I had the same problem with my 2005 E46 M3 SMG. The car will not start after a short trip and the shifter will lock up in neutral or in first gear. After the car cooled off or letting it sit overnight, the car will start and drive like if nothing was wrong. Changing the relay worked when the problem first started, but it eventually got to the point where I had to get the car serviced. The problem was the hydrolic pressure pump. It is a pricey part, plus labor. I also changed the clutch since it was cooked. The car ran like brand new after the work was done. The shifts were crisp and the car had new life in it. The SMG is brilliant but can be a mine field. A friend of mine had an E46 M3 which developed some SMG issues. Dropping out of or not selecting gears. Dropped it into BMW who proceeded to throw parts at it including a pump, control module, gear ID selector switch and a clutch. None of it fixed it. They’re prone to snapping on SMG but last much longer on a manual. €40 for 2 springs and the car worked perfectly. BMW gave him a discount on all parts and labour. Lucky for me as I had the same issue a year later, swapped the 2 springs and was sorted. Don’t know if the SMG 3 has similar but check it.

Really common failure on the SMGIII. Sometimes you can just get away with replacing the electric motor in the pump (about $200) and not the whole pump assembly. While you’ve got the box out, I would recommend also replacing the SMG hydraulic pressure sensor, as these can also go bad causing a red cog of death, and are a box-out fit.

Not an expert but please try a brand new battery. It might help since the electronics are sensitive and require certain voltages to properly operate. Good luck
If the battery is putting out 12.6 volts he should be good. But!!! It needs to be tested under load. I have been the victim of a gone dead battery while driving and the whole car felt like it was going to implode before it just stopped altogether. But when I metered it, the voltage was good! On my 4th battery now since 2009 (I don't drive it enough and can't put a battery tender on it where it's parked).

@@HalfAssBuilt I am super tempted dude! I currently have a work truck, so the M5 would only be a weekend car, but I can only find one v10 within a 100-mile radious from my house and it's an M6 Convertible. I really want the M5, love 4-door sports cars! Thanks for the advice too! Do you own one?
@Scary AF Entertainment I live in Cali so they are plentiful over here I have a e63 m6 that I track and a e60 m5 that has 227k miles on it. As long as you do the preventative you're solid on these cars maybe a hiccup here and there
Yep. Happen to me. After a year of ownership my smg pump and coil packs went out and had to get a re-man. Good is since I got it fix I hadn't had any issues, and the car runs like a dream! Despite the momentarily set back I have no regrets owning my e63 m6. The sound and drive more than make up for it. You'll see 😊
Man, the interior of that thing is beautiful. My 335i looks like an antique compared to that. Its also really amazing how awesome it drove home. Then it decides to take a sh%t? That is an amazing coincidence. What the hell could have happened between those times to cause it to take a dump? The seller must have known you'd be able to get home but knew it was crap or he wouldn't have been selling it. Something is UP!!!
Has one before , probably the issue with smg is flywheel with clutch , they say they switch smg pump but still check on that too !
A pregnant couple sold me a mint e90 335xi w/a "clean title" for $11k that was actually a total loss rebuilt from another state.... & the turbos took a shit the 1st week. Ended up putting 6-7k in maintenance & replacing turbos...Close to $20k total. Sold the car in December of 2021 for $4900 because I couldn't afford to replace the valve cover & invested it all into btc.... & a week later, the market crashed..I basically gave away $20k & never even got to drive the car outta town. Epic living nightmare. My life story. Never fall for the "baby on the way" scheme
Oh dude! The valve cover you could have done yourself :( Turbos I bought for $1300 for both (Vargas), $1500 Labor to install. Valve cover $60. Gasket $18. Very easy to do. I've done mine 4 times (once for practice).
Finally, I have been waiting for so long for the e60 m5.
Congrats bro, can’t wait for the amazing content that will follows.
Had a friend who bought this same model M5 that was at a salvage auction as a vandalism case. Bought it and did the rod bearings and pretty much rebuilt it before anything broke more. And now the car is better than ever!
Car Def needs an SMG Pump motor. Also your gonna need ISTA for this car, regular scan tools don't work too well with it.
100% true
Check the ground from the engine to the body, and also the wiring for the gearbox behind the engine! Very nice car, Love Bmw V10 M5!!!
car sounds amazing and it gets up there in the revs pretty quick.. deserves to be kept going
Bmw tech here I know these cars very well the SMG pump and wire harness need to be replaced manual swap on the frist generation is very easy..
I came close to buying one of these in 2008/9 instead I went for a one year old alpin white e92 M3. The confidence of factory warranty Vs no factory warranty for the older M5 was just too big a factor. I still hanker after a V10 though. Passion project all the way. Good luck.
Take it apart, forged pistons, (OEM ones will crack with abuse) lighter rods, WPC treated the crank and bearings, Cryo treat the Vanos pump and WPC treat, 6 speed swap it, it'll be bullet proof.
The moment I would see those Falken tires on a M5 I already would start running
I had a 2010 m sport e60 535i and it was such an amazing car. It had better handling in the corners than my non m sport e90 335.
