    Easily the worst of the redesigns. WTF happened? Did they seriously look at the 60s version and think that was a better design than what they had?

    I think The Riddler us the most under appreciated and barely used villans.
    The Riddler's biggest superpower was his outstanding intelect. While most people would use such a gift for things like chess or scientific discovery, The Riddler comes off as what today would be this "Black Hat Hacker" persona. Interested in puzzles, and making puzzles evil. Maybe makig a Fifteen puzzle or a Rubik's Cube into some incindiary device or booby trap.
    Where most people today are hardwired on Pop Culture and Sports, The Riddler is this Academic Supervillan. The kind of guy who'd go on Jeopardy, school Alex Trebeck and steal from Ken Jennings. If anything, he's now this evil super-nerd.

      That's why I love character, he was the first of Batman's Rouge's gallery to battle him with intellect, rather brute force. He was a guy who was so fixated on outsmarting everyone he met and so arrogant to believe he would never be outclassed by such "primitive minds," as he would put it...... until the day he met up with Batman and has been hell bent on not only killing him, but outsmarting him. He once had a chance to give up all that and use his brains to actually make a life without resorting to criminal activity, but just couldn't do cause he wanted to finally out smart the big, black bat.

    • @homerdripson406

    The thing I liked about the Riddler in The Animated Series is that he was actually smarter than Batman. 90% of the time Batman couldn't solve the puzzles the Riddler lay out, but beat him by cheating or changing the rules of the game. It really gave a sense that there was a credible threat and a worthy adversary despite all the gimmicks.

    You could tell the writers were not keen on Riddler or Bane as both characters were so under used. Riddlers reform was the only decent Riddler episode in the series.

    • @MrVolcomclassic

    • @ETH5626
      @ETH5626 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What was it about the riddler that they didn't like? Was it that he had complex riddles that they couldn't Incorporated into the show? I find that hard to believe cause that 2004 cartoon show The Batman's Riddler managed to pull it off and had more episodes then the TAS version. Same with Bane for that 2004's cartoon cause i find Bruce Timm's lame excuse for TAS Bane "he's too gimicky" very weak.

    • @rodster6campingprepper

      +rodster6 And i call bullshit on that seeing as how 2004's The batman did well with it's own version of the Riddler. I don't care if that version looked like Marilyn manson. I base my POV not on his appearance, but on how good with riddles he actually used. His every sentence was some kind of riddle, and his "knowledge is power" philosophy fit very well Because that's what the Riddler is supposed to be: a villain that makes you think. Something Bruce Timm and the gang FAILED to do with their TAS Riddler.

    I didn't like the change from the first "Batman TAS", they say thay wanted him to look smarter, but really, I'd take more seriously the first image of the Riddler (the one with the suit and tie) rather than the new one that looks like a leotard.

    Would have intrigued if Riddler did an episode of Superman: The Animated Series where Riddler would try challenging Superman as the ultimate brawn with him the ultimate brain. The concept of Riddler being a 'Saw' oriented deathtrap criminal would work, even more interesting if he was tied to Task Force X.

      Also, in the Adam West series, the first guy to play Riddler (Frank Gorshin) did his best to make the character more serious AND that bowler cap and suit look we all love? Frank Gorshin designed it. If it weren't for him, Riddler would still always wear that darn jumpsuit all the time.

    I agree with your points. I Prefer his first TAS incarnation. Yes, Jim Carey did a brilliantly fun and mad Riddler, but it wasn't OUR Riddler. It was just a smarter Joker in the movie and the old TV series. But this one was dignified, smart, arrogant, and presented such a showmanship and bravado as to make viewers love his antics. It was all a fun game to the character, and life and death matter for others, while still being sinister, but not obvious, but subtle instead.

    @evans0305 I think the problem I have with the traps in TAS is that they seem a little too elaborate. If you watch the first episode he appears in "If you're so smart, why arn't you rich?" You'll see what I'm talking about. For example. In Arkham City, there's a trap where there's a row of spinning saw blades, the floor is electrocuted and a hostage is hanging above by a rope. It was as elaborate as I can believe RIddler can make it, but nothing too rediculous.

    The comics based on the show feature this version of the Riddler a lot (and the stories were actually quite good) and they actually managed to make the leotard outfit work. They eventually had him grow his hair back, put on a green suit and black pants though, which was a much better design.

    I was wrong, The Penguin will not be in this film, the Joker will make a cameo, entering Harley Quinn, The main Villain in "The Caped Crusader" will be The Riddler, hopefully portrayed by Johnny Depp. Philip Seymour Hoffman has been rumoured for further movies though. So that leaves a few villains, Mr. Freeze, who has not been rumoured at all or an actor for him, The Riddler, who is most likely going to be the main villain in the film, as all the rest are small and really dont matter Like KC.

