This is an awesome Tip! The most difficult issue I have is translate this to latin notation(do - re - mi - fa - sol - la - si). I live in Chile and used to live in Brazil. All music schools teach with that notation....
Older bass player here and I am actually going through this right now! Just had my first lesson and I am embarrassed by my lack of knowledge of the fretboard. Getting back to those fundamentals that i skipped over the years. I will put this technique into my tool box. Thanks!
Same here. Started playing bass at 15, I am now 70. This is a great lesson I should have been made aware of decades ago. I will be doing this lesson. Great Video!
I’m right with you. I got my bass 25yrs ago, and just spent nearly £6k on a new one. This is such a simple tip, but really smart at the same time - more to the point, one I needed! Instant sub!
Really enjoyed this lesson Grant! At 43 (not that I old I guess?), I didn't want to rely on shapes and tabs more than I needed to and knew that fretboard knowledge could be the difference between an average bassist and a great one. Will give your advice and approach a try for sure!
As someone who has had the same experience as yourself, you are spot on. A lot of the students I have encountered know box shapes but they don’t know what the notes are. I agree that knowing the notes and where they are will unlock a ton of possibilities in and out of practice.
Definitely an older bassist here (62+). Too preoccupied with learning shapes and reading TABS and forgetting basics. This is my new project and my focus - thanks for the direction.
I am new to the channel. I am also a older bass player and you are exactly exactly correct in my case. Thank you for sharing this with me. I’m sure it’s gonna make a big difference in my bass playing!
Thank you teacher, I am four years into this bass life and I’m stumped and hit the panic button because it doesn’t register what note I am on. Great technique to apply,as I continue to progress!!
Recognized that this is super important from the very beginning. So much so, that I now put masking tape over the tabs on sheet music and have gone back through earlier material and played exercises at different octaves or on alternate strings.
One of the best things a bass player can do is learn to read bass clef. It’s not as hard as many make it out to be. That will help a bassist learn the notes on the fretboard, the key of the song, and enhance your ability to play orchestrated music with other musicians and instruments.
Learning the dots on the E and A strings works well to quickly identify the in-between notes and the Octaves on the other strings. I also noticed from the E to G strings are 4 intervals between each string and from G back to E strings are 5 intervals between each string. Perhaps that may help to continue expanding fretboard knowledge.
That was great. It was really helpful, thanks. I don't know if there is an extensive lesson on fretting techniques such as hammer on, slide, pull off, etc
Wow,this is excellent! I can play most songs I hear by ear. But,if you were to ask me what notes did I just play...I couldn't tell you. Have even written a few tunes!lol I'm starting over to learn the fret board. What was I thinking? Thanks a bunch!!!
Tip: use your tune pedal to learn them WHILE you sing the note! Singing, for sure, it's the best way to learn them (I can't remember the notes but I remember the sounds lol). What would you think of someone who learnt all the theory but long-term memory just can't get it? I'm so bad remembering things I read but I can remember things I see / listen to. Like, I don't remember the notes… But I can point them on the bass if I listen it. I'm one of those that has the auditive / visual skill. Same way as gipsy here play guitar but don't give a f* on notes, yeah I'm on the same boat. I will try again with yout trick. This will be like the 20th time I memorize them (hope I don't forget again).
Interesting. I’m an older self taught player needless to say i don’t read music and i know a few notes immediately but not enough. I’m going to try this it makes sense to me and shouldn’t be that hard thanks.
Knowing that fretboard saves lives. Been playing for over 20 years and I still practice scales, in every hand position and finger exercises. Can’t do the basics, then you can do the bass. 🫡
Guess I’m the exception. I would fall asleep with the bass on top of me going up and down a string at a time just calling out the notes and making sure I fretted properly. In college I found out getting a book on sex from the library when you’re in puberty is weird. I read it twice.
@@grant_r_d I have my first gig on Tuesday. After that, I'm going to re-watch your video and try learn the letters. Right now, all I know is the string and fret number. It feels debilitating.
I think tab would be so much more educational if it had note letters instead of fret numbers (with apostrophes from the 12th and up e.g. E E' E"). We'd get used to it quicker than we'd expect.

Me too, been playing bass longer than this guys been alive, but still don’t know where my notes are.
That’s Great :) It’s very important :)
I'm an old guy who began my bass journey 2 months ago. I think this is great. Thank you.

A very simple and effective way to learn the notes on the bass fretboard thank you. Will be back to check out your channel
Awesome, thank you!

tHIS WAS MY GOLDEN MOMENT,OF UNDERSTANDING ALL OF THIS. THANKS.

Very nice, easy to follow
Your system is very logical and doable. I will give it a try. Thanks!

Very clever way to simplify memorize this. Thank you!

@@grant_r_d But can you make a lesson on the fretting techniques
This is the best guidance ever! Do you have suggestions that help with playing simple triads on the fly, major and minor? Shapes, etc.? Thanks! ☮️❤️
Thanks :) I’ll make a video about it :)
@@grant_r_dthat would be really great!!!
Can you help out with playing a bass playalong with the notes position shown on the bass
Thanks this is really helpful. Ill have to add the B string and then the 12+ frets
Thanks :) Best Of Luck :)
Since today I want to follow you… congratulations!!!
Thank You :)
Very insightful!
Glad you enjoyed it

Hey everyone! I’ve been playing bass for a grand total of 3 months! In my mid 30’s! Loving the journey so far! Still working on my slap bass though!
Nice work!
an easy way thx
Thank You :)
What if you have a 5 string
Lean the dots on the low b string
Guess I’m the exception. I would fall asleep with the bass on top of me going up and down a string at a time just calling out the notes and making sure I fretted properly. In college I found out getting a book on sex from the library when you’re in puberty is weird. I read it twice.
That's me! Um, hmm. 🤔😂
LoL… :) You’ll be right man, just practice this and you’ll be set in a few weeks… :)

I love it, from a visual standpoint, implementing it for this blind guy is where I see difficulty 😉
