  • This is how I repaired the trapped canvas problem on my Porsche Boxster convertible hood. It is easy and requires no specialist tools.
    Ease factor of 2.

    This worked for me. Far cheaper and while not exactly a simple fix its definitely preferable over replacing the entire soft top or having Porsche do any sort of repairs and making ridiculous price justifications for the labor. Porsche is a car like any other.

      Indeed. I think watching the video twice, a tea and then doing the job makes it just a little more easier.

    Cracking video. I'm going to follow this over the next few days as my roof is doing the same thing.

      Ian it is so easy. You just need scissors, good quality elastic tape (do not skimp) needle and thread and a torx set with a little warm weather. 30 minute job.

    Great vid, just checked mine out and the previous owner tried this using staples that have given way. Just a small tip the elastic used by Porsche appears to be standard button hole elastic that you can get in any haberdashery. Subscribed.

      Thank you Spartan. It's just such an easy job that looks difficult. We'll done on getting it sorted.

      There's another TH-cam video to fix this problem, and in that narration the person uses a stapler. Good to know the stapler isn't a long-term solution.

      It’s. April 2022 and my repair is still going strong.

    Instead of stiching, you can use staples, come from both sides.

    • @Cuttothechase
      @Cuttothechase  ปีที่แล้ว

      You could do that too if you are not comfortable with stitching. Stitches are ideal as they are tried and tested on all the garments we use however people have used staples too.

    Great vid. I notice your rear spoiler is different? Where is it from? I have a 2005 987. Keep up the great work👍

      It came as part of the spec on a 987.1SE. I think it's very similar if not the same as the Cayman.

    Hello !
    My 2009 987.2 has exactly the same roof problem, as a new owner (3weeks) didn't realise there was a problem!
    Can you tell me please...... what width of elastic did you use also any particular strength of elasticity?
    Thanks,
    Richard 👍

    • @Cuttothechase
      @Cuttothechase  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is controversy surrounding the type of elastic etc. Porsche use an elastic with button holes already in. The thought is that as elasticity is lost, you can adjust appropriately. In reality, once its lost, its lost through the entire length.
      I know nothing about quality of elastics however my mum did and I believe she bought that bit from John Lewis 20 years ago.
      I would buy from John Lewis haberdashery. Mine was about1.25cm wide if that helps. Original was 1cm I believe.
      You got this! No mechanic knows so there is no point asking. You do the job and learn from it.
      Great cars are they not? Congratulations.

      Thanks for your reply !
      I've bought Trimming shop button hole elastic tape stretchable cord, it's 25 mm wide...... hopefully it'll do a decent enough repair !
      Yeah..... only problem they seem to be a hard ride on the suspension ? Are they all like that !

    • @Cuttothechase
      @Cuttothechase  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope. This car has pasm. One ride is super smooth and the other ride you feel everything.
      You do get used to both types whichever you have. Promise lol.

      Well after a 4/5 week delay I went ahead today and tried to effect the repair.... sadly failed miserably, I have what my late mother called shovels for hands and that grub screw is positioning on an angle and damn ny impossible to get at, my torxs screwdriver has a normal handle which no way fits into that tiny gap...... so I'm a bit scunnered because it has to either be loosed or taken out to do the repair ?
