- Chris Martin (Coldplay) replaced Bono (U2) on December 1, 2014, during the World AIDS Day (RED) concert at Times Square, New York, because Bono from U2 had a bicycle accident. Chris Martin performed, among other songs, the beautiful U2 track "With or Without You.

Wow that was amazing , I had not realised Chris Martin had done that until today . I know that U2 and Coldplay respect each other massively but to stand in Bono's shoes is a great honour and very flattering and to be honest I do not know anyone else who could perform that as well as Bono , except Chris Martin yet again a big enjoyable suprise , a gift . I am so pleased I got to live in an era of both U2 and Coldplay 😊🙏🕊️🏴

Respect to Chris Martin…..many people have learned the hard way not to attempt this track at Karaoke or in a covers band. Bono is a powerful singer with an exceptional range…..mind you Chris has an amazing falsetto.

This proves to me that 50% of what makes Coldplay songs feel the way they do is because of Chris' voice!
This was a not so great performance Chris doesn’t have a wide vocal range
But to your point I think any band that is well known owes about 50% of its success to the voice of the lead singer But only because it’s hard to imagine them with a different voice Not because every lead singer is the greatest singer in the world
If Coldplay had started with someone else and become popular And let’s say Chris Martin had done a solo career No one would be saying “hey if you replaced Coldplay’s lead with Chris Martin it would be so much better”

I love Coldplay but I don’t think Chris has the greatest voice I think it’s one of the weaker parts of the band honestly Now his songwriting is great if a bit simplistic There songs don’t typically have many lyrics that aren’t repeated many times And they aren’t especially deep
@@WdawgSmith I wasn't talking about Coldplay's success. I meant to say that only by replacing Bono with Chris their song sounded and felt like a Coldplay song to me. Chester Bennington also performed for and with other bands and covered a few songs but they didn't felt like LP songs to me, although LP is my #1 favorite band.
And that's a huge problem because the rest of the band are insanely talented but Chris insists on doing almost everything. Coldplay is like Chris Martin's solo project in which the other members vote on which songs will stay on the record, but very rarely shine on their own nowadays.
Gone are the days when you could feel and listen every single instrument being played. Now is all MAX Martin going apesh 1 it on the production. When you leave the organic elements of the band out, then it actually becomes Chris Martin and friends: the band.
Did you know their drummer is an even better vocalist?
Their bassist is literally one of the best, most melodically outstanding bassist of modern brit pop/alt rock.
And their guitarist is on a U2 level of atmospheric wizardry.
But Coldplay is mainly Chris Martin....

This makes perfectly sense - early Coldplay definitively got inspiration from 80's U2 (no virtuous guitar solos but cool riffs and some baselines of Adam). Even the trajectory of the bands is similar, from rock to more pop.

While Chirs's voice doesn't hit quite as hard as Bono's, he does a fine job here. I was kind'a expecting his voice to be more powerful, and he can definitely hit those notes when he is at his best, but here he may be having a so-and-so day as even the best ones do sometimes...
Chris is not a tenor like Bono. He can't reach the ranges the Bono does naturally. I loved it.
Chris' voice range is far more limited. In fact, he has an average voice, ok for the songs he sings. Don't ask for more
@@paulacravello If Bono tried to sing one of Coldplay's songs he would run into the same problem. It's one thing to sing your own songs and another to sing someone else's, no matter how great your voice might be.

All worries were put to bed upon the first time he sang
I remember this. When the human race collectively ended aids in time square. Aids didn’t stand a chance. It was like “ah no the humans have mobilised run” but it couldnt escape and everyone just pounded aids to death. The issue was in doing so it got in open wounds and orifices and started aids again. Really we learned a lot that day

Give Chris a break! I thought he was better than just 👍 at covering Bono’s song. I doubt he even had much time to rehearse, being a fill in. Saw Coldplay live a few years ago which was a terrific concert imh 70ish y.o. opinion. I also think Bono’s voice is still going strong at his current age.
