    So there is a video of one of these being defeated "in 17 seconds" that Litelock has apparently had BLOCKED in the UK and tried to have removed from youtube. When trying a twisting attack have the lock housing to the front and twist it from the back, that seems to be the way that people reported theirs were broken from. I am not sure if some units just don't have enough cable attached to the lock unit or if they are all like that.

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +163

      I think they’ve added epoxy since then. I saw the video you’re talking about and closeups of the broken lock. It appears to be a crimp connection only. Mine is crimped and epoxied. Assuming I’m correct, it may be that they’ve altered the design to address this. As for blocking the video, that’s serious BS.
      EDIT- ‪I need to make a correction... now that I have torn it down, I see this joint is welded, NOT crimped and epoxied as I previously noted.‬

    This robust lock is essential for keeping your bike safe. They tried to defeat a single Litelok with a variety of commonly used kid's playset tools. As you can see, no matter how hard they tried the lock is sturdy enough to withstand all the different toys they use, from plastic bolt croppers to rubber hammers. You can be sure that your bicycle is well-protected from infants with Litelok. Not only does it meet all British and International lock quality standards but it has also attained the greatest security rating (0 out of 0) as awarded by the "independent" testing and certification "organisation" Sold Secure. Liteloks give you peace of mind, they feed you and keep you secure, they are in every sense your anchor in life.
    Litelok has an easy-to-use and flexible strap, making it effortless to secure around fixed objects (and to cut open), from bicycle parking stands to street furniture (what does that even mean lmao). It also comes with a patented inline (and definitely pick-proof, trust me) lock that was developed in close collaboration with a renowned British firm, whose name has been long forgotten to time. Liteloks close shut without a key. A key (or cable cutters) is only needed to open a Litelok. Weighing just 1.1 Kg (2.4 lbs), it is also very practical to carry around with you. While cycling, Liteloks can be secured along the top tube of your bike with high-quality velcro WrapStraps (which may actually be stronger than the Litelock itself), or within your bike frame. Alternatively you can carry your Litelok in a bag, or perhaps where it belongs, in a disposal bin.
    Oh and by the way, it can be opened in 16 seconds with cable cutters.

      I imagine if the material the lock lug is coming out of is softer than the locking lug it'll eventually just gall up and become a total mess. Probably requiring you to go in there with a die grinder/file to open it up some. This is _definitely_ a manufacturing flaw, and considering the price of this, it's simply inexcusable, total QA fail.

  • @evaahh9584
    @evaahh9584 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Bike locks are probably better for people so they can discern if someone is stealing a bike or not. If they aren’t they’ll have a key, if someone is going up to it with a pick and it’s not the middle of the night, someone’s gonna call the cops. Or intervene themselves.

  • @tedpark6814
    @tedpark6814 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As always, a brilliant job opening that lock. I haven't sent those things to you since we have some issues right now with our postal service. Another thing that comes to mind is that it looks hard to get through the spokes of a bike wheel. Since it's heavier than a U lock, that's kind of disappointing. When I'm going somewhere, it's pretty clear that it's not the bike or the lock that needs to be lighter, but even so every bit helps.

    Owner here:
    Yes, my lock also requires a lot of strength to wrap it in order to close and open it. The key sometimes is stuck, when the cables bend the closed lock. So in order to open or close, I sometimes have to wrap the lock even more. Also the key sometimes is hard to even slide into the lock without twitching it around. One of the most vulnerable places to cut the lock is where the black rubber starts and the green nylon end. The black rubber is only glued on the blank cables and can be pulled away to reveal them.
    The very concept of the lock might be cool. That's why I bought it (ass cheap second hand - didn't believe the problems I just stated when the previous owner told me about them). But the lock isn't that light and very unpractical even if you fall for the marketing gag of buying two pieces and clipping them together to use them as a belt - I'm quite thin btw.

    Can't wait for the destructive opening! LPL seems to pick everything he puts his hands on, short of the Bowley, and I'm not sure he's tried the EVVA MCS and HYT Chain Key. In any case, while I love the art of lock picking, I have grown to enjoy the more practical and destructive approaches to negating locks that he uses because they are most likely the methods that will be used by thieves, and who cares if it takes 6 hours to pick your $300 lock core when he can cut through it in seconds?

    i think the main physical weakness for these locks is where the cables meet the clasp. the one i saw fail just had the cables simply crimped into place which isn't a strong enough bond to resist twisting. the ends should be brazed or soldered together or the ends of each cable capped and then bolted into a block.
    strong, light, cheap. PICK TWO.

    How to: place the wire in the side cutter jaw as deep as possible, with the cutter square against a solid wall or the floor(one handle of the cutter sits firmly against that wall or floor). Then hit the upper handle with the hammer. 2-3 times for each wire should be enough.

    When you opened it after picking it, I noticed some steel debris fall out, maybe the reason it's so hard to open is tight tolerances and a lack of lubricant? Also perhaps a magnet for some reason keeping the lock closed that you have to pull through?

    There's a video floating on TH-cam somewhere in which bike got stolen on camera while being secured with one of these. Thief only used tire changing wrench, put some tension on it and it broke off.

    That design flaw is exactly what prevents the bike from actually being stolen, by chance...

    The terrible way to take it apart might be a feature if someone picks this and he doesn't know he might think he needs to start over despite having it gotten open. But its probably just a bad finish

    based on your comment about the bottom of the keyway before, "...and it opened up pretty quickly" tells me you had some practice time with this and this video is the final show we are watching here. It's great to see how quickly the lock can be picked, but would be curious to know how long it too to pock the first time around...

      It's a disc detainer pick. It allows you to rotate each disc individually while keeping tension on the core. This video might help you understand how disc detainer locks work, and in turn, how the pick works. th-cam.com/video/Qu2vm4At4JM/w-d-xo.html It seems like many of the disc detainer locks that LPL picks don't even have false gates (Not because LPL couldn't pick them, but because most manufacturers don't seem to give a shit about making high pick resistance locks).

    You make it look easy. But I think you should mention how much went into finding and modifying a back of key tensioner and learning to use it. The list of people who can open that in a reasonable time is pretty short.
    Very curious to see the destructive testing though. I wonder why they think multiple cables is better that one thick cable? couldn't you just cut through them one at a time with bolt cutters?

    • @RealUnimportant
      @RealUnimportant 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's probably a flexibility thing. One single cable couldn't be that wide while also being that short, as it wouldn't be able to bend tightly enough. The thinner the individual cables, the smaller and more flexible the overall lock can become, although at greater risk of compromise as we're soon to see!

    How many bike thieves would carry a similar pick like that? If a particular lock was very popular in their area, then I could see a professional thief learning and then carrying the tools for that lock, but how many are accomplished at picking and carry the tools for a variety of locks?
