I have used that product not only in my boat projects but also in carpentry and cars. It is very reliable and it dries super hard. Very cool that you show diy's some hacks of the trade. Great content as usual Captain. Let's go fishing 🎣.
If you have a small job or don't want to leave any waste in the tip, you can dispense it without the tip and mix it manually. You still get an even amount, just without the mixing action from the tip. Andy Miller from Boatworks Today recommends the flexible product for stress cracks. It allows enough movement so new cracks don't occur. I believe that he also gelcoats over it. Still loving the channel. We'll done.
Thank you for showing an easy way for DIYers and easy way to do boding on a seam. I enjoy watching your videos because it really shows all alternatives and ways to do projects from small to big. Thank you Captain Joe and Logan.
The one I used is from Total Boat, which they recommended for Thixo. You don't want the el cheapo ones. Someone recommended a Newborn as a good brand to check out. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
If you're doing a lot, Milwaukee M12 caulking gun is a forearm saver. I've ran thick caulk for 10 hours straight (Concrete filler on a long driveway) and was super easy. You couldn't even squeeze that stuff out with 2 hands on a cheap caulking gun.
A little bit of a side question: will the filler that you mix into the epoxy affect the strength of the fillet? West cotton fibre vs glass fibre cut vs wood powder?
Yes, adding some fibers will typically add strength to your thickened epoxy. Other powder based additives are more for help with gap filling or fairing. I have a video i made a few months back that demonstrates the use of almost all the popular epoxy additives. I'm sure if you scroll back through our video library, you will find lots of useful information. I hope this helps, and I appreciate you watching!
Thanks again, a great video. Would you consider a video on repairing a soft floor or soft area around a hatch or door? Product that can be used to replace the rotten wood once the rotten wood is removed? How to dispense it into the void.
I'm glad you are enjoying the videos! Sure, I would definitely consider doing a video like that for you all. We will be starting the floor replacement in our project boat very soon, so stay tuned and thanks for watching!
I've got a 1992 Sea Ray Sky Ray outboard. They are pretty rare now but cool boat. It needs a floor and a basic clean up of the gel coat. Can't wait to get started but I need some space! Thanks to you and Logan for the information! Did ya'll get snowed in!?
Nice! Your Sea Ray sounds like a great project boat! We got a blizzard, 8 to 10 inches of snow in the yard and shop. It is unheard of for our area! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Yes, it is great for smaller precision filling and repair, but I don't generally recommend using gelcoat over epoxy. I have not tried gelcoating over this particular formula, but that might be a good follow-up test, just to see how it reacts. No vinyl ester version of this one. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
@@FishBumpTV Great idea Joe my question was going to be, would it work on the transom as in where the sidewalls meet the floor, interested in the flex but scared because I always use what I call mud or pre-mixed fortified with fillers.
I haven't tried it in that exact application. It could possibly work, but I would lean towards using a more traditional, thickened gelcoat method. I hope this helps and thanks for watching and commenting!
I haven't used Thixo but I have used West systems 6-10, which I've been happy with. During the course of my project, I found a spring loaded caulk gun that when you release the trigger, the spring forces the plunger backwards, thus eliminating extra material being forced out of the nozzle.
I think it's worth giving a try for sure. Similar products, but more options with the Thixo. Thanks for sharing your experience with the channel and for watching!
I don’t know how I ended up here but I like the content/information. I may need to know some of the diy fiberglass info in the future. I subbed thanks for the videos/channel.
Great content! Your videos have given me the confidence to take on a big project! What did you use to bed your stringers on your bay boat? Doing cosa stringers soon and would love to see a walk-through. Using cosa and iso resin in the rebuild of a 1987 Radon 26 in California.
Thanks, I'm glad you are enjoying the content! Iso resin is very good, but myself and many others are upgrading to vinyl ester resin in more critical areas like stringers and transoms. It costs slightly more, but is considerably stronger. Fiberglass warehouse also offers a discount code for fish bump tv viewers if you mention it.There are quite a few options as far as bedding and filet materials. I usually recommend going back with similar methods to what the original manufacturers used. I hope this helps, and I wish you all the best with your project!
