Astro bot is an ultra polished incredibly fun game filled with joy. Too many people think games should be gritty grind fests. They are depressing people. Black Myth didn't even run well, it was half finished when it launched and technically deficient. It has only 'ok' reviews. It's not remotely GOTY. It's not even in my top five of the year. Only Elden Ring and Metaphor are in the same class as Astro bot from 2024. Maybe FF7 Rebirth if you're an FF fan.
I hardly had any issue technically with Wukong. I only heard of some problems on PC. But from what I understand it was fixed fairly quick. It's still a problem. But I don't think that is a big enough issues to cause a loss when you take into account the positives. And don't get me started on reviews... The is a big problem in gaming media reviews across the board.
@@MattackGaming The game had a host of technical issues on PS5. Lacking correct frame pacing or a working frame cap that might otherwise work with VRR. It was not a polished product. PC performance was similarly messy. It's an 8/10 game at best even ignoring the technical issues which it should be marked down for, no matter what type of game it is

Or maybe I am just special lol I agree that Astro Bot is more polished. But I don't think that is enough to justify the win. Also, I think game size should be considered too. It's easier to polish a 15-20 hour game vs a 40-50hr one.
@MattackGaming but you're not judging correctly, if the team made a 15-20hr long game and it released ultra polished, you shouldn't fault them for another company's lack of time in the oven for a 40hr game to release with issues. That shows bias and unfair evaluation metrics. Also, the connecting tissue between bosses in Wukong is non-existant and quite boring/uninspiring. Astrobot is a joy from start to finish.

The polish was just the top layer, in a time where most games are not nearly as lovingly well crafted. Black Myth played janky from day one and still hasn't been fixed properly.
Totally respect your opinion thinking wukong should have won and personally havent played it yet but I've been playing astro bot and man I can understand why it won its just like pure fun and a good way to unwind for the day and I feel alot of people who never even tried it are giving it a bunch of hate for no reason lol anyway good vid
If I had only played Astro Bot and not Black Myth Wukong, I think I would be on the same page. Astro Bot is a top tier gaming experience. I loved it. I just think Wukong is better. No hate for Astro Bot though. Glad you enjoyed the vid!
@ i don’t know, it’s tough cuz geoff keighly is an ass with a huge bias, elden ring dlc being nominated is insane but this year seemed actually fair, astro bot was refreshing and was clearly made with a lot of soul and care, i didn’t mind wukong but it felt like a lot of stuff ive played before and didnt really seem as memorable
@@Extrazzzz I agree that Astro Bot was more creative and fresh for sure. But I think when we are talking about a game's quality, freshness is only a small part of the consideration. There have been millions of action films, but if a really good one comes out, it's still really good regardless of how many other films are similar.

I can't really give my take on this topic because I've only played Astro Bot, but I was still happy to see it win because it's the most fun I've had gaming in a while. Wukong sounds like a pretty sweet game though so maybe I should give it a try! Great vid!

It's all about what game is the most popular, and with three gachas, a DLC, and Wukong for 2024, I question the validity about that award (Even though the right game won).

Astro Bot is really good. But I don't play many platformers. So I don't know how it ranks with it's peers. Yeah, the critics definitely hurt it's chances.

He thinks he's a serious gamer because he plays games like witcher that have "dark" stories...but again, these are games. You're allowed to have nice graphics but as an AFTERTHOUGHT to gameplay. He still doesnt get it.
I haven't played either yet, but I can't help but think one more factor in Astro Bots favor was that it's way easier to review for a professional reviewer, who doesn't have unlimited hours to play long game... Not that this is an excuse, as I'm tired of hearing reviewers say "we need shorter games", as you almost never hear this from actual players.. but I think that may have helped sway the professionals...
I dont like games that visually look washed out and gray anymore. I used to be a die hard fan of all the Dark souls like games until i realized spending 100s of hours did not actually bring me any joy. I was just addicted to feeling like I was good enough to power through a difficult game. Im over all that, I use video games to have fun now. Astrobot is the right winner in my view.
Most people are casual busy adults or kids or parents playing with their kids. The Nintendo switch is popular because of the cutesy fun casual games you can play with family
@ most people find souls games too hard so they can’t participate. The only souls game I beat was Sekiro so I get the satisfaction in beating them it’s amazing but like they’re just not easy to casually enjoy lol you always gotta be hype

Yes... because the very deep, serious and mediocre grayscale aesthetic of a bad game with really bad gameplay with zero creativity should have won and the adults too busy for gaming or aprents playing with their kids decided it was game of the year and not the actual serious gamers who actually have to play all these games. The second astro bot was realized, many people suggested it was so good it was very likely going to win game of the year. Again, gameplay....not graphics. Gameplay....gameplay is important. Not graphics. And the graphics in Wukong arent even good.

I agree. Wukong felt amazing to play. I loved Astro Bot too. But it just didn't have the whole package for a GOTY IMO.