You forgot to take notice that SMG means "SEVEN MORE GRAND" 😂😂😂
“Several/Seven More Grand” for mods, if your have a 6MT 😂😅😊
that trans should be a smg 3. If you can get it in gear again try to calibrate the smg, the last thing is the harness for the smg pump are known to fail, but you have to take out the trans to inspect it properly.
As an ex n54 owner that bmw chime gives me chills every. Single. Time.
I’m having nightmares about my past ownership of a E63 M6 …that smg transmission is a total turd 💩…luckily mine went out second day of ownership and BMW replaced the clutch and whole smg computer assembly 😮 Well on the bright side the M5 smg will be a content monster 👹
😂 yes total trash he made a big mistake but I guess it’s good for content 🎉
Misdiagnosis is the most expensive thing in the E60 M5. Chances are the SMG TCM wasn't the problem
@@Karanjy the most expensive thing is buying a BMW with a POS smg transmission …that is a massive mistake for any common person it only makes sense here because he will use it for content
This sums up my BMW ownership in a nutshell 😂
“Man this car is sick!!”
“Oh fuck, what does that mean?!? How do I fix that?”
“Man now that this car is fixed, it’s badass. I love BMWs!”
“Fucking A, it’s broken again, this thing is the biggest piece of shit in the world 🤬”
I bought a 2008 with 40 K that had a bunch of work and mods done to it. Twin G power superchargers exhaust carbon fiber hood and the list goes on and on. At 71,000 miles the SMG gave out. Sold it cheap to a BMW tuning shop.
E60 M5 with manual would be a dream. Lci conversion wouldn't be too bad choice either.
Hopefully he can get this lucky. Don't you think that seller knew it was a paperweight but that the buyer could at least get it home?
@@TheFrenchPug indeed!
That said, the electric motor is the common failure point, but in typical BMW diagnosis hell, most techs replace the whole pump assembly
for that spark plug stg a wood screw, mechanics wire, and something to pry with i comes out like butter+ a little pb sometimes lmao we got the same thing on our shops m5
For the SMG transmission I think there is A kit to convert it to manual so you will have less problems moving forward.
Makes me feel a little bit better about my n54 problems😂 .. but seriously, I can’t wait to see this thing running right. I will now go and purchase some Red Bull thanks swap depot
What do you have going on? I just got mine back into New running condition. It's a 2009.
I moved from an S85 M6 to an N54 1M, and honestly the N54 is nothing to maintain after coming from that V10.
Now that said, when my N54 pops I’ll most likely be swapping it for an S85.
I like the punishment
@@TheFrenchPug I have an ‘07 6mt E92. I’ve done some basic maintenance including cam ledges and seals currently replaced all sensors including o2’s. Recently ordered all gaskets, head bolts, pan bolts, bearings and valve seals, etc. Waiting to order some Manley rods and pistons since my head gasket has begun to slowly leak on the intake side and will be replaced. All of this within the past month
I am very anxious to see the development of this video.. I know you will turn this car brand new and she will put a smile on your face when you drive it an hundred per cent… can wait to see it… don’t give up on the car 👍👍👍👍🏎️🏎️🏎️🏎️
Dang, everyone lies when selling something.
You can do it! Look at M539 Restorations his M5 came out really nice.
I have a 2007 530i and had to get it into neutral once without starting the car. Not sure if the M5 will have this, but I found out that underneath the gear lever shroud is a hole you can stick a long screwdriver into and lever it forward. This puts it into neutral mechanically.
Finally bro!!! Goodluck though 😬
That jet auto sales paper in the center console explains the motor being resealed. It’s a GA dealership
Beautiful BMWs I will never buy one all my cuzzins had BMWS Literally All I Was The Only One But Honestly They Never Took care of them either but when I watch you I kno I can take care of it but for that reason I’m out but love watching how they be with no issues and actual maintenance 👨🔧 ❤💯
I've daily driven my m6 for 7 years lol never had an issue besides changing the clutch once and one throttle body actuator. 200,000km on the dash red lining every gear. The amount of abuse I put it through i doubt any other car could endure with that minimal wear.
Yours wasnt an auto though which explains a lot.
@@ThecultofCon you clearly don't know much about cars lol.. it's an automated manual SMG it has a clutch.
@@moegamezzz3622 Automated manual? Do you ever stop to read things you are writing? Automated manual? That's an oxymoron. Your transmission is either auto or manual it cannot be both, therefore you are driving a cuck stick disguised as a manual. Designs like this only exist because losers who dont know how to drive stick have been getting shit on for decades and BMW is only catering to cucks by telling yall that your auto trans is somehow manual. Its not.
This is going to be a fun car to watch you make content on!
That's what's ups Jacksonville the city!!
That BMW alert ding sound really gave me PTSD😢 . After 5 BMWs I will never have another. But they are so damn beautiful and drive amazing! I swear it's all about Those few and in-between days when they're driving perfect and u and the BMW are 1. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR DOING THIS E60 VIDEO IT REALLY BROUGHT BACK SOME GREAT MEMORIES OF BETTER TIMES.
That e60 is very nice, I think one of my neighbors is keeping one tucked away in his garage. Today I saw an e39 M5 on the highway and remembered who's king. The e34 is special as well.
