When I was around 18 I went to a meditation retreat in upstate NY and was so struck by the powerful & angelic vibe of the woman who owned the space. She had been a High Priestess and many other things, and she told me "It doesn't matter who you're praying to, as long as you pray." It's been 9 years & I still think of it regularly

You had me at doing nothing!
When you said it I just felt so represented. My altar is partly thought of as a cathedral inspiring this awe of being in a space large enough for all of you. This is doing nothing at its most healing.
Thank you for the beautiful glimpse into another traveller's path. :)

Nuno Atalaia I have a picture of the inside of a local cathedral at the center of my altar for this very purpose! 🌟It is a wondrous feeling.. simply allowing oneself to be in the space.

I love that you started with “nothing”. I am a big fan of doing nothing at the altar. I sit, I drink tea, I light some incense and I just *be* for a while. Occasionally I do find myself spontaneously pottering, or singing, or humming, or just chatting randomly to my deities, but not always. It makes me feel incredibly centred and definitely does create a sense of locking in to my witchiness and my practice.

For me personally I have noticed (since I am German) that the German word for "prayer" (Gebet) is very connected to Christianity in my mind so it feels weird to use it BUT the first time I heard the word "pray" was in "Eat. Pray. Love" and I love that movie and so it never had any negative connotation and the first time I heard the word "prayer" was within a pagan context and so it sounds like something exciting to me and not like weird church stuff, which is what I associate with the German word "Gebet".
So maybe for people who speak more than one language try using a word in your other language(s) and see how that feels.

    My top ten altar-side activities.
    1. Speak to my late brother and nephew.
    2. Storytelling; telling my brother and nephew some sort of story.
    3. Practice the ocarina (a recent thing).
    4. Put on the altar lights (I can't have candles in the flat).
    5. Clean and dust, polish the shiny stuff and rearrange.
    6. Decorate with new stuff and remove old stuff that feels stale.
    7. Meditate.
    8. Study.
    9. Cleanse.
    10. Stand still and sense the atmosphere and mood of the world around me.

I think it was very interesting to hear about different aspects of magickal/manifesting workings that I don't normally hear about such as the scripting. I had to chuckle when you did the Ong Namo Guru Dev chant and then afterwards said " Fuckin' luv it!" :D I always love seeing your quirky and unique accessories like the necklace you were wearing in this video and I love the whimsical pattern on your blouse. The deities you work with are interesting. I don't normally don't see or hear much about working with either of them but in my earlier days I used to work with Mary. I did the rosary prayers and I even wore a scapular. So from my early days with these practices I don't find it odd to see when a person incorporates Mary or other Christian elements into their magickal practices and workings even if others might. And having the mirror on your altar reminded me of how I used to keep a small mirror on my altar to reflect the negative away. I had forgotten I used to do that!

As a fellow chaote, it felt very reassuring to not and go "same" to most of these - but done at the alter in very different capacities and angles. When you pointed it out, I have noticed I sometimes fall out of practice due to feeling the pressure of not "doing" anything while there. Thank you so much for sharing this.

Yes, a special video on scripting and another one on mirror work, please! Also, thank you for demystifying the time spent at the altar and infusing it with a beautiful, everyday sacredness and joy. It might help me deal with a dilemma I am facing at the moment - due to severe chronic back pain, I cannot sit on the floor for long, so a month and a half ago I bought a beautiful writing table, built high shelves on top of it, filled them with my Goddess "stuff", decorated it elaborately, created a multi-level altar that still takes my breath away - and never sat at it for one minute. I am still looking at it and admiring it from afar, notebooks and incense aon it ready, and yet - a ritual while sitting on a chair? A circle around a table, while sitting AT the table? "No, no, no, very unwitchy", my mind screams. I just cannot break through this idea that it is not a "proper" altar, or a "proper" circle, or a "proper" ritual. (I literally started to cry out of shere frustration now...) Maybe this video can help me to finally sit at my lovely Hecatean realm tonight, and build my own way of working at it, of finally feeling it's sanctity. Honestly, it wouldn't be the first time KellyAnne has turned my understanding of magick upside down and helped me make it more joyfull and more personal... Blessed be! (Any similar experiences, ideas and suggestions are more than welcome!)

Just discovered your site a few days ago and I'm really enjoying. Perhaps because you're so totally different from me. (I'm an 80 year old ex hippy) and yet your ideas are so clear. I've been "pottering" with the occult since my mom gave me some Swami Vivakananda books when i was thirteen, but it was always about meditating, elevating my spirit etc. (Getting high actually) never about magik! Oh my god no! Thats egoist. Skria, heavy karma! Well I'm into magik since about six months ago. Shit! I havent had this much fun since i discovered acid back in '72. I'm definitely a big fan of yours. God/s bless.

What a lovely video! Thank you for making this, it had a wonderful impact on me. I'm still sort of putting myself back together from the hullabaloo of the last couple years, but this definitely inspired me to have a more open attitude with myself about how I incorporate magick into my daily life. After our most recent move back to Iowa (USA) from Michigan, I don't have the place or resources for an altar at this time... so I very much appreciated that you said you can do any of these things without having an altar as well. I'm very excited about trying scripting, I've never heard it called that before but I'm glad to have a framework to wrap around that activity, and a little more structure in my mind at least to dedicate some more time to it. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into collecting these ideas and of course everything you do, you are such a gift to the community and a treasure for our time. Thanks so much for this.

Puttering is commonly used in the Appalachian/southern region of the US. I putter around nearly every day!

This was so inspiring and exactly when I needed it!! Thank you so much, Kelly Ann. Also, very excited about both your videos on morning pages and your past Books of Mirrors. ☺️

Your videos always seem to me like coincidences. That's absolutely what I needed, thank you very much!

Very useful video! Lately I more often found myself sitting and staring at my altair and just admiring, how beautiful and neat it is. It's pretty easy to do, since it's right next to my working zone, so I can see it from my usual seat. Of cause, I prey at my altair too. And do some Lenormand spreads. Unfortunately, it's not big enough to much anything else there, but I feel, watching my altair is already my favorite way to use it (:

I’ve started to feel that prayer is like tuning an instrument…we’re tuning our instrument to the Divine…

I'd love a video on scripting! Especially in the context of the intersection of magick/LOA. The same goes for mirror work. I've always had a hard time sticking to morning pages - so I'm excited to hear more about your experience! Such a lovely video - thanks Kelly-Ann! :)

I am the queen of pottering 😄 and I am so grateful that, as well as sharing a fantastic list of witchy activities (the chanting was beautiful), you opened with not doing, “just” being ❤️

I'm so glad other people love to just sit and do nothing at their altars! It's a very important nothing in my opinion. I find cleaning my altar extremely meditative (and often when I'm just sitting I end up cleaning because cat hair and incense dust make for rather sneezy meditations). I'd love to hear more on scripting - the idea makes my writer-brain's ears perk up and go "Barooo?"

This is great, you do all the same things as I do at my altar and I also have a central mirror as it's a 19th C dresser =] x
