    I worked in hifi retail in birmingham in the 1970's i worked with JBL and we sold many pairs of L100 speakers they were loud forward and in your face they really sang to you but my god they were good, nothing else we had in the store came even close to the JBL's from memory they were a bright sounding speaker just outstanding. No i could never afford a pair but that was 1970 maybe this time around lets talk to the bank.

    Классный звук, лёгкий, светлый, и в тоже время прекрасно отыгрывается весь частотный диапазон, сочетание лучшего в мире на мой взгляд транзисторного усилителя и одной из лучших акустик дали такой отличный результат.

    I bought a set of new in 1978 JBL 4311WX Control Monitors the professional version of the original JBL L100 and had the same size drivers. I still have then and they are still in perfect condition and always sounded incredible on every type of music I play on it in 2,000 parties in 42 years. Always great a real legendary speaker still popular today. The new L100 Classic is better and cost more but worth it.

    • @ThresholdZhor
      @ThresholdZhor 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't believe the new L-100 Classic are better than original L-100's....the Classics are made by harman and the Original were made by JBL,,never the same , but maybe you did not like the L-100 original very much because they use paper tweeter which do not sound so detailed,,,later in 1979 JBL produce the L-112 which has been the best JBL bookshelf to date,,,better than the L-100 Classics

    Those sourd absolutely amazing. I have one pair of JBL's. the indoor/outdoor Northridge series and I love them. I am a novice/intermediate audiophile. I just love good sounding speakers and these sound incredible to me. I wish I were rich and could afford to build an incredible sound system. I wanted to add, whoever and however this was recorded is outstanding, really gives the viewer a true sense of how the speakers must sound.

    Of course, any intelligent person would not base a buying decision based alone on a Video like this, but this was a REASONABLE approximation of how they might sound. With that said, I used to own a pair of the Original L100's and although the Bass was absolutely phenomenal in terms of tightness, roundness, depth, punch, speed, and dynamic-swing, unfortunately, because there was no real Crossover ( only Capacitors ?? ) , the top-end would tear your head off !! No matter what I did with the speaker Tone controls, I could never achieve that delicate balance between detail & no-sonic-fatigue and I ultimately sold them. HOWEVER, if the mostly very positive reviews Online and elsewhere are any indication, and JBL has addressed the issues I have mentioned, this may just be the last High-End Speaker I ever buy. I make a very good living selling Insurance and would much rather spend my money on Vintage European Sports Cars than over-rated Wilson's and many other over-hyped speakers in the High-End. Take care guys! -Dave in San Francisco ♫

      I have JBL studio 580 and I have to point the tweeters straight ahead and not right at my ear. JBL do have well controlled bass and I've come to love their concert sound.
      If I had your money and space, I would give these a try. They are on special at Crutchfield and it's killing my soul not to buy them. 😢

    Appreciate the limitations of TH-cam but I get the feeling the top end is a bit unsophisticated and would be tiring after a while. That being said I love the way the midrange and low end kind of bounces along. On this evidence the tweeter is the Achilles heel.

  • @leschwartz
    @leschwartz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    L100s are a good book shelf speaker, meaning that they need to radiate into 180 degrees, as if placed into a wall, they are not the ideal floor standing speaker. You can turn down the treble ... agree that the driver integration is not perfect, don't expect to get enough bass impact to make you really feel the music subconsciously. The older generations of JBL engineers were amazingly able to hear less than 1 db off in linearity over the full range, and they would tweek every aspect of the speaker design until they got it nearly perfectly linear over its full operating range. I don't have the impression that the newest generation of JBL design engineers have developed that level of skill. These speakers sound more like what I remember the better models of Japanese speakers tended to sound like decades ago in overall character, but a bit better in quality.

    • @leschwartz
      @leschwartz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mark Godfrey They were designed for the studio monitor market to replace the standard Altec 604 coaxial speakers which had a large market share in previous decades but which also had an annoying mid range peak which improvements in recording media exposed, so studio engineers wanted a flatter more accurate monitor, which is what the L100s were designed to be. Floor stands are sold to people who want to use them as floor standing speakers that does not mean they were designed and optimized to be floor standing speakers. The L100s sound good when placed into a wall and best when designed into the intersection of a vertical wall and ceiling in a monitoring position. They sound tubby and over modulated when attempting to reproduce bass on the floor, stand or no stand.

    After a long silence of 40 years, Again the Hi-fi stereo of 2 channels left and right, coming back to ""enlighten"" the mind and heart of every listeners. In the past 1970s and 1980s , The real enlightenment of global music was in every corner of the world, The true pure ""STEREO SOUND"". of two channels for both ears left and right. It was at that time between 1970 to 1990, The true pure stereo system has given an enlightment to the humans to listen and to get fast advancement in any type of work and technology.
    This sounds very good, will be much appreciated if the electric bass guitar notes must sound little more deeper and grounding or earth penetrated types.

