Better than Ken Burns! Ken Burns compromises the truth to suit his narrative. He has no problem doubling down, and denying the fact that he misrepresents the truth to fill his narrative. I have walked and taken photos in this cemetery many times and I learned so much by watching your video. The information, music, video footage, archival materials, and editing are simply wonderful. Thank you!
I'm not sure where to begin on this one. There were so many stories that were interesting to learn about. From Burbank and how the city got it's name to Hattie and how she really was a great influence to our culture. I love the mausoleum that Hotchkiss has as well as the memorial that Rindge has. I also enjoyed hearing all of the stories of the veterans. Prudhont's monument stood out to me though. The ribbon that ended up reflecting his core values was in the shape of an S. That could also be symbolic of Shipwreck, Sea and Sailor just to name a few. Tattoos and the Navy have a deep connection so I like how they incorporated that but also the Anchor symbolizing that he held strong at his post. It looked as though there was a sabre under the anchor which said that he was below. The Freaks movie is interesting. It's difficult to say if public opinion was changing before the movie or if the movie changed public opinion. I have heard some things saying a little of both. But it does sort of mark a time period when the acts were starting to decline. There were many shows that toured the country. One of the more famous was Barnum which most people know. Excellent work my friend. I really enjoyed watching this one.
Thank you buddy! Prudont's story really got to me. I've been coming to and filming in Rosedale for over two years, and for the first year I walked by it a dozen times. Then finally it grabbed me, but the detail about Honor, Fidelity and Death was really the hook. About "Freaks," I would be interested in seeing the original cut (if it actually existed). In American cinema, Browning was way ahead of his time. Again, thank you for watching this rather lengthy edition. :)
@@graveexplorations it's interesting how certain memorials seem to speak to you at different times. I've experienced that as well. It rings especially true in the Victorian and Gothic cemeteries. Possibly in one of the sideshow or circus museums?
You're so right about how they speak. I've got one that has been calling out to me for almost 3 years. And for the same amount of time I've been researching the heck out of it but keep hitting a wall, but still it calls. One of these days I hope to make a video on the subject. As for the original print of "Freaks" I'm sure it locked away in a dusty attic or basement along with a copy of "London After Midnight." What a discovery that would make!
Who would thumbs down this video? I enjoyed so much hearing the stories of these people...it was well done and the people were all remembered with dignity. It was sort of like a real life Spoon River Anthology. They were not all stars but just people with regular lives who shaped an area. Some were notorious but even that was interesting. I look forward to watching more. I enjoy walking cemeteries myself and always wonder about the names behind the markers. Thank you so much for your effort !

His story really touched me as well. In New York City there is a wireless operator's memorial that was erected sometime around 1915. It's honors Jack Phillips who was lost on the Titanic, but it also lists other wireless operators who died at their posts, including Lawrence Prudhont.

I love how informative and nostalgic your videos are! Please make one about Home of Peace in East LA. So much history there. One of the remaining landmarks that LA's Jewish community was at one time nearby. That whole area is fascinating!

@@graveexplorations Your very welcome! Ohhh and Thank you so much for the name of the song! I found it. Such nice music! I watched all of your videos. I started watching them when I did a search for the old Whittier German cemetery. I used to walk by it on way to school over 40 years ago, and remembered the large black gravestone with the name "Krieter" ...not sure of spelling...., and it brought me to your videos. I sure hope you make more of them. There is a cemetery near Caliente & Walker Basin in Kern County. Have you ever been to that one? Its called Rankin Cemetery, you can google it. Its very old, and may interest you :) Thanks again friend for everything!
Hey Matt really would love one Tomestone I truly believe you will give it the respect and care that no one has ever done. Also the one in Old Town San Diego there is a sadness there for under the road and side street are graves that where pave over. Also stories have been told as I was growing up that homes and businesses where also built on graves no one was moved except the mayor everyone else was left to be paved over and build on top of.
Hi Dorothea, the last time I was in Old Town, about 10 years ago, I remember seeing painted marks on the asphalt indicating that it was a grave site. Same as you, I thought how sad it was. It reminded me of a poem by Vachel Lindsay called "What the Sexton Said."
Many people feel the way you do about GWTW, and its very difficult to defend a film that is so badly dated in it's philosophy about African Americans and slavery. But that said, there are some wonderful performances and Hattie McDaniel steals the movie. Thank you for watching and commenting :)
Outstanding as usual. Have you ever examined Hollywood Forever AKA Hollywood Memorial Park? Fascinating place, especially over the last 20 years, since all of the improvements. Downright spooky at times too...
Thank you Rick. Regarding HF, yes, I have been sneaking up on that one for quite some time. The reason being, is that I'm not sure how I want to approach it. It's the cemetery that is requested the most and I will definitely get there.
Grave Explorations -Started going there back in the mid-eighties, when the previous “regime” was in control. I saw the beginnings of the huge decline that came right before the current owners bought the place. It was sad, but I hadn’t seen just how awful it would soon get. I was last there in ‘90. Adam the Woo and Jordan the Lion as well as Arthur Dark have done extensive vlogs on the place, but I’m sure your efforts will be much more in-depth. Looking forward to it! 👍🏻
We have a very old cemetery (1700s) in Wilmington NC that I have walked through many times. I might go research some of those folks just for fun. Job well done!
Anna May Wong, was not just in attendance at the start of construction, at Grauman's Chinese Theater. She drove the first rivet and turned the first shovel of dirt at the site. She was as talented as she was beautiful. Rest in peace Anna
I've been subscribed to this channel about 1 year and I just got around to watching your series on Angelus-Rosedale. It was very interesting (as your other videos are) but I was a bit surprised that when you covered the Maier mausoleum (in part 2), you made no mentioned about how the Maier daughter was placed in the family mausoleum, not in a coffin, but on a couch. Also, Maier did not produce Eastside beer. It was his ex business partner that sold his partnership of Maier brewery to the Maier sons. The partner then started Los Angeles brewing company, which produced and sold Eastside beer. Maier brewery sold Brew 102. One the Maier sons is entombed in the main mausoleum at Calvary. His (son Edward) grandchildren now own the Susquehanna Brewing company.

