That has got to be an amazing feeling. Going 70+ down the mainline with that much power. It's every railfan's dream. We had our chance here in St. Louis with Frisco 1522, but she has been retired for 15 years now. But I am glad to see the 765 is now making yearly trips to Chicago. Maybe one day I'll be the guy in the cab recording some great footage of a true Lima workhorse.
That whistle is so unique to me. I honestly have never heard one like it! Also this is such a good video for hearing the whistle. Thank You guys so much.
I really want to ride this locomotive because it is my favorite. The Joliet Rocket is my #1 thing that I really want to do over the summer and to be able to ride behind a vintage locomotive. Can't wait till June!
Wow, Maybe not HD quality video, but so fun too watch. I need about 9 more hours of video like this to get my fix. Kudo's to everyone who helps keep 765 running. Steam Locomotives are Artwork in action.
What boy hasnt dreamed of riding in that cab, hanging on that whistle, with goggles, bandanna, and engineers cap. I know I did! As a boy, I was VERY luck yo get to tug on the whistle of Reading 2102 - she wasnt moving, but damn what an experience.
Hey FWRHS! I’m a volunteer at the Steam Railroading Institute. Fabulous video! I plan on riding the Joliet Rocket this year to catch up on how you guys and the old girl is doing. Thanks for the cool video!
The way she was made to run and does best at warp drive engaged and running hot gives the steam more expansion to run more efficiently and use all the thermal power each stroke of the pistons
Reminds me of the last New River trip in 93,I tried to chase her west from St. Albans with Tom Stephens at the throttle, and he let her really roll toward Huntington, I had a straight shot down I 64, and he had a zig zag railroad, and he STILL beat me to Huntington!!
I was just a kid back then, but MAN I miss those days. We would always wait for her at Montgomery where she stopped for water. Three things I always looked forward to as a kid were my birthday, Christmas, and 765 on the New River Train. I was 10 in 1994 when 765 went down for her rebuild and they brought in Milwaukee 261 to pull the train, which was also the last year for steam. It just isn't the same with a couple of lame Amtrak diesels. Sure, they try to keep _some_ semblance of history by getting diesels with the old school Amtrak paint jobs, but...meh.
This thing spends more time outside this state then inside.Have not seen it run towards Decatur since July 2015.Other locomotives like the 261 and or the 1225 should be brought into Chicago for them to use.
and the thing is she still had some power in reserve just a little bit according to Zach the engineer running this trip, hes a man of few words, but on my cab ride at the open house he said she still had a little left you might be able to hear it on my video I took back then in 2016 on my channel but its very loud inside and bobbles back and forth, it could be the old rail we have at cassad depot where her home is in new haven, well cassad was an old military depot for loose goods most of it is empty now in the warehouses steve showed me monday when I was out at the shop on the gps program on the computer in the office of the shop when he was trying to find a way back to his home from there. I dont know how old cassad is but I belive it dates back at least to ww2, as they had a firetruck that was the water pump for the steam engines, that firetruck ended up at the maumee valley steamclub down the road from us for filling up their steamengines they sometimes run at their events.
You guys should get a hold of the Chicago science and industry and get that NYC steam locomotive out of there and restore it and have the 765 and the steam locomotive NYC 999 that broke a world speed record of 112 mph and take both locomotives on a double header from Chicago to California and on the way back from California make a excursion to new york and take the rail roal tracks that goes through Plymouth Indiana along high way 30 in indiana with the NP 765 and NYC 999 on the way to new york
I just saw that NS is auctioning off the red coaches that were used on the new steam excursions, why is that? Is it because the program officially ended and they no longer want them? Do they expect VMT to find their own third class coaches next year? Because NS stated that 611 is welcome back for more excursions in 2018. Do you have a source for coaches besides NS if you run on the mainline somewhere next year, too?
NS won't let steam go above 40 MPH after the great dismal swamp that ended 611's excursion career in the 90s. Can't blame them for being cautious, at least they let the steamers play unassisted.
Where was this footage shot? I used to commute on the MILW North Line, and it is double tracked between Western Avenue and Rondout, which includes Glenview.
They blow the whistle to excess! I understand there's many crossings. But most of the whistle blowing I hear in this video is not the long, long, short & long, for grade crossings. Railfans want to hear the engine, the cylinders, the chugging and more importantly, the power. They put an operator at the controls who lays on the whistle and we can't enjoy the sounds we PAID to hear. Why pay to ride in the cab when it's all whistle. Yes, the kids along the tracks love the whistle sound, but they're not paying the bills. True railfans want to hear the engine with an occasional grade crossing. This sounds just like Ross Rowland in #614. Many of us walked away from an excursion when whistle blowing made no sense at all. Reproducing sounds that were never sounded by an engineer, ever. These guys obviously didn't have a train under their xmas tree. And now it's catch-up time for them. I WON'T pay to ride this train with a whistle jerk at the controls. I pay to hear the engine, not the engineer trying to play a song.
Paul, thanks for your feedback, but the engineer was doing as instructed by the pilot engineer, who works for the host railroad. This is a suburban commuter railroad with crossing after crossing after crossing, not to mention numerous crowds along the route. We hope you enjoy the countless other videos featuring the sights and sounds of the 765 that you're looking for - this just isn't one of them. If you'd like to instruct our crew, who are full-time engineers in their own right, perhaps the railroad is hiring.
I understand what your saying. But listen to the video. There's many whistle blowings that aren't crossings. On several occasions, the engineer, or whomever is blowing the whistle, is trying to sound their own "personal" whistle sound they've fashioned. If you blow the whistle at every person along the tracks you'll ruin the sounds of steam they've come to hear. I've ridden in the cab on several excursions across this country. And paid good money just to hear the sound of the steam at work. And heard many, many crossing whistles.
Paul Wassel were you there? THOUSANDS of people were along, near, even on the track that day. Would you rather hear the whistle in a cab ride video, or hear about them nailing somebody and lawyers of the deceased taking the reins of the situation? Blow the whistle. An old head told me in engine class to blow the horn any time I thought I might need to, as it was the "only thing on a locomotive that doesn't cost money to use".
This Steam Locomotive was running in very populated suburbs, not out in the open country. At 70-miles-per-hour the engineer is approaching many more grade crossings at a quicker rate of time. Going through some towns years ago,he would blow the whistle almost continually,or lay on the whistle as they used to say, block after block. I remember and rode behind Pennsy Steam when I was 8 to 12 years old, around 68 years ago, something I will never forget.
I understand you voicing your opinions and frustrations as a paying customer, because you have every right to. As a railfan though, I honestly can't believe you found a complaint that most people would love to have. If that's your only problem with these excursions, where does one purchase cab ride tickets?
That engineer has got to feel like a little kid at Christmas every time he gets to reach up for that whistle
I know right?
That has got to be an amazing feeling. Going 70+ down the mainline with that much power. It's every railfan's dream. Virtual Railfan Productions, it goes to Cuyahoga Valley for steam in the valley in Ohio.
My grandpa ran the 1522 on its last run I have pictures
To quote Rich Melvin on going over 60mph, ‘’It’s the most fun you can have with you clothes on’’

