I use Melodyne and Vocalign Ultra. My experience with Vocalign Ultra: The timing part of it has gotten much better than the earlier versions where you had lots of artefacts. So this has improved vastly. The automatic pitch correction of doubles and harmonies (when the lead has been pitch and timing corrected with Melodyne) however very often leaves terrible artefacts even with the newest version of VU. I often had to repair things with Melodyne. I give it a try with every new track that I work on but still artefacts with VU especially if the singer's voice has lots of non-tonal elements (like in husky/hoarse voices). So I usually end up time and pitch editing the lead in Melodyne, pitch editing the doubles and harmonies in Melodyne and then time align them with Vocalign Ultra. This has worked best for me so far. Maybe the next updates of Vocalign will change it for the better.
I agree with this observation. I just used this same workflow described initially and also noticed the artifacts. However, the time alignment really speeds up the process.
Vocalign 5 has saved me hours on hours editing when it comes to time alignment, worth the money for sure. I’m going to have to upgrade to Ultra for the pitch alignment. Great vid!
Would have loved to hear a couple of the "aligned" takes in solo. Obviously what ultimately matters is what you can hear in the mix, but getting to hear what kind of artifacts came from that aligning process could've given me a better idea of how often they'll be useable without further edits.
Im tuning better after watching this. I've taken this advice from you before but slacked off a bit. Your A and B vocals in this really sealed the deal for me to be more intentional with tuning. MPM 4 lyfe.
you should do a tutorial for editing, tuning and mixing bad singers, I guess for us producers is a very common situation that we find ourselves often, so it could be very useful
Been Time aligning all my Recording just by nudging or Melodine. Last song I just finished had 17 Harmonies w/ Main Vix up the Center so using Vocalign made is so much tight and saved me hours. You sound really GOOD!
Hey Austin I would like to know if you have a tutorial on how to make your vocals sit in the mix better because I recently just started recording my vocals in the same sessions where I make the beats and I would like some guidance with that. I normally used to make the beat then export it and record it in a new project but I decided to change so I'm hoping there's a video where you show how to balance all the elements in the song
Wow, they guy took almost 20 minutes to tell you to tune and time align the vocals ... revolutionary ... of course it`s all about pushing a product ...
When youre talking about how you use to fine tune every vocal track. It took "absolutely forever"....then you played back the line in this song "Feels like im wasting time" lol
We post videos every single week. If you have an issue with us doing a sponsored video once every few months, and still giving a TON of information and tips in that sponsored video, I don’t know what to tell you.
ctrl+shift+mouse wheel is the worst combination for panning and zooming! why can't I change this in the settings? for example to a normal scroll and holding the wheel without these ridiculous two extra buttons?
Hi, pop vocals here need advice: vocalign ultra and repitch or revoice 5? I’ve tried revoice before and it was amazing for timing all my backing vocals in once. (Pro tool) Recently, I asked around and ppl told me vocalign ultra is better and easier? (nowaday I am in between ableton for composing and protool for vocals) anyone working with pop vocals who has tried both, can give me feed backs? (I have M1 mac)
In principle it's great however everytime I have tried to use I have spent more time on calls to support trying to resolve crashes and other issues. Had loads of Apple issues and apple support say it's the SA stuff causing the problem ( even when it's not live in my Logic PU manager). SA team very helpful but we haven't got to the bottom of what the issue(s) are sadly.
I think that pencil tool is amazing. But other than that, I really don't see the need for it. As for the alignment tool, Cubase's built-in one is pretty damn good, too.
I downloaded the trial and am currently comparing it to Melodyne. Repitch's interface and tools are sweet, better than Melodyne. However, Repitch changes the tone of the vocal, removing highs / clarity. I tried adding some brightness via EQ to compensate, but it doesn't sound as good as the raw vocal tone or vs Melodyne. Has anyone else noticed that?
Do you put repitch first in the vocal chain and still mix as usual afterwards in terms of eq, compression and dessers? Or would the vocal chain have to be modified?
This is exactly the question I was hoping would be answered. I find the built-in audio alignment and VariAudio to be pretty efficient. I'll admit that the pencil tool is a definite necessity when it comes to note transitions and cleaning vibrato, though...
So, this is why vocals don't sound like a real Human voice anymore. In music, sometimes the non-perfectness of a voice is what makes it a voice. All the overtones are the thing, though. If you keep removing the overtones you are making the music basically be half computer. It is possible this current vocal adjustment technique is what will kill the current genres at some point.
It just depends on what your goal is. If you want vocals that feel separate from each other and all have different tone and inflection, skip the alignment and precise tuning. If you want a big section of 10 vocal tracks that just sound like one big consistent vocal in the mix, tuning and time alignment really helps the lead stay as the focus while the other vocals just supplement it. Different vibes for different records.
With modern music being very programmed and synth based, most instrumental sections are PERFECTLY in tune, so if vocals even stray a little bit it sounds awful. With live guitars and bass and strings, there is a ton of pitch variation so the vocalist has a little more flexibility.
@@MakePopMusicI hear you. However, I am a vocalist for 50 years, and the overtones in a person's voice are what make it their voice. It isn't my intention to slam you personally, but rather to state that this is why music doesn't sound truly authentic these days. It's not your fault.
Repitch looks so ugly. These colors are not so friendly to my eyes especially vocal sessions take too long. These guys picked the worst look for their plugin. And i tried vocalign. And revoice pro. I even paid for it but they were making the vocals too artificial and you could hear it was messing up the quality. After trying and trying i trashed both and decided invest in melodyne. I have been happier ever since guys. Short cuts can be assigned on melodyne and it cuts the time when i work on vocals🙏my time and money i spent on melodyne paying off. I wouldnt invest my time in repitch or revoice or vocalign. Melodyne allows you to see all vocal stacks in one place and edit all and results are soooo natural.
Vocalalign makes life so much easier. It basically makes it so you just need to do everything once
🙏

