👍🏻I have a question, I work with a guy that says he doesn’t shut the water off the device to test it. I’ve asked him to show me, but that hasn’t happened yet. I’m I in the right to say that you can’t test the device without turning off the flow?

So the way we have it set up with our programs, we utilize either the USC 10th Edition or the ASSE 5000 procedures from like those textbooks, depending on the area, both of those include shutting either one or both of the shutoff valves during the test. You have to confirm a no flow condition in order to properly test a check valve. Some people do classes or tests without doing this but they are using older procedures, generally before 2000 they didn’t confirm no flow but now they do, some states still do it that way like they’re okay with the older procedures, but to answer your question the USC and ASSE procedures which are updated regularly include shutting off the water during the test. The idea is that a leaking check valve would appear to be working fine if there is flow through the assembly since the leak would not be apparent if there is flow