    Listening to a live performance without electronic amplification is the only reference source I use. I avoid snake oil in a plastic bottle, no matter the hype. But there are a lot of deaf people with money who think the 'latest thing' equals "quality."

    • @PursuitPerfectSystem
      @PursuitPerfectSystem  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The main problem with that reference method is when you listen to recorded audio on a hifi system its totally different to live music because your listening to the microphone placement not your seated position in the venue and your in a completely different venue. That's my 2p worth :)

    Fist time seeing an actual decent presentation of this speak. (I have been looking forward to this as the originals are an important speak to own for me....lived them when new.)
    My impression? Levinsson stayed somewhat consistent with how they present forward and full (only with a much more smooth and precise modern driver design).
    Take? Still a large room party speak/much more capable and not as limited as the originals.
    Looking forward to an actual listen and comparison (to other fine “modern” speaks in this price range). A re-issue aspect still has some importance.....possibly.
    Thank you for keeping my interest alive with this great video.

    Hmmmmm not sure on them sound wise, as just I find the top end a tad overpowering on the L100's, and yes I've auditioned them with at least 10 high end amps and speaker set ups.
    I just always feel the treble somehow drowns out the admittedly excellent mid range and low end.
    Shame though! Because as a retro fan I absolutely ADORE the look of the L100's

    There is no replacement for a large woofer. I see so many smaller size cone wooofers. Even if they have multiple smaller woofers. Yes great mids but if you notice all the really high end speakers have large woofers. There is definitely something to be said for the older speakers with a large woofer 2 mids and a horn or decent sized tweeter. They can play low volume well rounded and they can play concert level. Everyone used to praise the ls50 kef so much but have you heard a Tanoy. So good

      You are kinda right they do a lot of good, but most big unit speakers also generally have problems fully integrating and playing music instead of sound effects.

      Real HIFI Help I can’t disagree with you. My personal issue was listening to many different genre’s of music. Like I am sure we all do. My resolution has been different set ups for different music. I have some Maggie’s that I really enjoy or listening to I think they have enough bass if setup correctly. I added some SVS subs but that was not a match at all. Sonically I found the SVS subs to slow to keep up with the Maggie’s and they were also to boomy, even with lots of tweaking the bass was just not at the same pace. I got some of the new REL subs. That was a great match. Still took lots of tweaking. I also enjoy hip hop and house/club music. The SVS subs are great for that setup. I think Manaus audiophiles would say it’s excessive bass but I feel it’s really complimentary to that genre of music. I found I have to have a completely different setup for home theater. This has become such an expensive hobby.

      Good points you are making!
      I think that on a lower budget system a pretty good 2 channel speaker would be good with some subs especially monitor audio top subs. But the problem with most subs even the better ones, is the processing where you hear the 2 channels speakers not fully integrate with the subs, just like in the big speaker setups or the speakers that have many drivers.
      I have personally tried almost everything on the market, and constantly find myself going for the really good speakers that only have 2 or maks 3 drivers. This has a tendency of giving a better timing and better natural focus. But also requires at least the jbl l100 classic type of quality to work right.
      It also has to be mentioned that the JBL and klipsh type of efficient speakers are all still relatively in the cheaper part of the market, meaning that the crossover and type of material that is used is relatively low class. But for the money they offer a lot.
      I think that if you want the best speaker for the price in the world it is either Vandersteen 1ci for the low budget in a small room close to the walls, or the jbl l100 classic, or audio solution figaro xxl, or Marten Bird design 1, or the absolute best: audio note an-e spe/he, which requires that they are close to back and sidewalls and that you have a top piece of gear.
      But yeah you can also see that info on my channel.
      I only in my older systems used subs, because of the negotiation that they create in the sound, meaning that I knew when they were in the system, that I would not be listening to top quality orchestrial tracks or other special kind of instrument music. They have a tendency of making the listener listen to more normal/mainstream/beat driven sound tracks like Rihanna/Drake type of music or mainstream rock like Nirvana and Metallica. They can't really reproduce a instrument so it sounds convincingly enough. But that is also reflected in the price.

      Real HIFI Help We seem to have the same taste in speakers. I actually have the JBl100’s. I love them but I had the the crossovers completely rebuilt. I purchased them from Kendrick Sound. Look up his TH-cam channel and what he does with JBL speakers. The enhancements he does to JBL speakers are unmatched. I waited 14 months for my speakers but it was well worth it. For budget speakers I am also a huge fan of Tannoy. I have the Tannoy Turnberry’s. They seem necessarily what I think budget speakers but for their price I haven’t found anything that competes with them. Also the AR-‘1 -3’s. Are older speakers but if u can find one in great condition. They reproduce classical music amazingly.