Fascinating. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you for watching!
I walk though my local cemetery to pay respect to thoughs who founded Jackson Michigan, I have to say you do an awesome and informative vlog. Thank you. I know the time it takes to compile the history, and you nail it.
I love cemeteries and I love history so your vlog is just perfect.
Outstanding work . . . beautifully presented . . . Cheers!

This should be on national TV...do not forget where you come from...
Beautiful.

Thanks so much for watching and the sub :)
WELL DONE MATT -AS ALWAYS!!!! :)
Thank you Angel, I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
I love how informative and nostalgic your videos are! Please make one about Home of Peace in East LA. So much history there. One of the remaining landmarks that LA's Jewish community was at one time nearby. That whole area is fascinating!
May I ask what's the name of the music that's playing at 23:25? Beautiful song. And excellent documentaries you make, reminds me of Ken Burns.
Thank you for such high praise! I truly appreciate it. I believe the name of the song is Spanish Rose, you can find it in TH-cam creator studio. Thanks again for watching and your very kind words.
Appreciate all your research into the history of the stones , greetings from South Africa .
Amazing, thank you for all your research time.
You are very welcome, I truly appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment :)
@@graveexplorations where do I fine copy of that? Also have not been home in 20 years in Texas now.
@@dorotheawalker7985 Hi Dorothea, here is a link to the poem: www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/47377/what-the-sexton-said
Totally awesome tales of the past. Really enjoyed this!
Well done and I have never watched "Gone with the Wind" and never will.
Many people feel the way you do about GWTW, and its very difficult to defend a film that is so badly dated in it's philosophy about African Americans and slavery. But that said, there are some wonderful performances and Hattie McDaniel steals the movie. Thank you for watching and commenting :)
Well ,I loved "Gone With The Wind"! ,being from Georgia. . It sad that resentments are still being carried on that is a part of our history!
Don’t watch it for everyone of you assholes there’s millions and millions who have and will continue to watch
christorpher84 harsh much?
Your Posts are Magic....
The only statement I have about this outstanding presentation is..............I agree with every positive comment made previously. Thank you.
I loved both, Andy Rooney was someone I would stop what I was doing to listen.
Beautiful job.
Thank you :)
Thanks for the memories 🙂
Quite welcome!
Anna May Wong, was not just in attendance at the start of construction, at Grauman's Chinese Theater. She drove the first rivet and turned the first shovel of dirt at the site. She was as talented as she was beautiful. Rest in peace Anna
Thank you for sharing. I'm so glad she is finally getting the recognition she deserved so much in life.
Really enjoying these videos
Sentimentally brilliant
Fascinating insight on the Maier family, thank you for sharing!

Thank you for your intersting videos. Have you covered the Odd fellow cemtery, in East Los Angeles? Or the Pioneer cemetery in Daggett, California? Anyways, thanks again.
My Grandfather's Cemetery is at "La Funeraría de Angéls," in Mission, Texas. His name is Marío Andrés Silveíra Quíjano, (Keyhonno). Think you'll try to look it up, my Friend?
So cool!
Love your stories
Awesome video
Thank you for watching :)
Thank you.
Had to get some ice creme for this ..ok back watching
Excellent idea! I think I'll get myself some rocky road 🍦 :)
I can't seem to get a grip of my Father's Spirit, after all!!! 😭😭😭😭😭
Do you want to go over to Mission, Texas so that you'll find, my Grandfather's Gravestone? His name is Marío Andrés Silveíra Quíjano, (Keyhonno). My Grandfather is laid to rest at the Cemetery, called: "La Funeraría de Angéls," in Mission, Texas. That's where my Grandfather is laid to rest, my Friend.
Thank you for sharing! I hope someday to get out to Texas, so many beautiful and historic places to see.
@@graveexplorations, Of course you will, & you can find my Grandfather's Cemetery, located in Mission, Texas called: "La Funeraría De Angéls," my Friend. His Name is Marío Andrés Silveíra Quíjano, (Keyhonno).
❤ thank you .
Dammit man i love this channel!👌
You have done yourselves proud! Too bad you couldn't mention my grandpop or any of us Jenkins
Thank you Judith. Angelus-Rosedale is such and amazing place, I could go on making videos for years about all the remarkable people. By Find A Graves' count there are 34 Jenkins buried there, is there one in particular I should look for?
I’m curious what will you include next
To be honest, so am I (haha) although I am leaning in a particular direction, probably outside of California... stay tuned :)
Excellent channel!
IT'S INCREDIBLE.TONY HAS SPOKEN
Rest in peace Hattie McDaniel
. I know it was back in the day but shame on Hollywood cemetery
Anna May Wong needs to be talked about more. What a stunning woman
Shes a minority, she’s not white that’s why they didn’t mention a great artist. We have her on our quarters & she has a beautiful history!