Big difference. That flattening seems to be crucial.

Great video!!
the song of the example is fire!!!
🔥 thanks Austin, you rock!

Can you do a tutorial in making a tune like Noah Kahan, Phoebe Bridgers, Johnnyswim, etc? Mainly in vocal production.
Wow great sounding song !!!! Is any chance for instruments presets please !?
You should release a course on that topic separately :-) Thanks for the video!
New viewer. Is this song available on Apple Music? 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Great vid, cool to see the proces
The more I learned about vocal mixing the more I learned about importance of good mic and audio interface (vocal chain)

How long until this goes up on your Spotify? Love it.
Probably never 😂😬
name of the song?? it sounds awesome!
you are Really Crazzy Professional Producer🔥🔥❤❤
lmao I was just searching for this in my session, thanks Austin :D

Just as usual, great❤️
The last videos that I saw from this guy is all about selling you something from a sponsor - all is a 13 min ad. He used to give away very good tips

Cmon man, the guy's gotta keep the lights on
BRUHHHH I've been looking for something like how you teach this
Great tutorial, synchro arts are a must have for modern productions.
What reverb did you use on the vocals here ?
VintageVerb from Valhalla!
Hey Austin, can you make a video on how to produce a song like the new Jonas Brothers album? Jon Bellion really killed it!
Love your videos!
I need that final result released
ctrl+shift+mouse wheel is the worst combination for panning and zooming! why can't I change this in the settings? for example to a normal scroll and holding the wheel without these ridiculous two extra buttons?
believe me editing vocals is the most tedious part of mixing. these tools could save us hours
Right! Exhausting at times
Years
I kinda like it hahaha
I love repitch! Its reaplaced melodyne for me!
It is by far the best sounding and most flexible hand tuning I've tried yet!

I need this info. Thanks
The Repitch part seems very similar to VariAudio which is right in Cubase. Any advantages that you found in Repitch?

i just saw a ad but love it
VariAudio is not good enough, is it? I am using it primarily. Never tried something else. Should i?
how you make the repitch extansion
Can you make a song like stargate and bloodpop?
Do you put repitch first in the vocal chain and still mix as usual afterwards in terms of eq, compression and dessers? Or would the vocal chain have to be modified?
It's an ARA attachment so it handles that outside of inserts.
Cool tools
Austin ❤ goat 🐐👌🔥
can you do another video but using melodyne?
no because I don't use melodyne but if I did it's the same exact workflow just without time and pitch alignment
@@MakePopMusic oh okay
Ok. I gotta say I want a link to get that shirt. 😍
Tombolo!
All of my cool terrycloth sets are from Tombolo! I have matching shorts on too. Hahaha
Realizing I need to split notes more. Thanks for the tips! 🚀
Q. How much of a difference do you get in quality by using Vocalign instead of the built in alignment in cubase?
This is exactly the question I was hoping would be answered. I find the built-in audio alignment and VariAudio to be pretty efficient.
I'll admit that the pencil tool is a definite necessity when it comes to note transitions and cleaning vibrato, though...
VariAudio Or RePitch?
what is the name of the song? i wana listen to it
I think it’s a demo just for this video
Спасибо❤
Dear Makepopmusic,
I'm John, Nice to meet you. I produce music too. I need a producer to work on my album.

I don't mind the GUI at all. I have never liked Melodyne. I don't like the workflow and I kinda hate the sound of it.
