    Matt, a polycarbide disc is your friend. It got the paint off my Dolomite without the scratches you get from a wire brush. You can get them for drills and angle grinders. I'm looking forward to more W123 and P6 content. Have you ever seen the Classic Britain channel? The banter is as entertaining as the P6 content.

      Are they the things that look like black pumice stone but feel like stiff rubber? I like those on body work taking off rust and paint, dont know why I didnt think of that for this.
      Yes, they are quite fun on that channel, W123 will be back when it stops raining!

    Nice to watch the update, particularly with the V8 engine. I have a lovely 74 Lunar Grey/black leather, 3500S on P5B Rostyles, with history from new (including its time registered in UK). Personal Import in 1976.. Sydney, Australia.

      Hi, I've had quite a few P6BBs in my time, both in UK and Oz and I reckon this cars spec is by far one of the nicest 3500S's I've ever had. The slightly larger P5B rostyles are the icing on the cake, really setting the car off. Interestingly the colour Lunar Grey was never offered here, you can only find it on personal imports. As you may know P6B autos were shipped over from NZ after going out there as CKD from UK. All 3500S's available in Australia and NZ new were fully assembled cars from UK, and they seem to have stuck to a few colours only, perhaps never thinking Lunar Grey would appeal here. It makes the car pretty unique and yes I've seen a few other Lunar Grey examples, all private imports or UK consular vehicles. Cheers

    Good job. If you're doing this stuff its worth making friends with your local plating company and then you can re-use your old bolts and also great for rusty coolant pipes and brackets. They're generally very cheap. Like £10 for a bucket of bolts .

    I consider anything (music, tv, etc.) from the 90s onwards as being modern... Old brake fluid can make an excellent paint stripper for small parts - new stripper can be a bit tame, and Nitromors is useless nowadays. Interestingly, one of the chemicals banned from modern paint stripper is used to decaffeinate tea! Best of luck with your engine rebuild. Thank you for your video :-)

  • @kyle8952
    @kyle8952 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Regarding the C5:
    Original motor is just some poxy 12V DC thing with a belt drive and a reduction gearbox. It's not really suitable because it was -unlike modern ebikes- extremely strict in it's interpretation of what 250W legally means. Worse, there's no throttle control, and the reduction gears are all made of plastic and disintegrate if you drive them too hard. I'd suggest a brushless motor with a proper controller and a twist throttle. About 750W (one horsepower) and sensible gearing will flatten the hills. Nowadays that'd be a 48V system, which also gives you the advantage that you'll ditch the heavy lead battery for a lithium one and get a lot more range. Just don't forget to legalize it by putting on a sticker that says 250w.
    If you convert the motor then you'll need a DC-DC converter to give 12V for the lights. You'll want one that can take a wide range of input voltages because lithium batteries sag a lot as they empty.
    Braking can be improved by replacing front wheel with an alloy rim. Don't use steel as they're heavy and slippery in the rain. Front brake should also be replaced, it's a normal bike caliper brake, the only thing you have to look out for is the correct reach or "drop" from the mounting hole to the rim. A cheap dual pivot from tektro is good, can be improved further with the right pads.
    Oh and the frame, they're fancy things made by welding two halfs along lengthways, make sure it isn't splitting open or else it might turn into a sled. Usually at the worst possible moment.

    • @furiousdriving
      @furiousdriving  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, lots of good points there. I was amazed when I saw bike brakes on there! Mine was barely used before it was stripped (interesting story to go with that for the video) so the frame should be fairly unstressed

    • @kyle8952
      @kyle8952 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@furiousdriving The front brake sinclair sent these things out with is awful. They decided on the absolute cheapest nasty stamped steel thing that flexes when you use it, then spent a fortune developing new pads that'd work properly on a lightweight plastic wheel, then found that the wheels were overheating and going soft on long downhills... If they'd have just used some weinmanns and a metal rim they'd have saved all that cost and it'd stop at least a bit better too.
      Ask Sir Clive to help you with a bit of household DIY and he'd spend a thousand pounds researching how to come up with a 40p substitute for a 50p paintbrush.
