    My father was a Catholic born in Fermanagh who left NI as a teenager in 1938. He was pissed and spit on by Protestants on his way to school as a young lad. He fought in the US Navy in WW2 and always loved America as well as Ireland. His best friend in NYC was a Protestant from Co. Tyrone. When you're 3000 miles from home you're happy to meet another 'far down'. He didn't hold the actions of a couple of punks against every Protestant. It's time that 'loyalist' realize that Catholics were discriminated against for centuries and hopefully when the majority of NI is Catholic (sooner than later) they will treat you better than your ancestors treated theirs.

They have Great Britain and Northern Ireland citizenship, Great Britain and Northern Ireland passports, they have heritage from Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and they're Irish, Irish born and they live in Ireland, because Ireland comprises 2 states - the republic of ireland, and northern ireland.

      ***** You're disagreeing with your own terminology. 'British citizenship' is just a shorthand way of referring to it. However, officially NI people have UK citizenship. It may be called Britain for short, but they don't live in Britain, they live in northern Ireland. Just as the French call them 'Anglais', even though, it's not technically correct. So they are Irish with UK citizenship (and also Irish citizenship), and this is true whether they regard themselves as Irish or British

    If I may say at as a foreigner, I don't understand why those loyalists consider themselves "British". Technically, the adjective "British" matches with the noun "Britain", which comprises England, Scotland and Wales. That makes the people living there British. So, the only British people in Northern Ireland are tourists from Britain. If anything, they could call themselves UK-ish, or Ulsterish. It doesn't matter if they feel British, they can feel Klingon or Ferengi, but it doesn't make it true.

    Having been to Belfast recently (August 2015) contrary to what people see on the news, which ever media outlet they please, my experience of that city was an eye opening experience in a positive sense. Bearing in mind I had never been to Northern Ireland, let alone Belfast, before. Not only did my experience go against what the media paint Northern Ireland and Belfast, but I will quite happily return to Northern Ireland in a heartbeat given the chance. I made a stubborn decision to myself to refuse to take a favourable view of either side of the divide there. A Nolan said, the majority of people are legitimately using their right to protest peacefully, but the media focuses on the actions of a minority to make the headlines which renders people's arguments irrelevant. When riots kicked off in England in August 2011, I held my head in my hands in despair, thinking "this is not what we need". It's high time that people in the media focus on how the situation, in Belfast particularly, has improved beyond people's wildest dreams as a result of the Good Friday Agreement. I take my hat off to the population in Northern Ireland, like I said before, when I get the chance to return I will grab it in a matter of seconds, the province is not given a fair chance on the world stage. I (in videos I took from my recent stay, feel free to have a look) am determined to show the best that Northern Ireland has to offer!

    • @celticlofts
      @celticlofts 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've been to Northern Ireland many times over my lifetime and I agree that on the surface it has changed a lot since the Good Friday Agreement, but if you moved there and worked there you'd see that not all is how it seems. We still have a very deep sectarian divide and sometimes that does flare up, especially when the marching season comes around.
      As tourists we generally see the best of a place, or at least we hope to. We don't have to seek employment or find a house, and in general we don't have to deal with the everyday politics of the area. We as tourists are happy as long as the hotel is nice, the food is good, and the weather is kind to us. The people we meet are generally friendly because they don't see us as a threat.
      I do agree that Northern Ireland is not always given a fair shot, but we also have to realize that part of that problem is of their own making. It's not the Media throwing the stones or firing off petrol bombs, it's the locals, and you can't condemn the media for reporting it. They can't have it both ways.

    Nice to hear Edwina Curry acknowledge N Ireland as an abnormal part of the UK. As to the other guy's point about N Irelander's flying their own flag. It's even worse than the union jack. They've actually purloined the Saint George's Cross, the national flag of England, and superimposed a red hand of Ulster surmounted upon a solidified white star of of David. Despite claiming to be Ulster-Scots-Irish, they fly neither the Saint Andrew's Cross of Scotland or the Saint Patrick's Cross of Ireland.