Handy for quick beads, saves time... But the waste factor is significant: A) once the tip i used it is done and next use needs a new tip and B) when the tube is opened the clock starts on shelf life. These tube tend to be best for jobs that use most or all of the tube.
Wow. I love it when I learn about new products that might make things easier for the diy'er. Thanks for sharing! 👍👍 PS; you answered my question about stitch and glue project before asking, lol.
Yo Captain Joe and hello Logan. Thank you for bringing this content to the world. It has sparked so many ideas for my own boat (trailer sailer) and has also helped me realize the difference between a repair that can wait vs a repair that can't and the little nuances to help tell the difference. Thank you! Question: Have you (or anybody reading this) found a use for West System 423 Graphite Powder? I am currently using it on the underside of a cabin-top sliding hatch AND on the cabin top where the hatch will slide. I have not found much info about it. It seems to be used on the bottom of a back country watercraft (canoe/kayak) that will come in contact with logs, beeching, or river bottoms. Other than that, what other uses would WS 423 be used for? Thanks Joe!
You are very welcome, and I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying the channel! I haven't used a lot of the ws 423, but it should help strengthen and fortify the epoxy resin. It can also just be used as a coloring agent to get a black or charcoal Grey epoxy. I hope this helps, and I wish you all the best with your projects!
That seems like it could possibly be a good application for Thixo. I'm not sure exactly how or what is added, but most epoxy, by its very nature is more flexible than polyester or vinyl ester. But maybe not as flexible as some polyurethane, like 5200 or 4200. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!
I have used alot of acetone in the past, and have had good success, but the dewaxers usually evaporate slower and give you more working time. They can all work though. I hope this helps and I appreciate you watching and commenting!
Thanks for the video Joe, looks like a nice line of products. I was trying to find some information on the psi holding power of this epoxy. Didn't find anything though. Any more info on that? Thanks, Jim
Glad you enjoyed the video! The holding power is substantial and in line with what you would expect with a quality epoxy resin system. I do know that some of that info is on the back of each cartridge, and I will try to touch on that for you all in a follow-up video. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment!
Plastic spoons work pretty well to spread adhesives, caulking, or epoxy...if you use your index finger inside the spoon to guide it and control the pressure...it also leaves the edges fairly smooth. 😊
I’ve watched tons of your videos and it seems there is so many options to fix things. I’d like to know what the best product for someone with zero experience that wants to fix spider cracks in gelcoat. I’m going to dremel out the cracks to clean them up but what is best to fill them with that I can sand and gelcoat over after. Thank you. Loving the channel. And yes I’ve seen your videos on fixing cracks etc but you use many different products but I’m confused on which is best for a first timer to learn on.
I always try to give our viewers several different options for different repairs because there isn't necessarily one perfect and best way to do a repair. After watching several methods, usually one method may make more sense to you, or some materials may not be available in your area, thus changing the methods you might use. Our videos are quite detailed, and if you follow them, you should be able to get decent results. Maybe some testing of different materials and methods on your end is a good idea prior to working on your actual repair. I hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
Really good product and easy to use. You can even thicken it up more with cabosil (I ran out of regular epoxy and needed to fill a small hole). Thanks for the video.
I can see many applications for the flex epoxy on a boat where it's not uncommon to glue small pieces of metal, such as backing plates, to reinforce the GRP hull at high-stress points. Cheers.
Sure, it's sandable and can be painted over. It has working characteristics very much like other popular epoxies. I hope this helps and I appreciate you watching!
@FishBumpTV any good local hardware store / old school true value seems to have them. Big box stores don't. Been a contractor since 93. Repetition matters ❤
Not necessarily, running it through a mixing tip vs mixing liquid in a cup are two different things. I can tell you this for sure, it is better to overmix than undermix! Thanks for watching!
That’s not new or unique. West system six10 is the same thing and been out for years. I think WS only has one formulation. Curious to know price comparison
Often when using various products dispensed by these caulking gun tools, relieving tension from the piston at the connecting rod lock mechanism is beneficial in preventing uncommanded flow of the product while the assembly is at rest. Respect should be given to the possibility of a discharge onto unprotected surfaces. 😊
