Summary:
This video essay was a character analysis of Abed Nadir. One of the main cast members of the American Sitcom series "Community". The main topic I focus on in this video is how TV shows Write Identity. I use Abed as a case study for how he is a perfect example of writing Identity in a story. As well as making a comparison of how other characters often fall into one of two major writing mistakes regarding identity. At first, I give a brief summary of Abed's History on the show and how he came to be at Greendale and where he ended up. I talk about "what is identity" in general and why it's a subjective part of ourselves. I then break down what Abed's Identity is in the show, and how it relates to how he was written, including his struggles and achievements. My first comparison in the video involves Mulan and Abed. I use Mulan to explain the first major pitfall when it comes to writing identity. I then spent time talking about how Abed was able to fix this mistake. My second comparison is between StarWars and Abed. I use Finn to explain how identity can be wasted. In the last part of the video, I talk about how Abed's Character was completed and fully utilized.

Intro: For today’s character analysis I will be talking about identity, showcasing why Abed is a near-perfect example of how I think this should be treated in the story. As well as making a comparison of why, unlike Abed, a lot of modern Characters critically fail in one of 2 ways when it comes to writing identity.
History:
Abed grew up as a Muslim American with his Polish mum and Palestinian dad who both came to America to live abroad. Abed’s mum left the family home when he was just 6. Leaving a crack in the family dynamic with Abed believing his father blamed him for his wife’s decision. At first, he was allowed to attend Greendale Community College by his dad but only with the provision of using that knowledge to take over the family falafel restaurant. Enrolling in his 20s, while there he meets and joins the study group.
What is Identity?
First and foremost, you may be thinking why does a video about identity, matter more if it’s about Abed Nadir, rather than any other character in Community like Annie, does she not also have an identity and does that identity not matter? And you're absolutely right. Identity is universal and it’s simply just a list of characteristics that make different labels people belong to. It is also inherently subjective, determining what identities matter more or less for each person has no basis beyond individual preference.
Abed's Identity.
From the very start of that episode, the most apparent trait of Abed’s identity was that he stood out as different from the others in a powerful way. with Jeff's comment, it was surmised and then confirmed that Abed did indeed have Asperger's syndrome. Although, with today’s advances it’s an outdated use of a diagnosis, so for clarity, Asperger’s syndrome is a neurodivergent autism spectrum disorder, characterized by difficulty communicating with other people and understand social cues, with a tendency to have an obsessive interest in a few specific topics.
A badge the size of a car:
Now, the first major pitfall of writing identity, I see as the most common over-correction in modern characters. Is when identity is overutilized, Its overused, overworked, given unnecessary attention. If the presence of one’s identity Is made to be the most important thing about them, we lose the sense of complexity that there is more to see beyond the surface.
Identity as nothing:
Now there isn’t one specific way to introduce identity, but let’s see how they did it with Abed and how I think they not only fixed this overcorrection but gave so much respect towards the character and actually the audience while doing it.
Identity as everything:
Abed’s identity was written perfectly because it managed to not only correct the 2-writing mistake we have discussed but go above and beyond to capture a unique and distinct character in the middle.

i disagree with ppl who insist that BoJack's "broken". He,like everyone, can get better both in the ways he treats others as well as in the means of his mentaI heaIth.
Not everybody can “get better” not everybody can change for the better. If you genuinely think that’s true than you wildly misunderstand life
@yagirl177 you saying this means you wildly understand the message of bojack horseman. everyone can change, "you have to keep working on it every day". that's told to us in the first season, that bojack needs to work on it. everyone can change, can overcome their problems and their past, they just have to work on it instead of stay put. if someone excepts their a bad person, theb they'll stay one. if someone works towards being good, they may become good. don't be such a cynic.
Watching this, I finally understand the mechanics of how broken I am.
Dude - teacher, relative, cousin, neighbour? None of them cared how Diane was treated, none of them helped me in the 90s, even when i literally openly complained about how my parents treat me

