Love it brother, keep it up! Dad got all jacked, when he got to see his plane in the air, good stuff. Good things ahead, each time it's getting better, and better. Just a shout out to you, Justin, and Eric, appreciate everything you guys are doing for the project, and for my pops!
Really enjoying this series. It gives a great insight as to what it takes to get an experimental aircraft from final construction to a safe airworthy status. Keep up the good work.
I’m really enjoying this project. I grew up in Visalia and was active as a youngster in EAA 262 in the 80’s with my dad. Rod built some fantastic planes and was a topic of conversation around the dinner table. I too want to see a 2 hour flight with a clean belly. Rod’s RV4 just went up for sale ... what a beauty it was and looked as clean as the day it was first flown. I sure wished I was the new owner of that one ... I’d trust it anywhere the winds would take it.
This was a fantastic video Elliot. Thanks for putting in the time and effort to document these projects for us to share in. It was super cool to see your formation ops a little too.
I'm loving everything about your videos lately! The new long format is very engaging and enjoyable to watch, especially the look into your briefings, and the explanations from you on what you're doing as you go through the process. And I definitely enjoy the little montages you interject with and other random goofiness during the process. Keep posting this content, and I definitely look forward to more uploads from you!
I had to laugh when you said how you sorted the loose stick - trimming down and then flying against it... that's an old Blue Angels trick! (They actually use a spring rather than trim... but the effect is the same, a very positive, precise flying experience at the expense of your wrist.. :) Also, very nice putting the text log in the description. You keep getting better and better with this!
Still the BEST P-51 scaled replica out there, the Stewart 51. All Aluminium and steel, just a smaller North American P-51 of WW2 fame. Would love to build and fly one, currently built and flying Vans RV4. Thanks Elliot for your dedication and expertise in flight test. Did you drop a camera on this flight? At 9:10 you can clearly see a GoPro mounted on the radiator air inlet scoop on the bottom of the aircraft. At 14:36 after your pass down the runway the camera is gone?
Very nice data in the description, really interested to know how you would trouble shoot the control stick and oil leak from a test point of view to get a solution. Thinking one would find the source of the oil leak starting from the top to bottom and the same for the control stick. Or from bottom to top on both of the issues. Keep up the good work and sharing awesome videos.
Just found your channel a few days ago and definitely checking it out. I'm a huge warbird lover and I fly 3 radio controlled P-51's. Your plane is awesome.
Damn I can't belive you donthis over and over. I know you do a ton of checks and tests but u have to have huge set on u to keep doing it. U probably have a seperate small parachute for ur marbles. Wowu been thruw alot lol awesome content
I've looked closely at all the homebuilt P-51 replica kits and this, the Stewart, is the most accurate, best looking, beautiful one to be built. Wishing them good fortune in getting this kit back out for production. I just might build one. Hell, I'd like to buy the one in this video. So gorgeous!
Another great vid and happy for Rod that you got the air to air work for photos. A fabulous way to wake up and see this in my feed. Question: On takeoff, you had a GoPro mounted on the bottom of the rad scoop. Upon landing, I did not see it. Did it depart during flight 14? Thanks for your video work as much as the flight testing for Rod and the entire Stewart S-51 community. All will benefit from a real test program. We need a validated Section 5 for the AFM.
I am excited to support however I can. We were quickly getting into the meat of a new AFM when we got into this recent streak of MX problems, but I think that is the goal. The Stewart is a cool airplane and I would love to help however I can. Yes, we lost a camera during the descent.
Wow what a cool miniature of the mustang. Coolest looking and most balanced look of any undersized replica WW2 fighter aircraft Ive ever seen... How fast does it go?
@@utopiasnow I understand. I've got about 20 yrs o King Air experience. Just odd to see a prop on a piston airplane feather at shut down. Thanks for the reply.
Awesome content! What was the actual time to repair the airframe after the flight 13 emergency landing? It seemed to be a really fast turn around on the airframe repairs.
Elliot - Just a thought: If you guys intend on mounting external cameras on future flights, have you briefed the possibility of losing another camera and it hitting your chase? That would suck. Perhaps pre-brief a wide enough/deep enough aft cone to prevent a camera strike (haha!, that sounds funny!) during any cross-unders? Or perhaps find a more stable method of mounting them? Heard you had used tape. Maybe professional grade suction cups? Fly safe!
Interesting question. We certainly talk about things coming off airplanes including cameras as a risk. We have never used suction cups for external cameras. Of all our methods we have only lost cameras with single stickies on surfaces that weren’t properly prepared, and it’s less than 1% of attempts. We used duct tape to reinforce many years ago but stopped when we had video from another camera that showed the taped folding up acting like a sail on the camera. Good thoughts.
I wear a mask even at low altitude for three reasons. 1. Crash protection 2. Better comms 3. Smoke in the cockpit More info here: th-cam.com/video/a-lceaOL2E8/w-d-xo.html
Well put together and very informative videos but the audio levels between sections are all over the place. Listening on headphones, I need to alter the volume six or seven times during each video.
what scale is this plane? Is this a kit? Was the plane specifically designed around the BBC? Is it an aluminum BBC? What is the final displacement? Estimated shaft horsepower? What RPM does the engine turn at cruising speed? Calculated pounds or gallons of fuel and hour and range? Where can I find more information about this effort. Interesting.
Your inner gear doors remained open after gear extension. Is this the way the system is designed? Normal function would be for the inner doors to close after gear extension.
Gorgeous plane! Can't wait to see it at OSH next year! Do you guys plan on obtaining reliable ELP (Emergency Landing Pattern......similar to an F-16 SFO profile) in your testing? I keep telling our S-51 community that those numbers/parameters are immensely important to us.
Well said. We do plan to do more work there. I would argue that need goes beyond the Stewart community to the larger community of people operating high performing relatively light aircraft with high wing loading. The glide performance can vary so much with configuration it can create a real risk of flying the wrong emergency. I would argue it’s better to assume a high drag emergency and be wrong than the other way around but even that approach has led to several nasty accidents in the last couple years. It’s a tough training point.
S-51 is most scale replica for me, out of all I ever seen, including Thunder Mustang. Looks like real scale Mustang and with petrol engine, sound is very similar like a real one.
