2009 r1 engine rebuild | $2000 Yamaha r1

  • This is how i rebuilt a 2009 yamaha r1 with no special tools. This bike we got it and it had a terrible rod knock and we took it apart and found out that one of the connecting rod bearing overlapped each other. The cranks was slightly damaged so we sanded it down and installed brand new bearings on the connecting rod. We bought the bike for about $2000 dollars. It had a graves exhaust system that retails for $1500 and we spent $200 in parts to get it running. Probably one of the cheapest r1s in the country considering the performance exhaust that was installed. Hope you guys enjoyed the video.

    Maybe the best lesson you could teach your kids. Awesome video mainly son/father spending time learning and teaching on such an amazing machine like the Xplane R1. I love mine and consider it the best sportbike ever made for sound, power and handling feel. Thanks for sharing and congrats on getting her back up and running properly.

    I applaud your efforts to get your hands dirty but honestly this is not the way to do fix this spun bearing issue.
    You literally need to pull the heads, block , transmission, each piston and rod. Every single part of this engine had to be pulled out, measured, and cleaned because every inch from the head to the oil pan has little shavings of bearing material from the original bearing that the crankshaft ate up. On top of that you need to take the heads, block , and cases to a machine shop to get hot tanked and completely boiled out because you can’t clean those oil galleries because you can’t reach them. So all those parts need to be hot tanked.
    First start with the crankshaft. It needs to be checked for microscopic cracks. Especially a cross plane crankshaft. Now I worked as a Yamaha dealership tech and even tho we didn’t rebuild these we still had to semi disassemble these engines and pull the crankshaft out and measure it in order to get corporate authorization to replace their engine under warranty. And in all the Yamaha engines I pulled apart (and it was a lot. 09-11 r1 had issues with spun bearings due to oiling issue that was resolved in 12+ models). So anyway out of every crankshaft I ever pulled from a spun bearing cross plane R1 engine. Not a single one was re-usable or serviceable. Motorcycle in-line 4 cylinder crankshaft are not like the old Chevy V8 crankshafts. Sport bike in-line 4 crankshafts do NOT do well when turned with oversized bearings or even a polished journals. Once the crank pin out of round is out of spec or there is the slightest gouge on the journals, that’s it. It done. You need a new crankshaft (especially cross plane crankshafts as they are heavier then flat plane crankshafts). Just what you were doing to polish the journal did more harm then good. You even saw the excessive oil clearance with the correct color bearing thickness. Now you’re gunna play with the different thickness sizes till you find the correct one with the least oil clearance. And I get it. You want to get the bike running. But this is NOT the way to do this. It’s gunna break again. And what if it throws a rod through the case and some case debris gets into the swing arm and lockup the rear wheel while you’re on a highway at highway speed. You’re dead. Or the poor guy you sold the bike to who never knew anything about this makeshift backyard repair.
    PLEASE UNDERSTAND IM NOT FAULTING THE OP FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO NOR AM I SAYING THAT THEY BUY SPUN BIKES AND DO MAKESHIFT REPAIRS TO FLIP THEM. I saw the video and I’m just speaking from my education and experience with this same engine. That you cannot just change out the affected bearing with one that fits with the best oil clearance numbers. It will break again and could cause the rear wheel to completely lock up at high speeds. And there are people out there that will buy a bike with bottom end engine damage ,rod knock, and lack or oil damage. They can pull the engine out. Do exactly what you saw here. Button it up real nicely and sell it to someone. And it usually won’t last more the 250-500 miles. You have to either tear the engine down correctly, measure everything and compare it to the spec and service limits in the shop manual. Pistons , rings, bearings , gaskets, springs, and a ton of other things. Even the external oil cooler needs to be replaced because that bearing material will find itself between the new bearing and crankshaft journals. I’ve seen a piece of old bearing material find a permanent home presses right into one of the journals that were still good. So you need to literally pull every part out of the engine case and clean , inspect, and measure, then make a decision to either re use it or replace it. That’s why we never rebuilt engines in the dealership. We would order a new one. But if it was warrantee work. Or recall work (I also worked at a bmw motorrad dealership and we had 2012 s1000rr engines blowing up at high speeds because at the factory in Germany someone forgot to apply thread locker to the connecting rod fasteners). So the point I’m trying to make is I pulled a lot of these in-line 4s apart and that spun bearing material is scattered anywhere engine oil can get to.
    Anyone who buys a used bike. Please always remember my comment. Check the engine cases for signs of someone opening up the case like the wrong color bolt or excess gasket sealant buildup along the engine case mating points. If possible bring a certified motorcycle mechanic with you. Because this type of repair could cause the death of the rider.
    I apologize to the op for saying something And I’m sure he probably didn’t know how dangerous it is to repair this problem without doing a complete engine re build with a new crankshaft.

    Nice video because of your dad. However, as certified Honda mechanic, I honestly believe that bike will run for only a few thousand miles before the rod knock comes back and a total engine failure. What was done was excellent as far as a temporary fix. In my professional opinion I would have change the crank and all rods and bearings if keeping it fo myself. If selling to someone else. It is a must do. Be honest, be upfront.

      @thachileandude  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Do RC that was the point of using oil to sand down the journals. Creates no dust and we wiped it down everything few turns making sure there wasn’t any excess material. Regardless if there was any material left in the engine will be trapped in the oil filter.

    The engine produces a lot of heat, so do not change the Tork specs next time. Those screw keep everything together, so at certain temp point there is no need for higher Tork.

I say this because most engines are assembled this way but you had the manual so you probably had more details on the initial 22 ftlb torque and then loosing it to 13 ftlbs. Just run 60 weight oil like Top Fuel dragster use, and change it about as often too. Oh BTW. I worked with a guy who ran a hot rodded VW dune buggy on coastal sand dunes in Oregon. It was a hot enough engine that it wouldn't have great engine life. More like a pretty radical VW race engine. He used to rebuild it and then after 3 to 4 weekends on the sand he would tear it down and put thin shim stock on the back side of the main bearings. Don't remember if he did the rod bearings too. I think it was just the mains because of the tendency of air cooled VW's that are built to 4 or 5 times original horse power figures to want to pull their case halves apart. Worked pretty well for him and got him a few more weekends of fun and less machine work.

    Im so confused lol. In the engine diagram it appears to be flat plane crank but in the teardown it clearly looked to be cross plane.. I've always understood the Yamaha R1 engine to be cross plane (uncommon for 4 cylinder configuration)
    It certainly sounds Crossplane. Crossplane engines always burble

    • @thachileandude

      Eric Christian the first year yamaha came out with the crossplane crank was 2009 only for yzfr1. Prior to that year the yzfr1 had a flat plane crank.