    • @RealHIFIHelp
      @RealHIFIHelp 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right, and I agree about Tannoy.
      It has to mentioned that around 8-10" bass/mid range single driver is perfect with a tweeter. (2 unit drivers) is perfect.
      As soon as you exceed 10" and have 3 or more drivers it normally gets a bit cheap the sound and out of control and too focused on the effect part of sound. (you only start hearing this when you own the gear, hifi show recordings are meant to not show that part) So in order to make this a reality with only 2 units and only max 10", you need a 25-50 square meter room and a speaker that is close to the back and side walls to create the illusion of having a good speaker.
      The Tannoy and jbl and a couple of other like the old ones you mentioned does most things really well.
      But is still is a bit on the forgiving/safe side, and only leans towards certain types of recordings.
      When I went away from the mentioned gear over to my an-e spe/he in a controlled room, it sounded so much more real in a natural flawed way that had everything you wanted in the sound. Tannoy sounds old/not fully integrated compared to my new speaker, and like it is trying to much. Plus the tannoy is a bit colored and slightly hifi, which you only get to find out once you own it for a while and have some pretty good equipment.
      There is also a slight overhang in the bass area, not really transisioning well on certain tracks.
      But yes Tannoy beats a lot of speakers, just like the JBL l100 and some few ATC speakers.
      I will also say that generally most speakers that are more than 1 meter away from the wall, plays a type of hifi priority of sound, that makes it impossible to really get to know it. Most speakers need to be relatively close to the back and side walls in order to sound natural, they standard of 1-3 meters at hifi shows creates a totally wrong impression of the speakers, leaning towards a very biased sound.

    Hi Terry, I have the JLB L100 classic at home and they seem to be quite difficult to drive. Tube amps or low power class A amps don't work with them at all. Even a 300W per channel class D amp is strugling to get this bass driver moving. I would be thankful if you could tell me, if Mark Levinson 5805 is able to drive those speakers? You heard this combination at the show. Were there any signs of the speakers being underpowered? I am thinking of buying the ML second hand, but there is little chance of me being able to audition it with L100 classic. Thank you! Marcin

    • @PursuitPerfectSystem
      @PursuitPerfectSystem  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't really answer this question properly I am sorry but if you want an amp that will really drive hard speakers well see if you can pick up a used Gryphon Diablo 300 I have just reviewed this amp and it drives speakers for bass like no other I have reviewed so far. It's beast but an awesome one

    • @marcinkantoch7176
      @marcinkantoch7176 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PursuitPerfectSystem Thank you Terry! I was thinking about Crown XLS, but those amps do an internal A/D and D/A conversion on input signal, as you can apply some DSP functions. They do the conversion regardless if you are using the DSP or not. It drastically reduces bandwith and ability to resolve finer details. I prefer to go the traditional class AB route. Gryphon Diablo 300 is a little bit too expensive for me, even on the used martek. Although I must say it looks like a dream amplifier and I envy you that you had the opportunity to live with one for some period of time! As a side question - I watched almost all of your videos :) and I remember that you reviewed ML 585 a while ago. How does it compare to Gryphon Diablo 300? :) Please keep up the good work! Thanks, Marcin

    • @marcinkantoch7176
      @marcinkantoch7176 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PursuitPerfectSystem I hope it is the amplifier. It may also be the speakers, but all the reviews say that JBL L100 Classic have tremendous bass control, impact and heft, so I am not sure why I am not getting it. I spotted that with higher power amps (150W/8ohm) I borrowed to try from my friends the control of the woofer gets better. Now I have a class A 30W/8ohms dual mono design, but it is not a good match for those speakers. The funny thing is that this amp has no problem with driving other speakers in my room, even monitors which have low sensitivity. Here it struggles, the bass is "one note", slow and not impactful at all. The room is not a factor as other speakers had good bass in the same room and I don't hear any obvious room resonances. I want to try a higher power amp to see if it helps. Mark Levinson 5805 would be in my budget used at around 3500 pounds. Thats why I asked about the show coverage you recorded, where this combination was playing. This combination seems to be a go to system when Harman is exhibiting L100 classic at shows. This amp is 130W/8Ohms and 210W/4ohms, so a moderate specification, but looking at the weight of it, it should have more than decent capability of controling the woofers. I will try to do everything to be able to audiotion it with L100 before making a decision. In the end if this amp won't be able to drive those spekaers properly, then maybe it is better to change the speakers :)
