It was a funny movie. The horror occurred mostly off screen so I was glad that it was poking fun at gen z buzz words to make up for it. My theater was mostly empty but I saw a bunch of 10 year old boys laughing a lot. It was an ok time to pass the time much like Fall. I actually wished Pete Davidson stuck around longer because he was such a great heel

👍🏻 it’s on Netflix now I remember trying to look for this on its own because I liked horror movies I always watched these kind of horrors like infinity pool and x usually intoxicated as well so I probably don’t remember that much of this movie but thus far I’ve stopped all indulgences… 🍺 ❌

It is January in Md so I am hibernating from the cold and catching up on movies, so I selected this one today. I agree with Alonso about how the house started out as being a character but then it got dark and that is when it lost some points for me. Too dark so it got a lil confusing at times. It took me a minute to place Lee Pace, I know most know him from LOTR but I know him from Halt and Catch Fire, a criminally underrated show that I loved. Overall this was just ok. 6.6

Are all horror movies inherently "plays"? I hope A24 can sustain this momentum for a few more years. 🤞

Interesting, this may be a body count movie that I can watch without nightmares! It sounds like a weird combo of The Big Chill (1983), The Ice Storm (1997), The Anniversary Party (2001) and any Agatha Christie movie.

The cinematography is such high quality. The intro is very intense with sharp filming , vibrant colours and an ominous yet fun soundtrack! It set the tone for a fantastic slasher...but then it turned to pure silliness. The film needed to make its mind up really. The intensity and potency kind of got lost. Good fun nevertheless and certainly watchable. The ending was funny.

you have summed it up will. After an interesting set up it turns to silliness and there are plot holes as well. In a murder mystery you have to convince the audience but after the first kill, the rest is not convincing at all. The cinematography does help in the atmosphere and it captures the action very well. But it cannot hide for lack of logic and spontaneity.
The actions of the characters will just not convince you. It is watchable because the plot does move ahead but whatever is happening does not seem very spontaneous. A single person acting irrationally or silly is acceptable but a whole group just acting plain dumb collectively is a stretch. The ending is funny but that too comes out of nowhere. Watchable, with some good characters but clearly not as smart as it thinks it is. A 6 from me.

I'm going to give this a try, and see, if I can overcome my apathy to Pete Davidson's screen presence.

I’ve found Pete Davidson to be good in film roles. He’s good as a character, unlike his stand up where he’s writing his own shit

It starting to look like A24 is going to be one of those studios that keeps the small to medium budget movies in theaters while everyone else shoots out massive blockbuster chi movies. I only say because all their films have had pretty wide releases this year and it vary good for their budget. It use be you hear about movies like this maybe see a trailer or a couple reviews but only get to watch it when it shows up on DVD o Blue ray months down the line when you half remember hearing about.

It was so boring for a lot of it. The one scene with any sense of humour was the late movie scene with actually somewhat funny dialogue but the rest of it was kind of a dud. The ending was sort of good and out of left field. Considering so much of the movie was shot in the dark with no light. You have no semblance of place or tension

It's touched upon briefly by Christy, but I can't stress enough how unlikable every single character is (including the creepiness factor of Lee Pace's character even being there). I was rooting for all of them to get killed off.
I'm with Alonzo, it's entertaining but with flaws, I'd give it 7. It should've been funnier, and should've had at least one protagonist to care about.

See, this is one of the reasons why I like them to give a number score with their review. Because it helps me get a fuller idea of what they think of the movie. Because sometimes I can be fooled if I go only by what they are saying about it.
For instance, from what Alfonso was saying t I definitely thought he'd score the movie higher than a 6 and a half. . In such a case I might be thinking that maybe I should run out and see it right away. . But when the critic then gives it a score of only 6-and-a-half, I think maybe it can wait. And there are times when the reverse is true. When they give a movie a higher score than I was expecting from what they were saying about it.
On 2nd and 3rd viewing (which I did just because I was wondering why I misread him) of the video, it is easier to pick out that Alfonso liked it more than he loved it, but when 1st viewing the video, he seems to talk a lot more about what he liked and goes into what he liked, then what he wasn't crazy about, leading me to expect a score higher then 6-and-a-half.
It doesn't happen with these guys that frequently but it does happen on occasion

Umm you can use your own mind and go by how you truly felt watching the trailer??? I saw the trailer only once and feels like a very trippy psychedelic kind of thriller. It seemed ok to me like not A24's strongest film this year but it's at least decent. I feel Nope and Bullet train fell short of high expectations and I wish they were stronger. It seems like the opposite case with this movie!

But just because Alonso (or any other reviewer) gives it a rating, it doesn't mean that would be how you feel. eg) they can give it a 4 but it could still be one of your favorite movies of the year, or vice versa. He could give it an 8, in which you'd run out to watch it but it's more of a 3 for you. For that, I would argue hearing their thoughts is far more valuable than numbers. What if what he enjoyed doesn't sound all that fun for you? The bottom line is, as Nikita mentioned above, you should just check it out if the movie seems interesting to you.

@@BreakfastAllDay I think most of us are getting Alonso confused with Alfonso Durian director of Gravity and Roma that's why I also thought his name's Alfonso but thanks so much for correcting and informing us.

They mention that all the characters in the movie are wealthy or from wealthy families, but neither Alonso nor Christy brought up class as an issue. They should have, if only to say there was no class element brought up. As it is, I'm left wondering if this isn't a film made by a wealthy filmmaker about wealthy young people and the wealthy critics (sorry, Alonzo, Christy, I know nothing about your finances, but I assume you're pretty well off for a variety of reasons) don't notice or care because it all seems so perfectly natural to them.

This movie was legit great. It's not going to be for everyone. If you're on board for the satire, this movie will be one of the best comedies you'll see all year. But if some find the characters unbearable, I could see people hating this movie. My friend was sighing through the whole thing cause he wasn't engaging with it on a character level and grasping the satire. He cares more about plot and this movie doesn't really go anywhere significantly plot-wise. But with this movie, for me, that was a good thing. The final reveal is actually fantastic, and makes perfect sense for the movie as a whole. On top of that, the filmmaking and performances were truly top notch. I was impressed with every one of the younger actors, and Lee Pace was hilarious as well. The cinematography was also beautiful, and the pulsing score is used minimally but is effective in building up tension when it comes in. There are a few smaller flaws, but I was really impressed. I wasn't sure how I'd feel going in, even though I was looking forward to it. But this movie far exceeded my expectations. I will be watching whatever this director does next. She did terrific work here. A24 is on a roll this year.
