My tips Find the right pick I like 60mm. Enough bend but not too floppy. Find a picking technique you like. Downstrokes, alternating down and up, or just up strokes. I play 90% with upstrokes, which is weird. But it works for me. Carol Kane upstroke technique. When plucking with your fingers, be sure to keep your fingernails trimmed. And again Find the technique you like; alternate fingers, only index finger, thumbing up and down strokes, popping, etc. Again, I like the James Jamerson one finger technique, the hook. If the song is faster grab a pick. Last tip = play songs you like. So practicing is fun. Scales can be boring, but you gotta practice those as well. Playing songs you like will help you notice patterns that are the scales you practice.
@katdbass You made a great lesson. You explain everything very thorough. You need to make another video on the different picking, plucking techniques you can employ. I am going to be using that pinky trick you showed to get better stability by hooking that G string. Genius. Im using that! Thanks
My first time seeing you and I really like what you shared. Good tip about the pinky finger on the G string, the action of the bass, and taking small pieces of songs you like all were very helpful. Nice job. Thanks... from New York
Hi,just came across your channel.I'm a female bass player of 36 years and i generally don't find very much helpful bass material on youtube but a few seconds into your video i was hooked!❤️. Ive always been a finger player and could never use a pick as it felt awkward. The little hack you have with hooking the little finger for support has really helped and given me more 'pick confidence'. Even with having very small fingers this technique has made a real difference. Thank you.
Girl, what a great thing to hear! Both are super comfortable for me but I guess I just found ways of allowing that early on. I'm so happy this little hack worked!
@@katdbass i've avoided pick playing completely until now! Lol.The standard anchoring the right hand on the bridge just has never worked for me. I'll certainly be making my way through all your content now. I recently read an interview you did and your first line mirrored my own exactly.I love the bass guitar❤️. I'm as crazy about it now as i was when i was 14. And we share so many influences of the 70s. You have a fan here in the uk for sure.
Wow! I've only seen a very short clip of your video I look forward to checking out more videos and keep up the nice work. Have fun! It's a wonderful hobby and it takes you into this wonderful world creating your own music. Wonderful! God bless! 🎸🤗🙏✨
Wonderful video! So nice to hear you speak. I wish I was half as articulate as you. I usually have an attention span of around one minute and thirty seconds, but I watched the entire thing and it was chock full of great advice.❤
Hi Troy, always a pleasure reading your comments. You made me laugh at the attention span thing. That's very sweet of you, I appreciate you taking the time. You know I admire you a whole lot. ☺
Very nice channel. It's obvious that you don't make your living as a "content creator", and that's a good thing! But what you do post is a pleasure to watch. I just discovered your channel, so im going to enjoy piling through the rest. Cheers!
Thank you! I appreciate you being here. My take on the whole content creation thing is a bit different. I have learned so much from so many creators and I am glad they are here - and if they are making a living from this, I love that for them. I would love to be able to do that. Having said that I think your point stems from the people who do dumb dances or post for the sake of being seen. I wholeheartedly agree with you there!
@@katdbass I hear you on that. I know I have benefited as much as anyone from the content that's out there, and even found amusement in some of the dumb stuff. But I do still have a bit of an "old school" appreciation for those who obviously spend much more time developing their craft and performing in the traditional sense - in front of real people, and less fiddling with cameras, lighting, etc. Though I do appreciate much of the content that's out there, part of me still has to see truth in the phrase a TH-camr / medical doctor I was watching once said, "TH-cam influencers will rule the world....., once all the useful people are dead and gone". Yeah, so my view of TH-camrs can be a bit paradoxical. 🤷♂️ But still, I dig your stuff, and look forward to seeing more 😉

Thank you so much Catalina! Your smashing pumpkin covers are amazing. I have learned so much from watching your videos. Thank you for putting this out. Really appreciate it. 😀
Thanks for the great video - earned a new subscriber. I agree best way to learn is small pieces of a song at a time. John Paul Jones is definitely a great one to learn from. I’m also focusing on Van Morrison songs and the Beatles for lines 🇺🇸
Hi David. Yes, JPJ is one of those people that can be studied for an entire lifetime. You've got good influences right there - I would also agree that Sir Paul McCartney's playing is quite unique and definitely an inspiration to many, including myself. :)
I could perhaps make a quick video about this! I'm an absolute fan of whatever the song needs. I find both ways of playing super fun and worthy. How about you?
@@gregmarquis1886 I want to make more covers. That is an absolute yes. You are actually not the only person that has asked me about the lesson thing. I will think about it. I'm just terrified lol
If you use musical terms to give instruction please know your definitions. You mention staccato to accentuate a note. Staccato and tenuto defines the length of the note. The accentuation of a note is more - accent.

Was it D'arcy Wretzky who sometimes played a bass with rat stickers on them like this?
Yes. She used the black P-bass during the Gish era mostly.