Oh, brittas in this ?
My friends and I used to ask ourselves who we thought we were represented by in this show. I was going through a lot (Still am) So I answered Bojack. But my friends came to my defense and said I was more of a Princess caroyln or a Diane. I think now I'm more of a Diane. Lost, but waiting to be found. Finding myself. I loved this video
Every single time i watch this show the ending makes me ball my eyes out.
@@tallulah9789 Same ❤️
this video was so well made and so thoughtful. you really went deep finding examples of different aspects of writing identity both good and bad, and even though three of your primary examples were people of color (Abed, live action mulan, and Finn from SW), the "identity" you discussed for each had nothing to do with their race, which would have been the easiest assumption to make. Really well done video!
how do you watch bojack multiple times its so depressing, i would only rewatch the paige sinclair scenes shes my favorite :)
Because it’s real. It shows real issues people go through with comical behavior in between. If your not emotionally mature enough to handle that then that’s fine
@ i watched it and liked the show, its just depressing so i wouldnt wanna rewatch it. id rather watch things that make me happier lol
Maybe it sounds silly, but this show helped me identify the things I need to work on about myself. I've realised that I am the Princess Carolyn of a lot of my relationships in that I feel the need to be helpful to people around me to feel like I have a purpose. For a lot of my life I've minimised my own feelings because I've thought (wrongly) that this is doing right by other people and that someone has to be the one to rise above whatever is going on and sort things out, even if it's at my own expense. Of course, this is not helpful as either I end up with a case of feelings exploding out at inappropriate times or in relationships that are based on the principle of me never voicing my own needs. I've found that now I'm aware of this and working to correct it I've set the precedent that I will always ultimately put myself on the back burner and park my needs somewhere off to the side, and that some of the relationships I have are only successful because I do this. This obviously isn't healthy. It's also not right to just agree with people to avoid conflict since this isn't exactly an honest way to deal with others. Watching PC constantly put out fires for BoJack hit way too close to home for me because I could see something similar to my own behaviour from the outside. I can see how relationships built on one way traffic are dishonest and unhealthy I guess, and I'm making more of an effort now to stop and think before I just agree to something. What's interesting to me is seeing how PC was also responsible for managing the feelings and wellbeing of a parent. This was also my experience and I can see how I also came to be someone who manages everyone around me to an extent; keeping them calm, not directly confronting them if I can help it and trying to fix problems before they happen. It's made me miserable if I'm honest, and I'm trying not to be that person anymore.
Subconsciously you attract the same people, people with trauma, autism, ADHD, ect, usually find one another. People with similar damage/traumas are no different. I have been diagnosed with cPTSD from a pretty messed up childhood. Regarding what you said about how the show makes you wonder "do I know someone this broken?" I kept thinking of myself and how I related to a lot of the things in the show, and to be honest I do wonder if I'll ever feel whole or what that even means. I have healthy coping mechanisms to manage it and I try to put good out into the world but there's a lot about me that seems unfixable. Self-sabotaging good things and mistrusting anyone that genuinely likes me is a major roadblock. Regulating emotions is basically impossible so I rely pretty heavily on nicotine to numb most things I can't handle.(I usually remove myself from the situation first) The show scares me in a lot of ways, it feels like a reminder that if I slip up with how I cope and manage then I'll end up in a similar situation as him.

Being kind isn't being immature. It's just something we learn and practice. Sometimes it comes more naturally and sometimes it doesn't
I wouldn't say "unequivocal" there is logic behind the thing you do whatever it is you do chances for failure. The more desperate the more bound you are to lose. Britta deserves her credit as a well written character with a determined aspiration and yet should be a textbook case of handling your environment with a natural compass. I think certainly we can learn from her development and open our perception in life as something like this "You made something; doesn't matter the end goal...you did it." (17:10)
I feel like BoJack’a fatal flaw was his belief that once he became happy, he’d stay happy. BoJack has plenty of happy moments across the series but happiness isn’t a constant, like every other emotion, it will come and go.
@@jaymightplay482 holy sh&$ thats such a good take on his flaw❤️
I genuinely felt that it was the opposite, more along the lines of he’s afraid to be happy because he knows it’ll end or he’ll screw it up. That’s why he’s so prone to self sabotage as well. You can even look at the time he was in rehab and was too afraid to leave.
18:40 I think the point of this scene is not that Mr. Peanutbutter can’t change, it’s that he’s actively trying to work on himself, but clearly still has a ways to go. It’s like training a dog, you can’t just expect them to learn new tricks immediately.
I don’t believe we, as the audience are meant to dislike Britta at all. I think the shift is from an unrelatable to relatable character. Her shift to seeing her as a caring but misguided do-gooder is a foil and opposite to Jeff’s intelligent lack of caring. We are meant to root for her to change Jeff and the others. I believe she is disliked by the group because she is pushing them. They look at her failures and point them out as a means to have a common enemy and push away attachment and growth. Attachment is easy for Britta and others kind of resent her ability to be pushed down and come back for more instead of shutting down or going away like some of them do.

