There's another story similar to this one. It's about a boy named Sipriotes who like Actaeon stumbled upon Artemis bathing and was caught. However the goddess gave him a choice between either dying or being transformed into a girl. Sipriotes chose the latter and spent the rest of his life as one of the Goddess's followers. While Sipriotes' transformation could be seen as either a blessing or curse depending who you ask, it's certainly better than being turned into a wild animal.

The myth is probably a beautiful metaphor. This is how I interpret it: Actaeon represents mankind. Artemis as a goddess represents the nature of the universe. So, when you try to unveil the secrets of nature, if you do it without care or respect, horrible things can happen to you. Think of a modern world example like GMOs or eugenics. Modern men try to see nature in all its "nakedness" and I am not sure we're considering the risks properly. The beauty of Greek mythology is that it is perennial because it can always be reinterpreted to suit modern life. :)

Making their very own existence pointless, oh and let's not forget that the world would be the same no mater what they have done, they can't create anything living or dead, nothing grows or dies, making all pointless and so this state will last till eternity and beyond and no matter if they will commit suicide or not on the next they come back to living with their whole memory of incident included, oh and they can't erase their memory as it will recover and they renember everything in 100%. This myth describes a dire childhood psychological injury, as many myths do, particularly Ovid's Metamorphoses of which this myth is perhaps the most dramatic. Here's another clue. This being Pride month, everyone respecting this month should be aware of and appreciate this myth. I know I do. I am Actaeon. I suffered this injury at age 4 or 5.
