    CLASSIC MOVIE REVIEW: Warner Brothers' "Gone With The Wind," KINGS ROW (1942) was the novel that could never be filmed becomes the great melodrama of the 1940s. Like Grand Opera without the singing, its sweeping grandeur and first rate performances by Ann Sheridan, Robert Cummings, Ronald Reagan, Betty Field and a cast of veteran character actors haunts you long after the final credits.

    I read somewhere that Jane Wyman could not handle watching “Kings Row“ one more time. Reagan replayed it constantly. There goes the marriage!

    When I first watched "King's Row" I had the same reaction to Reagan's performance that John Ford famously had to John Wayne's performance in "A Quiet Man" which was "I didn't know the big guy could act!"

    I read an article about Stephen King and he said he read "Peyton Place" and "King's Row" in the same year. I read both, maybe in the same year too. When I started reading "King's Row" it was exactly 100 years to the day from the day the story begins. "KR" was to be the first of a trilogy psychoanalyzing a small town. The author died and his wife Katherine took the existing material and made it into the sequel "Parris Mitchell of King's Row".

    I agree 100% with your analysis. (pun intended). Whenever I find myself over romanticizing about this period of American history (my favorite) I force myself to watch this movie and snap me back into reality. I MUST get this book.

    Do you remember Reagan in Santa Fe Trail? He tells Errol Flynn that the Indians outnumber them 10 to one; Flynn says, “If it makes you nervous, don’t count them.” I’ve always thought that anxious nervousness carried on into his presidency, and I wished he would stop counting!

    Just saw this movie for the first time and what a movie! I simply loved it and it's now an instant favorite of mine! Just saw your review and now I want to see it again to listen to the music score. I love John Williams and to think that he may have been influenced by Korngold for his Star Wars score is great! Thanks for your review, you're great too!

    Steve, you and your sense of humor rock! You have impeccable taste in cinema and review of. Finally, thanks to you, I have found others that sense that John Williams did not pluck "Star Wars theme" from the atmosphere. Along with Korngold, he had to be heavily influenced by Paul Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes by Weber, Movement IV (March)...find it on TH-cam and you will agree heartily. Carry on!

      @STEVEHAYESTOQ  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, it's high, sweeping, melodrama at it's best. I describe it as Grand Opera without the singing, but with that pounding, glorious Korngold score. Sam Wood was the right director, he keeps it ever moving forward, regardless of what shocking thing has occured, you're swept along with the flood., before you can dwell on it too much and lose the story's momentum. I love thim film. Steve

    I read somewhere that Tyrone Power was to play the lead- which went to Robert Cummings. I think Cummings did a fine job and the balance of the ensemble work would have been set askew if Power had done it. A superb movie and Korngold's great score - the title piece went on to be used for the tv show, "Twentieth Century" - Claude Rains and Charles Coburn- both stupendous! thanks for the recommendation.

    It's refreshing -- in an age of cancel culture -- for you to look past personal feelings to recognize Reagan's performance. To his credit, I think Reagan had a reasonable perspective on his own talent, and respected the craft enough to represent his fellow actors as SAG president. I didn't like the way his political critics dismissed everything he did as an actor that wasn't Bonzo. I appreciate your entertaining presentations here and wonder, have you thought to collaborating with Matt Baume on anything? He seems more TV-focused, but it could be fun.

    • @STEVEHAYESTOQ
      @STEVEHAYESTOQ  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, I haven't . But I agree that Reagan had a nice run at Warners and like his work in "Dark Victory", "The Hasty Heart" and 'The Voice Of The Turtle" to name a few. He was also a handsome rascal as a young man. Thanks for watching! Best; Steve

      I'm far from a Reagan fan, however, as the town "bad boy", he's charming and sincere in this. It's a perfect role for him, and Ann Sheridan steals the picture. She will break your heart. It's a sweeping melodrama, but ride and roll with it, I think you'll be surprised. Steve

    and revolting characterizations in classic cinema who uses his kindly respectable demeanor to hide pure evil.
