    • @MedicinewithDrMoran
      @MedicinewithDrMoran  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      PCR is used throughout medicine to confirm diagnoses particularly with infectious diseases. While there are limitations of the test, especially if you accept high cycle threshold numbers, it is very helpful in confirming diagnoses. It performed well on the human challenge studies of this coronavirus (there's a video on my channel) where young healthy people were deliberately infected (for money) and were studied with a multitude of tests including viral culture and other tests of infectious notice as well as PCR, chest imaging, lateral flow/rapid antigen tests.

      Nonny, how transmissible something is can be measured by how many people a single person infects. For the current omicron variant it is approximately 5. Monkeypox would be on the order of 1 and as I said in the video the longest chain of transmission was only 9 people. Unless you have close contact with someone who has monkeypox you're not going to get it.

And just last November (2021), FIFTEEN vials of smallpox were discovered in a Merck vaccine research facility in Pennsylvania. Thanks very much, Dr Moran, for picking up the baton on this to help us laymen sort the wheat from the chaff circulating in the media.
    A couple of additional things to add on to what you've covered:
    The Case Fatality Rates mentioned are typically drawn from areas with poor general healthcare provision. Many of these deaths will be largely attributable mainly to untreated secondary infections (usually bacterial) due to lack of care provision, and the Case Fatality Rate would be unlikely to translate to such high levels in areas with better healthcare provision where secondary infections can be more effectively treated.
    Should community transmission become a widespread issue, we could end up in a Russian Flu type scenario (in terms of who is susceptible to pronounced symptoms, but not disease severity society-wide), where the young can better react to infection due to higher levels of naive immune-system composites, those mid-50s+ enjoying residual cross-protection from smallpox vaccination, with those in between likely to go through a rough couple of weeks if infected.
    Most likely is that monkey-pox will fade and not reach epidemic levels, and probably be remembered as a curiosity a short time from now. The thing we probably need to be most mindful of is avoiding the virus establishing itself among native species.
