  • Vibratory tumblers are pretty awesome bits of kit! I recently picked one up for finishing small parts made from aluminium and brass, figured it would make sense to include everybody in some media testing!
The media used in this test were:
    Gunson Ceramic
    www.gunson.co.uk/product/77161
    Gunson Brown Resin
    www.gunson.co.uk/product/77160
    Frost Walnut Shell
    www.frost.co.uk/walnut-shell-...
The tumbler I picked up is:
    www.gunson.co.uk/product/77159
(Get on eBay, it's half that price)

I wanted to comment on your latest video. I have only now come across your channel and after only watching 2 videos i have instantly subscribed. The level of detail and precision in your builds IMO is second to none, keep up the great work.

Thanks so much for the detail video. I plasma cut aluminum keychains I think this will work for deburning them. I definitely subscribing.

Thanks for the “scientific” testing of media on Al-loo-meh-num. (vs Al loo minEum) This sort of A/B testing really shows the effects of the tumbler media instead of guessing from a catelog entry. Appreciate the diligence & effort; a 20m video took 5 days of work to complete.

Cris Rogers You’re welcome! Hopefully it’ll be helpful for other considering picking on up. I learned a lot during this testing, some finishes were very unexpected too.

Different shapes of media also effect your finish, if you want a really good smooth finish you need to use rounder softer shapes, the tirangles you have their are for cutting more so you'll need to put your parts in for less time and also it wont give you as smooth off a finish as you want as the corners dig in, rounder edges on your media smoother finish, if you want super smooth use sort of like resing marbles or ceramic marbles.
I use larger scale rumblers all the time, we mainily use it for Stainless and steel as aluminium parts in a wet rumbler unless they are larger with lots of form to them they stick, 2 flat aluminium surfaces even with finishing compound stick.
Stainless steel and steel you can near on mirror polish with a good compound and the right media.

Really loved this media testing, I found some cat litter (please don't laugh) made from 100% re-claimed lining of the walnut shell and thought it might be a good cheap option for polishing - Applaws Nature's Calling Cat Litter 2.7kg - would love to see if it works - currently only $10 Australian so a very cheap alternative

Try adding a little citric acid. It can be found in powder form for deoderizing drains. It give the aluminum a nice brite finish.

what kit do you use to bend your mustache? you should get one of those coil kits and bend it into a spiral! that would be awesome!

Could you try using just sand? wouldnt that do a pretty decent job? My bet is it would be a little more abrasive than the Walnut but not as much as the resin.

    • @bittech1
      @bittech1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Probably would. I looked through a bunch of other tumbler videos and many of the fine grits seemed to be great for cleaning but not so much for finishing. I'll try with some other stuff later on though definitely, it's such a cool little machine.

very interesting, i'm pretty intrigued by the speckly gunmetal / concretey / acid corroded look from the ceramic media. i think i like it.
don't people often use sand in these tumblers? you might be able to borrow some from a playground or building site nearby. i imagine that it'll remove burrs and sharp edges quite well but leave a smooth, uniform finish, similar to sand blasting.
this has potential for a fun series. i think you also need to see what happens to acrylic, the stainless steel pipes planned for Aquaseras and maybe see if you can raise the grain in certain woods for some very interesting textures.
definitely put together a spreadsheet or sample table wall art display before you lose track ;-P

DMonZ1988 I did try acrylic but the results were terrible with these media, the walnut did nothing at all and the resin took a whole day to frost it (and was quite uneven).
I do want to try it with sand blasting media, I’m thinking the aluminium oxide you can use might work very well since it’s very abrasive but also fine.

Well first have a filter ventilator always blow away dust alway have everything organized in boxes if you need something bring it up but never leave it in its own in some random place and forgeting it cause next time you will bring more and more things and that stack up there like trash another is to vacuum your place regularly and try to wipe the tables at least once

I'd also try sanding the part down to a fine grit sandpaper then using the walnut media.

👋🏼 Wondering if you wouldn’t mind letting me know where I can get hold of, along with what it’s called, the little rectangular steel block with the holes drilled through it, that is sitting on the Insize Precision Measurement plinth to your left at the beginning of this video? I’ve seen them before, but have no idea what they’re called and they look very useful, what with them being weighty and perfectly square, to use as an aid for building models, which is something that I do. Enjoy the channel and I’m very jealous of your ‘shed’. Keep on tinkering. Regards Mikey

Tumblers should be filled a good two thirds, otherwise it won’t work as well as it should as there won’t be as much tumbling.

Please stop making the music louder than your voice. It is very annoying turning the volume up and down as I watch.
