      Tip: switch around the times and the titles to make the time stamps appear in the video itself!
      It needs to start at 0:00 though
      Great video!! Only halfway through but great insight so far

    Other characters were neglected: neglects to mention shirley...
    lmao Shirley was so neglected she had to start her own spin-off!

    It's genuinely so nice to hear someone break down Abed's character who is not just like "he's so quirky, and neurodivergent, but he's more than that!". Like duh, he's a human, he's supposed to have more depth lol keep up the good work!

    I honestly believe part of the reason Abed’s identity and character as a whole resonates so well with so many people is that he is not written to be fun and interesting *in spite of* his identity but rather with his identity. His character grows and changes without the show writers making it seem he had to grow *beyond* his identity. On a more personal note, it’s really enjoyable to see a character that is loved by and loved others even if he sometimes struggled to understand them.
    Completely unrelated I have watched community enough times to accidentally pick up some vocal tics from Abed and often find myself saying ‘cool cool cool’ 😂

    Thank you for this video! Abed is a big part of my self-acceptance journey (I feel like this is the case for a lot of Community fans), so it's nice to have a 26-minute video on how he's not only cool cool cool but also well-written.

    I have been thinking about your video on Britta for weeks! Such a good take. Excited for this whole series.

    Another great video! I've got to admit, I've always had a soft spot for Abed and have always felt he was some of the best representation on TV (and also eerily similar to me).
    can't wait to see the rest of your vids! Community is such an amazing show and holds such a special place in my heart.
    I do have to admit though, once you get through the first few characters here, you probably will run into some issues with coming up with enough content lmao... Annie/Shirley/Chang 'frankly haven't been well utilized since' season 1.

      Annie is plenty well utilized and Chang is so wildly variable that there's a lot to say though it may be hard to make a single coherent argument because he's so incoherent.

    this video was so well made and so thoughtful. you really went deep finding examples of different aspects of writing identity both good and bad, and even though three of your primary examples were people of color (Abed, live action mulan, and Finn from SW), the "identity" you discussed for each had nothing to do with their race, which would have been the easiest assumption to make. Really well done video!

    I think I might be a kind of the anti-abed, where I view everyone as people, and I view myself as a character.

    • @MrObsidian101
      @MrObsidian101  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@worthbygrades I see myself as both, sometimes I feel like a character in a show and sometimes i see the people around me as characters.

    I'm sorry, I can't get past that opening. I hate those chocolate bits in Cornetto. They're horrid, overpowering and hurt my teeth. Apparently I'm in the minority but at least there's one person out there who agrees 😭
    Anyway, I hope my undying love for Community will at least balance out your view of me.
    I very much enjoy your video essays on Abed and Britta, in spite of your opinions on Cornettos/lh

    Abed is nice but I hate how his autism is the cartoonish loud mouth robot that notices every detail in a room. I have autism and I just be quiet and not talk to people while I do not notice so much. I know the autistic character is basically a human robot but it comes off weird to me.

    • @Chalkster_
      @Chalkster_ หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well autism is a huge spectrum, you are not going to be exactly like abed, in media the ‘robot’ logical thinker character type is more commonly portrayed compared to maybe being more quiet and not being as verbal. It’s obviously a bit frustrating seeing it overdone but also it’s not like people who are autistic aren’t like that, many are and it just happens to be shown more often. Abed bases how he sees things through tv and movies, using character tropes to understand people. He talks flatly but he’s more than just a human robot

    • @ToplessTopics
      @ToplessTopics 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I understand, and as a fellow autistic who was incredibly shy and quiet growing up, I would also like more representation. However, who's to say that none of the shy, quiet characters already in so many pieces of media AREN'T autistic? It's like thinking someone can't be a "gay" character unless they're fulfilling every flamboyish stereotype and talking about how much they want to sleep with their same gender. If a show/movie is going to specifically make note of someone's identity that way (like the infamous Good Doctor) then that's one thing, but if the show isn't ABOUT that aspect of their identity, it just happens to be part of who they are as a character, then why do we need a shy, quiet character specifically labeled as "autistic" to believe they might be autistic?