It's a Nathan 6-chime ~ best sounding whistle I've ever heard.
Sounds like any other American loco to anyone outside the US
She was truly storming!

I can't wait to ride the Joliet Rocket in a couple months.
Can't wait to have you on board!
Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society I want to ride in the cab of the 765 with y'all and blow the whistle at every crossing we pass!!!!
Got to drive her in OH back in Sept 18, 2017. Better then Christmas morning for any kid and i was 57 at the time. Dream come true.
Now THATS highballing!!!!
Daniel K steam and hoes!
Your wife said the same on my last visit…
765 is a beautiful locomotive.
I think the guy in the cab was living his childhood dreams laying on the whistle! 😉
Thanks for sharing with the public, this great video of NKP 765 at high speed.
Legend has it She is smoothest at high speeds.
That’s what they were made for, after all
Nice! This reminds me of 765 on the New River trains from ‘85-‘93.
I can still feel the soot hitting me in the face. Can't wait till the Joliet Rocket.
What an experience!! To ride on that seat accross tender is absolutely incredible!!! GREAT VIDEO!!!
Nice to see her getting to stretch her legs, that must have been a thrill for the crew. Thanks for the video and for keeping history alive.
Nice Footage KL. Brings back good Memories from many years ago.... JR..
On return trip, 765 steady speed at 70 miles per hour. This is the 1st time since 1953.
Thank you for the video

I've watched this so many times.. absolutely awesome...the whistle is it.To go for that ride would incredible 👍🇺🇸
This made my day! Thank you for sharing. I am so glad I was lucky enough to ride the 765 when the 765 did the Joliet Rocket trips. What a cool video!
I could listen to Her Sing all Day ❤️
The whistle is awesome 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍I like it

A fine example of the Lima superpower design: HORSEPOWER AT SPEED.

@@manga12 "warp drive" LOL, there is no such thing on steam locomotives.
Well it is running wide open full ahead at a full clip I would say that qualifies
Real treat, steam loco ride, felt as if me boarded the loco. ❤
I was by the end of the train and friends as well from this trip to make the epic video
My only complaint about this video is I wish it was 3 hours long. LOL
Just imagine, afew generations back, THIS was just business as usual on the railroad! And those crews wore no ear protection!
I love it! Great shots from the cab!

Why could 765 go this fast on Metra but only up to 40 mph on NS? Different rules? I enjoyed my two times behind 765 in PA.
NS timetable speed for steam is 40MPH.
