  • Join us in real-time as engineer Jason Johnson takes Nickel Plate Road steam locomotive no. 765 from Fitzwater to Akron, Ohio on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad in September 2019. On this run, the locomotive was carrying the whistle from Nashville Steam's steam locomotive no. 576.

    at 29:13 i love how fast he responds to the wheelslip, When running at speed uphill with a pull like that is something you take with great precision, His response shows how focus and on guard Locomotive Engineers are. Props to Him.

    Wonderful perspective. Really gives you an idea of the engineer’s duties and how he must manipulate the controls to achieve balance between throttle and reverse gear for the most efficient operation.

    The engineer knows what he’s doin’! I would love to run a steam engine for a side job, but I’m not near enough to anywhere that has a live engine. Don’t take this for granted boys! You’re doing what a lot of people wish they could be doing.

    This brings back memories of cab rides in x CPR/BC Rail 2860 Royal Hudson and 3716, 3716 continues to run in Summerland BC Canada. 2860 is at the museum in Squamish BC.

    I have to hand it to you Guys in the States, you certainly knew how to build engines. I wish I have had the opportunity to come visit when I was over there in 2019 for the Golden Spike 150. Our Queensland Government owned Queensland Rail Heritage hasn't run any steam since the very beginning of 2020. Which saddens me as I was One of the few Qualified Drivers allowed to work Our Steam Locomotives, one of which was a 2-8-2 Baldwin. Anyway keep the dream alive and best Wishes for 2022 from Australia 🇦🇺

    My dream job, to engineer or even fire a live steam locomotive!! Had an opportunity to be offered a job as a conductor for a large railroad, but unfortunately the family came first.

      @@vettebecker1 I'm a volunteer coordinator at a growing operation in Folsom, CA and I gotta tell you, I never imagined that I would have the opportunities that I currently have. These museums will train you and you can work your way up as part of operations crews if you express interest and take the time to learn.

    Mr. Johnson did a very fine job of running Engine 765, but his clothing is much too clean--especially his gloves. After all, this is a coal-burning steam locomotive!

      Yes, but operating it interferes with our on board event recorder, so this whistle is mounted on the main whistle valve port.

    What is the valve in front of him he keeps opening and closing with his left hand? At first I thought it might be the bell, but I don't think it is now.

      The handle hanging down is the throttle the one beside is the reverser it also controls where in the stroke the steam admission is cut of saving use of steam and easing horsepower robbing backpressure as the steam is exhausted out the used side with each stroke

      i think you are referring to the sander valve. is the valve in question a short brass vertical lever? if so, that is the sander. a hint is at 29:15, as soon as he notices that the locomotives wheels are slipping, he jams that valve forward (probably corresponding to the front sanders) before then closing the throttle.
      Edit: just in case you are referring to the valve he was twisting open and closed, I will say that I am not sure. I looked, but could not find materiel that explained what that was. Considering what I saw in the images I found, it could have been something to do with the gauges he had in front of him, or it could very well be the bell's air valve. in fact, it may actually be the bell, as he would be turning on the bell at every crossing they went through, and turning it off after passing through the crossing.
      Also a note: 765's bell is not exactly audible at all throughout the video, with all of the noise in the cab.

      We offer a Throttle Time session just about each time we're at the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad which is a good way to get familiar, but in most places you need to be a student engineer and serve over 100 hours before you can become certified.

    that sucks that they cant quill the whistle i imagine thats due to a electronic switch to activate it as to a manual pull cord? you can even see in the video the engineer being disapointed trying so hard to get the classic sound but nothing!

      Wheel slip, there were wet leaves on the rail and the drive wheel lost traction. You have to close the throttle as quickly as possible to avoid damage to the running gear. Then you open it back up to return to power. Same thing happens on diesel locomotives.

      The “independent” brake on the engine will creep “on” over time, so he has to make sure it’s released. You can hear the other engineer (off camera) tell him that he should “bail off” every 15 seconds or so.
