I live in central WI and there is crime increasing almost monthly. It's the economy and lack of opportunity. I am moving to Wilmington (suburbs/not downtown) and I consider it a WONDERFUL town. Deal with it, there is crime everywhere. You need to be careful and cautious no matter where you live.
I lived there for over 10 years, loved every minute of it. Worked at UNC WONDERFUL, the best college in N.C.. Moved back to mountains to help take care of family. Miss Wilmington very much.
Usually people don't say that about Fox News. I command you sir for being honest. Because none of the news organizations give you real truth even the conservative ones. A personally stick to alternative media.
I’m born and raised in ilm and I have to say this is legit. I was also raised downtown and the only crappy part about having a fat gf or a moped is being seen with them
Silver Lake is a nice community still relatively affordable smaller and mid sized homes with a good pride of ownership vibe and pretty centrally located.
I suppose its all perspective.. I have lived in Los Angeles and San Diego and both these areas have much more dangerous neighborhoods and larger problem areas than Wilmington NC.
@Dougstang05 feel free to email me a bit of information what you are looking for and budget and I will point you in the right direction! Jake@MovingWilmington.com
Honestly what about Creekwood? It’s been revered as the absolute worst and I never see anything about it. I’ve in Wilmington for 10 years and am now raising a family an I would live anywhere close to downtown, Creekwood or love grove. Worth mentioning so people know where not to live in Wilmington..(there are more like by the hospital etc)
I think Wilmington is one of the safest places to live in the world , particularly the Wrightsville Beach and eastern and middle side of the county. Downtown and carolina Beach probably has the most crime in the county but relatively the whole Wilmington area probably has one of the lowest crime rates in the country. In general people of all backgrounds are friendly, and even the two noted areas with more crime still have a low crime rate compared to the whole country.
I grew up in some tough cities in the Northeast and lived in some amazing places all over the country during in my life. Yes, Wilmington is safe. Sure, there are some places you want to avoid and you should always be aware of your surroundings in any city (especially when alone or late at night). But, relatively speaking, even downtown is very safe in most places you would ever go - and as you get outside of town (i.e., Leland or toward W.B) - completely safe! and p.s. Jake - do yourself a favor - layoff the "politics"
Pretty accurate, I will say that violent crime here is targeted. It is either domestic or involves drug and gang activity. My area (east greenfield lake) is included in the high crime areas because of a public housing project at our northern edge over a mile north of us. Yet we are one of the safest neighborhoods in the city. One violent crime in 15 years. theft and burglary is the same as the suburbs. A house on the market here typically sells the first few day. Sunset Park to our west has really turned around in the past couple of years. Gone are the cheap rentals that brought in drug dealers and their customers. Lots of young families buying and remodeling the older homes there. Gentrification has been good for that neighborhood.
I would 100% agree with you regarding targeted violent crime. I believe the areas around Greenfield Lake and to the north of your neighborhood will be an area of gentrification and pricing increases very soon kind of similar to Carolina Place. You have the Amphitheater, stadium and walking trails around the lake within 5 minutes of the historical downtown and the South Front area whats not to like about that?
