      The opposite is happening! More & more steamers are being brought back to life. Look at C&O 1309 for instance. There’s many examples in the US and England too. There’s even brand new steam locos being built from scratch. Do some online searching and you’ll see.

      I’d like to think there would be upgraded technology surrounding these things. Going from coal fired to oil fired happened for UP 4014 this year. Having a Natural Gas/Propane fired steam engine would also be pretty good.

      It’s a business sadly. Trains that run on diesel fuel or electricity are extremely cheaper to maintain. Wish we could see more old locomotives, but it is what it is.

    My parents used to take me to play on the engine 765 when it sat in Broad Ripple park. It was sad to see it gone, one day, and thought she had been sold for scrap, and didn't think of her much until one day, I was heading south on Keystone Ave, and the poles came down, and here she comes, chugging, whistling, spitting, venting, as any old steam girl would, and tears came to my eyes when I realized it was 765! My parents are gone awhile now, but every time I see a video of her, I'm a little guy of 6, instead of an older guy of 62.I hope she's kept running for decades to come!!

    Road tractors are as toys to these beasts of iron and steel... There shiny, fiberglass and plastic components and the diesel locos of today are mere efficient and souless machines.
    Those locomotives of yesteryear were alive and yearning to be let loose on the open road of steel.

    I might not have been born when steam engines ruled the rails (I'm 37) but they are just magical in their own way. A steam engine is a living, breathing piece of machinery. And like any machine it needs TLC for it to go on forever if need be. I bought an HO scale model of 765 from Bachmann.

    I was on the same trip as was "Annatar Lord of Gifts", and my interpretation could not be more different. It was one of the most amazing and enjoyable experiences of my life. Yes we stalled at the Nay Aug tunnel, but only because a vandal had greased the rails - apparently this makes for good video as the wheels slip and the stack belches black smoke, trespassing and vandalism notwithstanding. Rather than pack it in, the crew managed to back down the rails, spraying steam on the rails then sanding them, and make it up the grade the second attempt. That was an impressive bit of railroading. True the power in our car ( and maybe others) went out for a while, but again the crew managed to make the necessary repair on the fly and reestablish power. Their motto is "whatever it takes", and they were certainly true to that motto on this trip. Truly an amazing machine and an amazing group of people who love and maintain her - this was not my first trip behind 765 and hopefully it will not be my last.

I'm writing a book that involves steam trains and how in most chapters it mentions the procedure of firing a steam engine and what must be done at the start and end of a day of operation. 765 isn't in it, but one of the engines in it she has met once.

    Glad to see the mars light was put back on! Looks great! You guys do a wonderful job. I commented about the "white walls" awhile back and was told the NKP painted their wheels white or silver. My Grandfather lived and my father grew up next to a NKP main line on the Fort Wayne division near blare yard and watched Burks roar by and switch for decades. Neither has any memory what so ever of them having white or silver wheel trim. They have pictures, and I have searched for historical images (including the Herron videos) with no sign of white walls. Guess that's why it seems odd to me. Great video! Thank You for saving her.

    • @TheHighRoad1748
      @TheHighRoad1748 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on how big the locomotive is. If it's a small loco, like a 4-4-0 or a 0-6-0, it'd probably take around 2 hours, or maybe three. But the engine is a big one, like 4014, it'd be double that amount, more or less.

      +Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society Do you know if 765 will come back to Michigan within the next few years? I've wanted to see this locomotive ever since I was a kid and wasn't able to during the Detroit Arrow excursions. Its been a lifelong goal to be able to see the locomotive in operation and I am hopeful that it will one day happen.

      I hope it happens for you to Ben, if you love steam locomotives half as much as I do, I know how you feel, I have been out to 765s home in Newhaven, and helped clean her up to go out on a trip, I just love cleaning, and scraping grease off of her is an honor to do.

    The narrator reminds me of Morgan Freeman

    If I would own a railroad it would be a coal fired steam only railroad I would not even buy a diesel swicher just steam but wouldn't have any Museum events because it would be a real working railroad taking people and frate from point a to point b just riding the train to you destination would be a museum event but I would purchase by own coal mine to cut fuel costs

    Narration sound quality sucks. Very muffled and hard to understand.

      We agree! We're actually having it redone and the program remastered this year.

      Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society Can you lose the terrible music while you're at it, and provide something appropriate, where necessary, and not below the narration.