This isn’t what we want wanted Cristian, it’s what we needed 💪🏽 it’s giving me og 335i vibes Forsure
Had that same issue until I replaced the smg pum on mine that fix that problem
How much did it set you back?
The BMW warning chime just brings back trauma of things I would need to fix 😂
That V10 sound is absolutely gorgeous!!
I talked to the seller of this car back in January. Passed on it when he dropped the price by 5k to try and offload it.
He knew what was up. I'm shocked it was able to drive the 2 hours drive home problem free.
You guys got enough bmws’, just buy a laptop with ista installed on it, Carly ain’t gonna cut it for the e60.
VV on the e60 plateform? Boy i was waiting for this day
The Memories! I too had a clapped out E60 2007 LCI update well it was a 530i so yours definitely wins! but the same color and the same amazing wheel paint job too love previous "owners"
I owned 2 M5 E60, both SMG. If i lived in USA i would buy the manual one. The engine is great, the only problem for me is the SMG. I wonder why the DCT m3 e90 can´t be swap fairly easy. Keep walking! great video!
We have a similar story lol, i always had wanted one myself, so I picked up an 06 with 76k but the time it hit 82k the smg blew up clutch and all and when it went it locked up causing the engine to suddenly stop which took out the main oil pump.. long story short 6 months into ownership I had $15k worth of repairs on top of buying the car, turned out to be the worst vehicle decision I’ve ever made (by a long shot) bless anyone who decides to buy one of these cars
Just make sure the SMG system is properly full of smg fluid. If its empty then it will give you all thesw types of issues your having mow
Can we stop pretending that this is a surprise??? You know exactly what you’re getting into with an E60 so we dont have to go through the song and dance of “😮😮😮 I thought this super cheap, 17 year old supercar was going to last forever, where are all of these problems coming from and why is it so EXPENSIVE 😭😭😭 why is everything broken???”
I also bought a e60 m5 couple months back 2008 with 85,000 mile I love that damn car so much after a week the SMG pump is fucked
The options u mentioned are only for the 2006+ model year
I have a BMW i found a lot of people forget to address a low battery/or old battery these cars have to have a battery operated at optimum level
I cannot wait to see this, I want a e6x m5 m6 but I’m too scared. I’d love to see what it’s actually like to own one
I own a 6 speed swapped e60 and I can tell you - no matter what a SMG e60 says, it’s never a “small thing”
Seeing you guys that newly bought old e60 was nerve racking was hoping you guys would make it home
sounds like the ECU is having memory corruption? id send the ECU in and make your own harness / pull the one you got and inspect it
Try replacing the battery, the E9x throws trans codes when the battery is old
Please do a lci conversion, the e60 lci just looks so much nicer. Lci Taillights, headlights and the door panels and the car is a 10/10
I have one you can remove that ligth with a reset.
1.Turn off car
2.Turn the car into ACC
3. Press the gas pedal for 15 seconds and leave it press.
4. The ligth of the gear will go off and then turn the car on and drive normally.
Definitely watching this series
Did you check the earth strap? When they get old and crusty the lecreics start failing
The tinted taillights and the bmw door lights tells me all I need to know about the previous owner
And the M5 window decals.
Manual or DCT conversion ...
The S85 engines thirst for maintenance, is one thing, the hydraulic system on the SMG, is an entirely other evil animal ☠️!
Lord those and the E46 M3 SMG were my nightmare at the dealer I used to work at.
"Mechatronics", y'all about to become fluent in it! Lol
This car could legit, be a separate channel for you bro. ☠️
Tear that whole car down, and rebuild everything!
Wow!!! That just made me take a big gulp and it's not even mine. So the dude unloaded it on him.
E9x dct or manual swap?!
My brother had a 08 E60 M5… they are common for the transmission issues… he replaced both the engine and transmission and problems didn’t stop 🤣 but it’s a great car for it’s power
The black OEM wheels look great on this color.
Finally. I was hoping you would own an E60. Can't wait for this content.. I know you will make this car a dream car
The factory smg main wiring was horrible. I threw out that crap, replaced them and soldered some new wiring with lower gauge and thicker insulation... Problem solved. I rebuilt my S85 last year using upgraded Mahle rings, King racing main bearings with higher oil flow, ACL race series rod bearings. Everything else on the engine is stock.
oh boy, Im 25k into mines. you will definitely going to have a lot of content.. its never ending
Yeowch!!! I guess guys are not kidding when they say how much they've dumped into these cars.
The active bolsters were an option. My '06 has them. But this car is an absolute love/hate relationship lol
I had an 08 that I just ended up selling recently. I miss that car so much but god I don’t miss having to worry about the car being broke every time I start it up lol. Best of luck with yours!
Sucks. Thank you 💪🏼
Man this is better/interesting content. Wanna see this getting improved and more reliable with moree powerr
Red flag 1: Jacksonville Florida 2: SMG. Hoping manual is the way you go 👀 SMG is just nightmares waiting to happen. A gated 6 speed would be sick!
YESSS THE LEGENDARY E60
Suicidal decision to create content for us 👌✨
