I have an E60 M5, but mine is manual so I didn't have any SMG issues.
When I bought it (at 89k miles), it had a CEL for Throttle Actuators which I replaced immediately. It also needed front brake rotors and upper control arms.
I did those and then drove it home 1000 miles with zero issues.
After I got home, I took it to get the road bearings, vanos line, and spark plugs done. Glad I did the bearings because despite a Blackstone analysis showing no concerns, the half of the bearings had a significant amount of copper. I also had to replace half of my coil packs as they the plastic part gets brittle and cracks, and unfortunately breaks apart when doing the spark plugs.
I have since driven the car 7000 miles of mostly spirited driving and road trips, and have had zero issues with the car. Let it warm up and change the oil, take care of it and it will be fine. Best of luck with it; these cars are sensational to drive and the "M" button really gives you two cars in one!

Really common failure on the SMGIII. Sometimes you can just get away with replacing the electric motor in the pump (about $200) and not the whole pump assembly.
While you’ve got the box out, I would recommend also replacing the SMG hydraulic pressure sensor, as these can also go bad causing a red cog of death, and are a box-out fit.

The guys who stay under 3k rpm until coolant AND oil are heated up (especially on turbos) are the ones who keep their cars. Dime a dozen. If you can't afford it new, or afford to buy it and secure an extended full coverage warranty then you simply can't afford it yet.
Best tip if you can't afford it yet, buy something super realiable and cheap. Cook your meals, don't go out drinking buy a bottle and save every penny for minmum a year and re-asses where you're at. You'll feel like you earned it and these problems will never be problems for you.

E60 M5 is extremely reliable car. I have 160,000 miles on mine. The guy who tried to diagnose the M5 doesn’t really know what he’s doing. First thing, he should’ve checked to see if there is pressure in the smg system. If there is no pressure the gear won’t move. In fact, smg pump can be rebuild. All you have to do is disassemble the smg pump motor and clean out the carbon build up. And maybe replace the carbon brushing and make sure the carbon brushing is not stuck in the holder. First of all, smg pump motor doesn’t cost $900. You can get a new one for about $400 from MLReng. You could use a probe tester to test the old smg pump on the bench, most of the time smg pumps can be repaired. Since this car is a 2006. It would not be a bad idea to replace all of the o-rings in the lower block and actuator block for solenoids. To replace the upper(actuator) block with o-rings with solenoids, the transmission will need to be removed from the car.

I have a feeling it's not major, or he wouldn't have been able to drive it home 2 hours away. The seller knew what to do to get him outta town.

E60 m5 is the most reliable car??? Dont lie to yourself 😂😂😂
Just because the whole diag process wasnt shown on video doesnt mean that i didnt check SMG pressure before trying anything else. And if you paid attention to the faults you would know that its not a pressure issue because most faults are related to VOLTAGE issues which is why ive tried everything voltage related before assuming that the pump is bad.
Yes im the guy that apparently dont know shit about SMGs
Weeeeird 🤔 how the car is fixed now and runs and drives fine……

@@SwapDepot where did I say e60 m5 is the most reliable. You’re making things up in your head. yea, e60 m5 is reliable car. It barely giving me any issue. Do you realize people who barely have issues with e60 m5 will not report it nor talk about it? It’s always the one who has problems with the car screaming and moaning about it online. Out of 11 years I owned the car, I only paid a total up to $2,500 to fix whatever is wrong with the car and put over 100,0000 miles on it excluding maintenance and gas. Again, you seems to missed my message. It’s definitely pressure issue because you mentioned the smg pump was the culprit. The only way for the car to build pressure is to have a working smg pump and the car is now working because you were throwing parts at it in attempts to fix the issue. I guarantee you don’t even need a new accumulator because e60 m5 smg accumulator has a extremely low failure rate. Having ista or inpa bmw software would’ve help you diagnose the car more effectively.

Do you realize I fixed my own cars which is why I only paid a total up to $2500 to fix whatever is wrong with my m5. Since you know it all I can’t be bother to comment anymore.

Put a new fully charged battery in it . With bmws the computers start to get glitchy as the battery gets older and looses optimal charge capacity. An old weak battery can set off a multitude of faults. No sense in throwing parts at it that will still show bad because the battery voltage isn't stable.
