    Lost me at spending $200 for the rack to be blue.

      +cheezwhizvids Yep.

    • @ScarmackProductions
      @ScarmackProductions 9 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      +cheezwhizvids What's $200 when you're already spending 2k...If 200 is crazy to you, then you shouldn't be looking at a 2k rack, just saying.

    • @cheezwhizvids
      @cheezwhizvids 9 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      +Sean Scarmack IMO $200 is better spent on many other things in a home gym than a blue paint job, regardless of how rich you feel you are (and I didn't get a "money-is-no-object" vibe from this video). Black is the "free" color, by the way. Nothing wrong with black. Spend the $200 on jump boxes, more plates, dumbbells, sound, etc.

    • @ScarmackProductions
      @ScarmackProductions 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      cheezwhizvids I mean, I'd rather have black personally haha. But in the grand scheme of things, he spent over 5k....$200 is nothing...But I honestly couldn't couldn't agree more though, I'd rather have black and put in some speakers ;)

    • @cheezwhizvids
      @cheezwhizvids 9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      +Sean Scarmack Even if I won $5K to spend on a home gym, I wouldn't dedicate $200 of it to rack paint. I might finish the room's walls if I wanted it to look nicer. Drywall is $10/sheet, just sayin'... Anyway more power to Brandon for doing it his way with his hard-earned money. To me, $200 is five months' gym membership. Easy choice.

    Not a bad investment. The home gym would pay itself off in roughly 4.5 years considering the cost of my current gym's monthly dues. Of course, this isn't taking into account the convenience factor of having a gym in the basement.

    • @BasementBrandon
      @BasementBrandon  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +James Chang Yeah will take awhile to break even for monthly fees, but it makes up for that in convenience IMO

    Hobbies are super expensive.
    Suggestions: deadlift blocks, safety squat bar, chalk bowl, mirrors, lat pulldown/row/cable machine for accessories, powerblock dumbells and of course a punching bag to vent when your lift won't go up.
    You might want to consider adding hooks to the platform somehow for deadlifts with bands - if that makes sense.

    • @BasementBrandon
      @BasementBrandon  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Solid Air the platform has pegs to do banded deadlifts if need be!

  • @roncitito7257
    @roncitito7257 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I got several hundred pounds of steel plates by buying olympic weight sets on sale from Dick's. The bars from those sets are shit so I bought a quality bar from rogue. Then, I made a deadlift platform and had a simple and sturdy rack custom fabricated for pretty cheap. 800 lbs of steel, a rack, a bench, a good bar, and a couple of odds and ends ran me a little over $1100 or so. It's not overly pretty but it does the job.

    All I have in my homegym is a power rack, a barbell, a bunch of plates (I collected over time). The power rack has a dip bar and a pull up bar. I also have an adjustable angle bench. I have all of this for under 1 grand. I bought the power rack from a friend who was moving and never used the rogue power rack he bought. I got my plates from various sources. The first ones were from him. Then I bought some bumper plates from a gym that was closing because I like to Oly lift (trained under an oly lifting coach for 2 years, so I know the correct form and such). The bench was the only thing I bought new.

      +Rachelle Watson you're absolutely right. I spent something close to what he did and factoring in monthly membership fee, gas to and from gym, and driving time saved..it'll have paid for itself in 2 years. Plus you cant put a price on waking up, walking downstairs and jumping right into a workout and doing whatever you want when you want, without waiting.

      Got to factor in the fact he doesn't have to drive to the gym. Probably only costs 10-20 minutes of your time and a couple bucks in gas but 4x a week, 52 weeks a year that adds up. Also after 200 months he still has all the equipment in perfect working order. It will still be worth a couple thousand bucks even in twenty years time because this stuff all lasts. So big initial investment but pays for itself over and over in the long run

    definitely not a budget gym. 300 dollar york olympic bar and 160 dollars for 300 pounds of rogue bumper plates is the simplest and cheapest way to start out. I've dropped bumper plates on concrete for over 2 years. Works fine and the needle bearings still work just fine on the bar.

      Yes, I am bitter. I could cut the tops of those off in 10 minutes with a $80 tool that's no harder to use than a can opener. Painting is way more reasonable since it'll take way more work, but we're still talking a couple hours tops excluding drying.

    I build my own for around 300$: pipings for squat + bench+dips rack,welding rods and andgle grinder discs: 20$. Weights - bought broken multi-gym machine and got major under price 150kg weights in 5kg each for about 150$ and the rest I spent on dumbell bars (not a great combination with 5kg weights) smaller weight plates (0.5 kg to 3kg pairs) and actual bench with situp grips. Oh and I forgot about 70$ on barbell.

    Did you end up putting a resin over the center piece of pine wood? I want to put a decal on my platform but I don't know if I should use epoxy or polyurethane to cover vinyl decal.

    • @BasementBrandon
      @BasementBrandon  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I put a few coats of polyrethane spray on all the wood, but then applied the decal on top of it. The one I bought I paid a bit extra for "high traffic" stickers. I guess they're supposed to be able to take more of a beating.

    Any plans on getting an adjustable dumbbell set for the home gym?
    I've owned the Ironmaster Quick-lock dumbbells for about 5 years now and they're just as solid as they day I bought them. They can be adjusted from 5-120lbs in 2.5lb increments, which I find handy.

    built my own home gym as well. Cost me a little over a grand. Most costly part was the rogue monsterLite rack. The power bar and bench are new but bought them from play it again sports(gym equipment store) at a reduced cost. Traded equipment off craigslist mostly. most people on craigslist want to get rid of all their unused equipment at once. from there I would keep what i like and thats where I would take in the stuff I didnt want to play it again sports for trade. Hope this helps anyone considering a home gym as well but have a smaller budget.

    a year gym membership can cost upwards of 350$. That's the cheapest membership in my area. i've been to 3 or 4 gyms in my area and some memberships cost over 1000$ for a year membership. If your planning on lifting weights for a long time I think a home gym is a great investment. You might end up spending a few grand but its worth it if you and your buddy's can make good use out of it for many years.