PC’s sigh in her last clip says it all
Bro bro which one has stronger curse I'll say truth or dare how about you?
13:55 I rewatched this show several times and you got that one point wrong. Mr. Peanutbutter was definitely not more rich and famous than Bojack. They actually have this extremely subtle but brilliant dynamic where they both envy each other for different reasons. Bojack was a star of iconic sitcom in the 90s. His show was popular to the point where people are still recognizing him 20 years later because of it. With that popularity he must've been earning nearly million or more per episode towards the end. Mr. Peanutbutter on the other hand was casted to a knock off show that tried to capitalize on success of Horsing Around. Show turned out to be pretty successful but not quite as much so he earned less money as well. Mr. Peanutbutter envies Bojack that he is more famous (He manages to get the role in Secretariat that becomes massive hit and Philbert is also quite popular, while PB's projects are more modest, like being a host of that trivia show) and has more money (Bojack's house is clearly way more expensive than PB's), he can also see he is more insightful and intelligent (that is also sort of pointed out in that one episode of the trivia show) Bojack on the other hand really despises and envies PB for being genuinely happy (seems like a small thing but the show is literally about how depressed he is) and he also really wants Diane who is dating PB.
Britta is based as Hell
Destruction of miguel's universe Reason: Collider merging rewatch the destruction of Miguel's universe
I love Britta, she is the best ❤
not sure i totally agree about bojack. at least what i take from the show is that everybody is irreparably broken, even happy people like mr peanutbutter. i think bojacks story is a lot about acknowledging that brokenness and working through it and against it so it doesnt control your life and the pain you cause others. i think its about how different people respond to brokenness-of themselves, the world, or others. mr peanutbutter doesn't accept it and ignores it, bojack accepts it but still ignores it, diane accepts it and tries to fight it, princess carolyn fights it for everyone but herself, todd accepts it and doesn't ignore it, but doesn't fight it either. obviously they all change and grow and these responses differ from season to season, but i think bojack's biggest flaw is that he knows and understands his own brokenness but refuses to believe that despite it, he can put good into the world too. it doesn't erase his or anyones brokenness to try and heal, but it creates a better world for broken people to live in.
People didn’t like Britta? Oh wow, I always loved her. She always had such great lines and bits in the show.
I dont know I think Britta has its interesting moments but she became so Flanderized that it was pretty hard to take any message about her seriously , you pitied her constant bullying more than you indentified with her. Pierce had simillar problems but on the other hand he a had a PERFECT example about the value of failure an persevering trought it on the boat class episode, he showed that no matter how much he failed or for how long he did there was still value in trying and persevering , and to find a certain comfort in failing because its natural and its going to happen to anyone who tries anything new .That episode really showed me how great potentiall great Pierce's charachter could be
29:39 that was not the only good moment for him he was also happy when he was teaching acting/theater in university and was genuinely enjoying his time he even acknowledged that
Bojack’s fatal flaw is that he doesn’t want to change, he only wants to suddenly be better without actually improving himself. He wants to appear better because he wants people to like him. He doesn’t actually want to stop hurting people because that would require him actually admitting that he’s at fault for hurting people
I immediately fell in love with britta cuz of how failure she is And i relate how sucky she is Edit: i just finished watching yea i love britta
my real what
i don’t think bojack fatal flaw is that he’s broken. i think it’s that he’s so deeply hurt and paradoxically stuck in wanting to be saved and afraid of losing his toxic coping mechanism of being superficially loved. he struggles the entire time with his relationship of conditional love during performing and wanting to be unconditionally loved for who he is. his self esteem so low and he has this deep seeded fear that no one could ever love him that he’s become comfortable with that. it’s the only place he feels in control. whenever someone starts to make him feel differently, where he actually starts to build any self esteem, his past and present come together to self sabotage and he remains miserable. he’s so angry at how his life turned out and simultaneously resents his childhood for making him this way and himself for keeping him this way. what bojack needed was to stop running and actually accept how hurt he was and that he could change. he needed to confront himself in a positive way rather than critical, that’s why his relationships with diane and PC were so long lasting, they both helped him but he refused to look toward himself passed keeping himself afloat. this is his mindset, and it’s only when he’s actually in prison that he can even begin to work on it.
Mr peanutbutter is just a doggie after all I think alot of dogs would be like this if they could talk and everyfin
Alright, time for my annual defense of PB; I think it’s very easy to overly villainize Mr. Peanut Butter. He never does anything nearly as bad as Bojack, even excluding the worst Bojack has done. We know almost nothing about his life before Hollywoo, but what we do see is someone who really didn’t have a chance from the beginning. He knows nothing but positivity because when he was being raised he was never allowed to feel anything else. I cannot say it loud enough, but HIS BROTHER/ENTIRE FAMILY LIED TO HIM ABOUT MORTALITY ITSELF. He didn’t know that either of his parents died until being on the set of Philbert, never really knew HE and his loved ones would die. That is so fundamentally fucked up. He was never allowed to process grief or anger or loneliness in his childhood/developmental years, his whole life is about making other people happy. That is such a screwed up mindset and notice that no one until later seasons even acts like he CAN feel deeper emotions. He’s just Mr PB, he’s happy, what else is there? That’s why his anger and Fighting with Diane during the end of their marriage was so intense but never stuck, it’s probably one of the first times he’s properly experienced that emotion. His perspective of Sad Dog is viewed as very empty but plenty of people are openly happy and people pleasing but empty inside. Learning to be alone at the end is his greatest triumph, and he keeps helping with Bojack despite having every right to hate the man. His good intentions aren’t everything but they are a hugely important part of him combined with his issues.