    @Bacbi One of my favorite TAS episodes was If You're So Smart, Why Aren't You Rich? in which he gets revenge on his former employer by trapping him at the center of a giant robotic labyrinth which he had originally designed as a video game.
    I never saw any of them as threats persay, more as dangerous psychopaths who just happen to also be geniuses. With the Riddler it was his hubris, he was so full of himself that he couldn't help but tell you how he was going to do it in a condescending way.

    "Hey diddle diddle. Time for a riddle."
    It's from a Mother Goose nursery rhyme:
    "Hey diddle diddle,
    The Cat and the fiddle,
    The Cow jumped over the moon,
    The little Dog laughed to see such sport,
    And the Dish ran away with the Spoon."

    I think this Riddler WAS crazy, he was just extremely low-key about it... it takes insanity to think that erasing your personal history will accomplish anything, while declaring your previous life to be dead. "There is no Edward Nygma, there is only the Riddler," or something like that.

  • @AHPMB
    @AHPMB 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    I always thought there was a lot more potential for the Riddler as a villain than what they had him doing. He's essentially a narcissistic serial criminal, which means he should utterly lack empathy and be capable of all kinds of atrocities, limited only by his immense imagination, but they could never make him anything other than just kind of goofy.

  • @chuck000
    @chuck000 16 ปีที่แล้ว

    he's got OCD, he can't NOT leave a riddle.
    AKA HE'S MENTALLY INSANE, even though he's the most aware of batman's enemies. he knows what he's doing, but he can't stop.

    While I could not have seen Depp or Murphy playing him, I can picture Riddler in a Nolan movie. He would be more like Jigsaw from the SAW movies-he would kidnap prominent intellectuals and put them in death traps where they have to figure out how to survive, thus pitting his mind against theirs. And he would deliver his most sadistic lines in a very bored, detached kind of way, because to him the victims are not people, they are just numbers in an equation.

    The Riddler only got 3 episodes but they were 3 high quality episodes.

    I could see Riddler in a Nolan film, but he'd be different from his traditional characterization. I picture a version more like Jigsaw from SAW, who kidnaps prominent and powerful people and puts them in death traps so they have to figure out how to survive, thereby pitting their minds against his. He would not take delight in his crimes, he'd be bored by them-because to him they are numbers in an equation, not people. But he'd get excited matching wits with Batman, someone as smart as him.

    lets clear things up a bit shall we? Scarecrow (formerly doctor Crane) used to be a psychologist who was obsessed with fear and its effects on people. this led him to experiment with a substance known as "fear toxin". The Riddler AKA Edward Nigma has severe OCD, going so far as to say that he is physically unable not to leave a riddle that would thwart his crime. he has a genius level IQ and is obsessed with proving himself to be batman's superior.

    Not for the Golden/Silver age Gorshin-esque Riddler. For that he was perfect, and that's the version they went with. I thought Two-Face was bad, but I think Carrey's Riddler is very underrated because of how modern audiences percieve the character post ANIMATED SERIES.

    has anyone considered crispen glover as the riddler. he was rumored for the joker for dark knight before heath ledger was announced but i think he's do an intense riddler like when he was in Willard. He'd have the quiet intensity as opposed to heath ledger's manic joker.

    It has definitely been confirmed that there will be at least one more movie but no one knows who is going to be the villians just yet. As a matter of fact, there have been rumors that Catwoman might be in the third movie as well as the Riddler rumors. So for now, it's all up in the air until Nolan decides to release info on the third movie. Though I must say he has his work cut out for him because it's going to be tough as hell trying to top the Dark Knight.

    @Rantincorporated Ironically, the face of AC Riddler looks more like Jon Glover, who voices this Riddler and kinda sounds a lot like the one from AA and AC.
    Also, if you mean that Riddler's traps in AC were like Jigsaw, then that's not that different from TAS Riddler, since Riddler in the comics and in TAS had traps just as elaborate.

    If they bring out the Riddler in the new movie series they should look into an internet based villain. The old style of riddles wont work in the age of Google and Wikipedia, since one net search can solve just about anything. Having the character take advantage of the massive amount of information available online could create some truly devious puzzles and a dynamic supervilian for a new age.

    The Riddler's redesign was the only one I ever really had a problem with. I just liked the suit that he wore in the animated series better. He didnt really appear very much in the new series. To my knowledge - he only appeared in "Over the Edge", ""Judgement Day", and a Superman episode called "Knight Time".

    Batman has only had one origin. His motives and purpose are clear. He has a real name, you can take off the mask and he still exists.
    This has never been true of the Joker. He doesn't have a good backstory, he doesn't have a good psychology or motivation.
    He is just the random manic enemy that the writers toss in to fill whatever role they happen to need at the moment.
    And he stands unique amongst long-used characters for that, for no other character has so many blanks in their profile.

    I loved Gorshin as the Riddler! He had such a infectious laugh, but he was quite a scary villain in some aspects he just had this sort of evil indertone that Carrey didn't. I mean I did like the movie, but he seemed like a child throwing a temper-tantrum. Still I see what you mean, both were very flamboyant and just forced you to smile (not like the though, Joker you know?).
