspo and greatttttt tips thank youuuuuuu😭❤️

you’re so adorable!! super helpful. i’ve been wanting to get into journaling and collage art for some time now, but a lot of people aren’t comfy with giving advice! thank you so much :)
i jus use my school printer to print stuff like these since i am the one running our computer café and i doodle on the blank sheets of paper and stick them in my journal
Ugh! I literally love your original style! I love how you collage and use composition so effectively!!! I live in Georgia in the US and thought I saw you at a hobby lobby/Michaels a few weeks ago. So if you saw smol black girl in a sweater glande at you with big eyes that was me😂😂😂
oh, it breaks my heart to see you cutting those books. As a book lover I probably couldn't do this. Although I see the result and love it. Maybe a fashion magazine will do it! 🤣
I really liked this video! Very awesome you can by those beautiful books in thrift store and so cheap! But also I'm goint to use thus folding back and forth method, so simple yet so beautiful!
This looks lovely! I like your doodling style, too. Some very good tips here.

This comment needs a star ⭐️ totally agree especially if the journal is personal and it’s going to be a second memory/ story

s u n k i s s e d yes, but all book material is not created equal and not made to last. My thrift stores no longer accept books!
finally! a youtuber who finds $20 expensive 😌
Aria Azure right?!? most are like “yeah. i just got it for like $60” ugh! 😂hun i need like $10 or less
Lol it is a treasure
Juliana Azul Ikr!
Right! 20 bucks is a bit much if I'm going to pay that much money for something like that there better be stuff that comes with it.

Such a great idea! I’ve never thought of that 😱

I am so glad I found you. I love your art journaling style!!
So many practical ideas here! Just shared with my journaling friends.

This video just made me grab my pens and bujo💕
Tim holtz distress inks would be nice on the ripped edges
It hurts my heart that you are going to cut up the Ansel Adams book.
I enjoyed your video though, TFS 💚😁
Lisa Marie 💛 thank you and I’m so sorry I know it can be painful for book lovers 😅 I still have most of the book perfectly intact!
Brianna Collins - I always buy two of any photo books that I plan to cut up. That way I still have one and I don’t feel so bad about cutting it up.

oh, it breaks my heart to see you cutting those books. As a book lover I probably couldn't do this. Although I see the result and love it. Maybe a fashion magazine will do it! 🤣
