    I've had Echinacea tea before. A unique flavor with definite floral overtones. Dandelion Root tea is also a healthy indulgence. Thanks for sharing this, Jade.

    When the Greeks finally left what is now Italy, they took the letter K with them! We now have to use CC or CH to get a hard K sound.

    we have the same word in Slovak, spelled the exact same way however pronounced completely different.
    E (like Ellen)
    CH ( a "kh" sound non existing in Eglish, the harsh sound as if you choked - exists also in Hebrew or Arabic)
    I (like y at the end of the word easy)
    NA (with a as in Africa)
    CE ( tse or tze with E as in Ellen)
    A (again A as in Africa)
    Weird how many languages have exactly the same word, spelled the same way but completelly different pronounciation. If I didn't see the spelling and heard an English speaker, I'd have no idea he/she is saying echinacea.

    Such lean words are very tough for non-native English learners. The spelling is the same, but the pronunciation is often very different. Even the stressed syllable changes. In German, we say [ɛçinaˈtseːa]. The [ç] quite special in German. It is when you say [ʃ] but then slightly pull back and lift the tongue (and separate the teeth).

      I shared that reaction- per my earlier comment, I doubt I did encounter this word as a kid because that was the 70s and 80s and relatively fewer herbal remedies were universally being discussed. By the 2000s, everybody and his cousin was taking and talking about echinacea, so I heard it many, many timed before seeing it written.

    • @JadeJoddle
      @JadeJoddle  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      People who are into herbal remedies and gardeners are likely to be familiar with this word already. For English learners and most kids learning to read, it will pose a challenge.

    I don’t know if it’s just regional, but the Greeks I know don’t pronounce the CH as K, it actually is more of a H sound, like a scratch at the back of your throat, or a cat coughing up hairs.

    That's just how you pronounce it in English. But it's not an English word. I pronounce the ch as the Dutch G or a Hebrew Chet.

  • @randomobserver8168
    @randomobserver8168 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    If I had seen this word as a little kid, applying generic English rules, I would have assumed the ch was pronounced tch, as in itch. Later, having been introduced to gutturals from ancestral Scots slang in the family, I would have assumed it was a guttural. Always I would have assumed the final c was soft but fully pronounced as s and not sh. So there you go. Etchinasea. Or maybe Eh[choking guttural noise]asea.
