    As someone who IS Gen Z, I went in this film extremely reserved because of Sarah DeLappe being a millennial. That being said, my expectations were blown away. It didn't feel mean spirited like a lot of "Gen Z satire" feels and I think they really did accurately capture the essence of a group of (toxic) Gen Z friends. So excited to see this again

      @@swvi9459 Not really. It's just a term for anyone born between roughly '97 and 2012. Also, I think most of the actors in this film were millenials playing Gen Zers or at least on that cusp.

    Saw this at the alamo drafthouse with a packed crowd with glowsticks similar to the film. What an absolute blast. Some great tension and batshit insane twists throughout but also one of my favorite comedys of the past few year's. Rachel Sennott is a fucking riot.
    Also as a member of gen z, this does a phenomenal job at starizing/poking fun of some of the more social media savvy, privileged white allie type of people very well. (Which is funny considering there were some parts of the internet that thought this was a film worshiping those type of people)
    I'm so glad A24 this year is doing original slasher movies like X and Bodies Bodies Bodies that pushes the subgenre foward into a new era. Hope they keep up with these type of films in the future.

    I'm far from a high schooler but I do still enjoy well written teen/high school movies. Two recent ones were Booksmart and Edge of Seventeen. The characters were smart and well written and didn't make me feel out of touch watching it because the themes still resonate. (I'm an older dinosaur than you, Dan!)

      Why? Most of Dutch cinema sucks ass, we have just two good well-known directors that we can celebrate, but they left real quick to Hollywood, we haven’t contributed anything to European cinema in decades. Our movie culture is so completely vacant, there’s barely even a film-going culture compared to neighbouring countries. Its honestly depressing, so i dont really associate the Dutch with cinema in any positive way, all the good stuff we produced was at least 30 years back and ppl like Rutger Hauer, Jeroen Krabbe, Hoyte van Hoytema, Famke Janssen.

    I pet peeve of mine is when people create do's and don'ts for writing. Like only gen z can write gen z characters or only black people can write black culture or all sequels are worse. I think people's real issue is with bad writing and insensitivity. I can't lie though sometimes I wonder if I'm wrong so it's always good to have a movie remind me that different perspectives are a good thing. I wasn't too interested in this movie originally but after your review and seeing it's a24 I'll definitely be checking it out.

    • @ayoa1173
      @ayoa1173 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Insensitivity often comes from lack of familiarity with the perspective of the subject being written. A popular writing quote is "write what you know." It is important for a writer to actually understand the perspective of their characters and someone in the writer's room should be able to speak to the nuance of an authentic experience or else the writing may devolve into generalizations and stereotypes because the writer(s) may only have a surface level understanding of their characters.

    • @kevinschultz6091
      @kevinschultz6091 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it's not so much that (for example) white people can't write black people - but rather, if you're white and you're writing about a black character, you'd better have your sources for backing it up. (Of course, this isn't just about race - as a white dude, I would have trouble writing about a white New Yorker, as I simply don't know New York aside from a 4-day weekend I spent there earlier this year. I mean, I could probably do upper-middle class straight and White - but New York is a very specific place, and I simply wouldn't be able to do justice to someone who was born and raised there.)
      This also shows up in writing, usually in the breach - ie, identifying what you know by identifying what you're BAD at writing about. The example I know is when a writer uses the phrase "they were a typical X" - without actually showing what that means.
      At the least, it indicates that the author doesn't really know what that means; at the worst, it's a dog whistle for classism or racism.

    • @shanetaylor761
      @shanetaylor761 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kevinschultz6091 that's exactly how I feel. Like Louie ck had no business helping write pootie tang and yet the end result was great lol. Having grown up spending time with all types of ethnicities, age groups, and sexual orientations I couldn't imagine being a writer and only wanting to stay in one narrow lane. So often it's people trying to gatekeep on behalf of groups they don't even identify with because they feel awkward. Honestly I don't even mind gender swaps which are considered blasphemy lol. I will admit the track record for that isn't always great though. I think the one that bugs me the most is sequel hate. It's like the only way to be a true fan of something is to never want it to continue.

    • @kevinschultz6091
      @kevinschultz6091 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@shanetaylor761 - The recommendation I remember from one of my creative writing classes (I have an English degree), was "write what you know, but not too much".
      That is, yes: you really should pull your writing from a place of personal experience: setting, culture, religion, etc. all go into making a character, and your stories will be much more authentic if you, y'know, actually know what you're writing about.
      HOWEVER - the recommendation is to not COMPLETELY stay in your comfort zone. Because if you do so, you usually end up making assumptions about things that are obvious to you (because it's as common as the air you breathe), but wouldn't necessarily be to your audience - such as the smell of a particular part of a city, for example. You don't think about it because it's always been there, but it's concrete detail that would be useful for an audience to know.
      As such, the recommendation was to change one thing about a character - be it gender, or age, or location, or SOMETHING - this forces the author to re-examine their assumptions about scene and culture and plot and whatnot, because they have to force themselves to see their own experience through a different lens. Which, in turn, tends to make for a more interesting, layered story.

    I have a weird relationship with this movie.
    I didn't like the characters or even find the "comedy" funny. It's probably just me because I honestly don't like the culture that this cast represents. At all. And I'm of Gen z. Just not *that* kind of Gen z.
    It was a real chore listening to these characters discuss all the modern issues and Gen z lingo use.
    I honestly only stayed for the mystery and the well, rather dope production value with its set pieces, cinematography, and writing.
    What really made the film for me was the ending. It was perfect imo that there wasn't a killer because it would put the main cast in the positions of the victims of a more vile force, or otherwise, the heroes of the story.
    I didn't feel that these characters deserved that because it would also justify, in a sense, their thoughts and actions up to this point.
    It was fitting that it was their own narcissism and wickedness that was the true killer the entire time.
    Also, Pete Davidsons character accidentally killing himself while trying to look macho on tick tock made perfect sense as the inciting incident of this murder mystery. As funny as it was, I honestly can't stand those ppl in real life 😂

    "It doesn't lean too hard in one direction or the other"...that's actually my main complaint about it and why the film ultimately didn't work for me. Well it’s happened. I never thought I would but Dan I completely disagree. I found this extremely boring, uninspired and annoying. The trailer made me think it was the film you are describing, mild pokes at at generational quips and a fresh take on a classic set up. Instead I found the twists obvious and irrelevant considering I didn’t connect with the characters. It was not really tongue in cheek or intentionally funny and the first words when the film ended came from some “gen z” in front of me who nailed it with “that was shit”.
    Glad to see other people enjoyed it but it’s a no from me.

      You hardly ever hear anything negative about Pete from anyone who has actually been around him. You hear a lot that he is kind, polite, generous etc. He has maintained friendships with people he met as a teenager. Most of the negativity towards Pete comes from people on the internet who have never been in the same room with him. Usually they have never even watched an interview of him either.

      @@TryingToWakeUp-qb7iu Making a smart a comment doesn't make what I said any less true. The way people who know him talk about him is nearly always positive. People like Bill Burr, Pamela Adlon, Bell Powley from TKOSI praised Pete. His friend Ricky Velez who he put in that movie, Pete met him when Pete was only 16. He later was the producer for Ricky's standup special. The cast of Bodies speaks well of him also.

    This movie stunk, all the characters were annoying and unlikeable, no character development, no one to root for didn't care who lived or died, I rooted for the killer to kill all the dumb annoying characters but the twist is that there is no killer, all accidental deaths, lame & boring, just girls wondering around the mansion or arguing that's literally it