    The flying of the union flag is no more than symbolic , it's not about loyalty to the queen it's more about Ulster plantation Scottish Protestant's showing their percieved dominance over the nationalist Irish Catholic population. the funny part is the English couldn't care less about any part of Ireland north or south and the unionist people of the north really don't give a shit about the people of London or any other county in England or Wales. Brexit has really brought out the contempt that the British powers that be have for the unionist population , it has become an embarrassment and millstone around their necks as proved by those interviews. let's be honest 99% of English people have no understanding of Irish history , certainly Edwina Curry wouldn't know her arse from a hole in the ground , I seem to remember her stepping down over an issue with eggs FFS .

    Irish 🇮🇪 from the Republic of Ireland and English 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, Scottish 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿, and Welsh 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 from Britain get on just fine. They don't have any issues with each other. Dublin and London have no issues. People want to move on. You have a bunch of radicals in Northern Island who live in ancient history. Protestant vs Catholic? Have you been to Dublin or London? People don't exactly wear religion on their sleeve. Most young people could give a fuck about religion. A little insensitive to hold Orange marches commemorating a religious war, is that the Middle East? Jesus. The West is becoming secular everyday. People are leaving organized religion in droves. I'm an American my father was raised Protestant in the German Lutheran tradition and my mother was raised Roman Catholic in the Irish Roman Catholic tradition, I attended a Roman Catholic High School, and a Lutheran Protestant College, and I'm either going to a State/Public university or Roman Catholic university for graduate studies. In the USA we don't care about old Ethnic rivalries. I'll use 2 friends of mine as an example. My one friend is a USAF Jet fighter pilot. He is English. As English as English can be. Red and White flag flying. Wears an RAF unit patch on his USAF uniform after he asked permission. His mom is from Newcastle. He is from a Protestant background. My other friend is Irish Catholic in background. As Irish as Irish can be. Tricolor waving. Tradesmen. When I introduced the two they got along great. His mom invited us all over to have food too. Well my English buddy married a girl from a Polish Catholic background, my Irish buddy married a girl from a German-Filipino Catholic background. Neither are religious. Both are agnostic or atheist. Both will not raise their kids in religion. This ethnic rivalry shit and religious nonsense is dumb. No one hates each other inherently. Its dumb. I've been to Ireland and the UK and had a great time in both. Quit the fucking Protestant war marches and join a labor March instead aside your Catholic neighbors. I could care less about these old wars. Ireland is pretty awesome and Britain is pretty awesome. I'm pretty fucking proud to have Irish in me, I have a Tricolor, and I am obsessed with English rock and punk. The Clash, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, the Who, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath. When the Rolling Stones or Black Sabbath comes on I blast that shit loud. So yeah you see I have Irish ancestors and I worship at the alter of the Prince of Fucking Darkness himself from England. Ah heh heh heh dung dung duh dung duh....🤘

      It's not that we don't care about the people, most people like most people everywhere care about suffering wherever it happens, but most know they don't know the history and modern economic and practical issues enough and couldn't do anything to fix it even if they learned it all, and those of us who have educated ourselves still see that it's too complex and sensitive a subject for us to feel we have a right to loudly express any opinion on the underlying geopolitical disagreements most of the time. Most just wish all the people there the best, and judge any atrocities harshly whoever commits them, but don't think about it much because what are we supposed to do? Same as you probably respond to any other sad news story about conflict. You let yourself care from a safe psychological distance and get on with trying to be a good person in your own limited sphere of influence.

    I'm neither Irish nor British, but I think you are actually wrong. "British" refers to the people living in Britain (England, Scotland and Wales). Only the term "UK" comprises the north of Ireland, so if anything, you are UK-ish. I find it very unfair that, after the Irish people decided by democratic vote they want to belong to Ireland, they don't, because of loyalist terror threats. Also, the protestants there are settlers from Britain who stole the land, so why should they have a say?

    I'm English and grew up in the 80s and whenever I asked about the troubles nobody could really give me an answer as to why I was seeing what I was seeing being reported in the media. So as an adult out of my own interest I've read up a bit about the history of Northern Ireland, I would say I now have a bit more of an understanding of the situation than your average Englishman ( there's a little Welsh and Scottish thrown into my heritage too!). So it's a massive subject to try and understand, but that's what we have to try and do - understand each other. There's always two sides to these things and we have to try and move on and show love, respect and forgiveness.
