Viral mutation and evolution

  • Viral evolution
    adenine, cytosine, uracil, guanine
    Darwinian evolution
    Species undergo random mutation
    Making most less fit
But making a few more fit
    Fit means compete, survive, reproduce
Natural selection will ‘select’ the more fit
Viruses usually become less virulent over time
    Increased virulence / transmissibility
    Mutations that increase transmissibility
    Mutations that can avoid antibodies
Mutations that can avoid vaccination defences

Think of each of us as a Petri dish. The more Petri dishes exposed to the virus, the more opportunities there are for genetic mutation. If fewer Petri dishes are exposed, there are fewer total viruses in existence, less replication, and therefore fewer mutations will arise. This is how social distancing, mask wearing, and lockdowns prevent mutations-there are fewer Petri dishes exposed to the virus.

Hi DJ, nice talk on viral biology. Just to be clear, high transmission/infection = higher virulence probability.
In the lab if you want to up viral virulence, you speed up the certainty of viral transmission.
When a virus has certain transmission, virulence goes up - eg, it has no need to worry about killing the host.
So in a viral pandemic it is worth keeping the number of infections down, to slow transmission, in order to lessen the risk of more virulent strains evolving.

If I am understanding this, the variants may be an asymptomatic presence in a vaccinated person, who will then transmit this new variant to others. So, even tho we are vaccinated, we are still at risk for contracting the new variants with, perhaps, a milder case. But, more importantly, we can be super spreaders of the new variants???? Is this correct? So my relief at being fully vaccinated and not a significant danger to others....well....that is dashed completely?

Yes and at least one eminent scientist has warned the WHO about the possible dire consequences of that so they can't say they were not warned anf therefore should be held to account!
Mass Vaccination in a Pandemic - Benefits versus Risks: Interview with Geert Vanden Bossche PhD, who is an internationally recognised vaccine developer, virologist, having worked as the head of the Vaccine Development Office at the German Centre for Infection Research. Coordinated Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation’s , He believes he is now morally obligated to put his professional reputation on the line to get this scientific information out to the public, and has sent an open letter to the World Health Organisation highlighting the dangerous principle of mass using of a prophylactic vaccine that does not 100% eliminate infection and transmission in the recipient whist still in the midst of a pandemic which is highly likely to create super vaccine resistant variants in the process .