I can see myself being friends with Peanutbutter. However he would be my good times only friendship. Any time something bothers me, I would not tell him, so as not to spoil the vibes. In the end, he would provide a fun shallow friendship that would be fondly remembered but never treasured. Those deep friendships are the kind that will stick around for a long time. They are with you during the good times and bad. You can confide in them however they will expect so much more from you. If they are going the extra mile, you have to too. They are ultimately worth the effort, but oh boy are they heavy going, with euphoric highs and crushing lows. However you are there through the extremes and everything in-between. Feel good only friendships may have the best fun, but when you down in the dumps, they will avoid you.
You shouldve mentioned pc's another fatal flaw that is, her lack of empathy. Which is never highlighted in the show. Thats why shes my least favorite out of the main cast.

i dont think thats very fair, she is arguably the most morally grey character in the show and its not that she has zero empathy, it is that she tends to dedicate everything to her career and sometimes whats right and what will advance her career dont align, which is where all of her more poor morals are displayed. However summerizing her as just someone with zero empathy is very blind to her character
Willem Dafoe's whole performance is everything arcane Jinx should have been (in Season 2 at least)
I am Bojack. I thought I could be Diane but I actually think I can’t. And that’s what scares me.

i dont think bojack’s problem is that hes broken, its that he never bothers to pick up his own pieces and put them back together, or do anything to be better and get better. and he always blames everyone else for everything and expects everyone else do fix him, when thats his own problem.
Truth or dare is a scary movie
this was beautifully made. thank you.
Her goofs are wholesome and she does things out of caring, she's a wonderful comfort character
IT FOLLOWS, SMILE, TRUTH OR DARE, have silimarities
This show is not subtle
Not subtle on what? the flaws?
@ there’s just no aspect of this show that is subtle. It hits you over the head with all of its themes repeatedly. I’m not saying it’s not good, just not subtle.
if parts weren't subtle, you wouldn't keep getting new things every time you rewatch it.
It’s main themes and jokes aren’t subtle (which is good because the amount of people who were trying to defend Bojack/ think he was a good person was kind of concerning) but the way they delivered them and the less obvious themes were pretty subtle. Like how Sarah Lynn was most likely sexually assaulted by her step father (she mentioned she knew what bear fur tasted like, made comments about how he was “being weird” and was a photographer, the funeral clothes), most of the clues were small, passing remarks which can easily be missed if you’re not paying attention. Also with Bojack’s idea of a peaceful life with Charlotte, his fictional daughter Harper looks like his mother Beatrice and is voice acted by Kristen Schaal who voices Sarah Lynn. At first watch it might just seem like a random thing but it’s also a clever way to both show that deep down, Bojack did probably sympathise with his mother and wanted to give her a better childhood and that he really did see Sarah Lynn as a daughter figure to the point where his imaginary daughter was similar to her. The show writers threw a brick saying “here’s the main themes, don’t get it twisted” to avoid any confusion but left some breadcrumbs for the people who were looking for deeper meanings.
The show is subtle is so many ways. You can’t make a straight forward video about bojack. The more you rewatch the more things you notice about a character or situation that you didn’t notice before.