It's still raggedy over there and they building a food bank over there when they need to be putting more affordable housing over there cause they suck on resources and it's not Alot of help here.. but alot of children gone missing and still are missing and nobody is focused on that. All the needles laying around in parking lot and exc
Wilmington is safe w the exception of specified areas and can tell you exactly where the majority of those areas are. Between 5th and 17th From Nixon to Greenfield and even some of those areas aren't so bad ..on the Northside-- I would say extend that to between 4th and McRae between Bladen and Nixon although that area on 4th is better (gentrifying)...it would be a lot to type to narrow it down to each street...but that would cover all the bad......Princess Place from 30th to Market and the neighborhoods/streets on each side of Princess from Market all the way to the back of opposite sie of Princess Place...Long Leaf Park and Market St North Apts.....also campus Edge Apts can be dicey ...they started going downhill when they tore the projects down Taylor Homes and Nesbitt. Also greentree apts is dicey
That's correct Wilmington is calmer than it was in the early 2000s they gentrified most of the rough neighborhoods in that town being realistic it's still shootings going on there but it still doesn't compare to 2000-20005 time frame at all
I moved out of historic Wilmington on February 1 2021 because three years was enough of the noise pollution I grew so tired of . Yes Wilmington is beautiful and has nice night life and a scenic riverfront . I would not call it a very safe place to live however . I would say for it's size that it's more of a middleweight town on the crime scale . It really depends on what area you are looking at as to how safe it may be . One thing that grows very irritating about the heart of historic downtown is the high level of noise from sirens of both fire and police day and night . Once I relocated to Chapel Hill I was relieved to be in a much quieter town . Another drawback to living in Wilmington is that it rains too much as well . I recommend a visit or a weekend stay for everyone in Wilmington but I would not ever advise anyone to relocate there . I have a friend and his wife who bought a home there years ago who expressed his regrets to me about living there now . He reflects the opinion of many others I know who speak of leaving historic Wilmington. Wilmington is without question the most gay town I've ever experienced as far as the males . If you like loose morals and lots of noise from sirens and plenty of rain then move right in . Wilmington is also overloaded with homeless people as well. I think Chapel Hill is better on all accounts than Wilmington is . 25 years ago I would told anyone and everyone to move to historic Wilmington. Now I would not recommend it for anything but a weekend visit .
Jeff, I believe if you google the annual rainfall in Chapel Hill it is almost exactly the same as Wilmington, a little confused what you are talking about in that regard? From what you wrote it sounds like you lived in the historic downtown, which i mention is where the majority of crime issues are, as is the case with most cities, it would also stand to reason living downtown might also be noisy. Im not even going to comment on your statement about gay people. You seem like you are much happy in the area you are now so congratulations.
Say what? Wow...Wilmington is a great place to live. Just check the list of celebrities that live on Figure Eight Island. The Riverwalk Downtown is top notch. The city is relatively safe. You want to see what a neighborhood with crime looks like, come to Philly. Clueless...You will hear a lot more than sirens. Even the college students get robbed, on the regular. Whether, your at Temple, Penn etc. Wilmington is absolutely an outstanding place to live. Warm climate with very mild winters. Leland is still up and coming. I think as it grows, the schools will improve. Overall, great bedroom community next to the city.
Hey Jay! Great content. I am moving down there, and doing some redcon this week. What small towns would you recommend in the vicinity of Wilmington for a early 40s single professional? Any thoughts would be great.
Honestly your age & single I would want to stay in Wilmington proper or possibly Carolina Beach. Hampstead is kind of young families and not a ton to do besides the beach and Leland /Belville is gearing more toward retirement aged demographic. Send me a bit of info if you would like about what you would want as far as a community and I can send you a few areas. Check out Dockside while you are here during the day and maybe check out Carolina Place for neighborhoods. Jake@movingwilmington.com
Down town is wonderful for a social life if you can afford it but Hampstead I think is a good place to own a bigger piece of property and still be able to get to town. I think the bypass they are building will get you there quick but the traffic does get backed up sometimes. Hopefully they are getting that fixed. Leland will probably be a good investment but I wouldn't want to live their. If you are from up north, I think all of the new areas are designed for the taste of the northerners and you will have plenty of them in those new developments like you find in Leland. You ever heard of a roundabout in the road? If you have, then you will feel right at home their.
One advice to you is leave politics to yourself, don’t bring it to the videos. Also, that’s why locals are against the people that move from California and New York. Keep your leftists’ propaganda to yourself.
I don't feel that saying that most main stream news channels have a bias, is talking politics. I could have just as easily said the same thing about CNN.

Its still a little rough but you can with the recent additions it is on the cusp to being an up and coming neighborhood in the near future.
