I'm not too sure if this is practiced in operatic arias. The vowel can be added to the "n" as well. If I remembered it correctly, such a combination "n+e" is called "Italian n."

Carreras was one of the great tenors early in his career, but something terrible happened to his voice. His voice became very strained and frankly awful to listen to. Eventually he stopped singing entirely.
This is nasty. He attacks the first note with a "bark." Whatever legato he possesses is ruined by his overly accented vowels - not to mention scooping and minor pitch problems. This is certainly not Carreras at his best.
