This could be one of my all time favorite videos. Please share Brett planting his garden with us! It was so nice to see him out there working the soil and preparing his plot. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Seeing the other boys at dinner was great too... I got a giggle out of the cutlery clanging in the sink at the end. Buggy's "Bye" at the end always makes my day! Thanks for sharing, Ben and Meg! Heather🇨🇦
It is so exciting to see Brett advance with his love for gardening. He's always been with you for all projects, which is amazing, but to see him have his own passion for it is wonderful. Good job Mom & Dad...you're raising them right. ❤
I love that Brett has his own garden. I have found toads are great for keeping the squash bugs in check. When we added a 25' x 30' garden pond in the middle of our garden the frogs and toads moved in. The toads use the pond for breeding and the toads hang out under the squash plants. While I still have issues with the bugs the toads eat enough bugs to not kill the plants.
Love watching your boys mature. And I think it is more satisfying to cross off your list. You can go back and see what you have accomplished. When you delete from the phone it vanishes as if it never was.
I love the way that Meg cooks. I'm the same. Each meal is it's own thing. I don't measure. I add stuff and season along the way. I taste and sometimes change direction. Ask me to duplicate something and I'd be hard pressed to do that!
Way to go Brett. Soak up every bit of knowledge you can . You have some great teachers. God tells us to do our part and he will make it grow. Dad and Mom, you have some wonderful kids. I know you both are proud.
Thank you for posting again today, I never thought I would ever think of a you tube family being part of my extended family but that's how I feel about your beautiful family. I have been watching you all for so long now and I worry about you all as much I worry about my family. I laugh with you, cry with you, celebrate with you and hurt when your hurting. I have watched your boys go from children to young men and it is so interesting literally watching their personalities and interests in different aspects of homesteading develope. Jack likes ducks and along with Tyler has reared countless chickens over the last 4 years but he also enjoys cooking and it's so lovely watching him help Meg in the kitchen. Tyler definitely seems to be going down the path of building and constructing. Brett has gone from being your little mini me, following you around and helping develope the homestead and watching absolutely everything you do, to now having a larger patch to grow things he wants to grow, I remember him recording himself planting seeds, that was probably 3 years ago and look where he is now - I wonder if he will be planting some of his own potatoes. Corbin looks like he is going to do exactly the same as Brett, becoming the new mini me and learning everything he can. Buggy 🤗 what a little sweetheart. We all went through Megs pregnancy hoping and praying your home would be ready for when the baby arrived and as soon as your home was finished enough to move into out she came and she is such a beautiful little person and loves helping Mum and Dad with absolutely everything. Saying all of that the boys and Buggy are like they are because they have the most wonderful parents and role models, I hope this doesn't sound condescending but well done for raising 5 amazing young people. Thank you Ben and Meg for sharing your life, working on a homestead raising as much of your food as possible is a full-time job, adding to that recording videos as often as you do, it is no wonder you take the very odd break because the only time you ever really take time out of recording is if you are ill. So again thank you, it's hard to put into words how grateful I am to you all for making me feel l better when I watch your videos. Love to you all xxxxxxx
@@martharentfro6991 I love having it everywhere! It's great mulch for plants, the roots bring up good nutrition when planted under trees, and I make liquid fertilizer from the leaves. :)
I love seeing Brett's interest in gardening!! One of my neighbor's son was like Brett, loved gardening. By the time he was in high school he actually had a huge garden he tended himself. As produce ripened, he started selling produce at the local Farmers Market. He did that several years until he graduated. So next year maybe you can give a bigger garden spot to Brett so he can raise more crops!! Yeah Brett, way to go!!!!!👍🥰
S young boy in our Horse 4H group couldn't get help for that passion so he quit and started gardening. Something he could do at home on his own. He grew more & more as he grew and started a farm stand at home. He bought his own pickup truck & later paid his way thru college. His farm stand at home now is the most popular in our area bcuz people have come to realize that he does all the work himself & want to support him. Now his Grandparents live closer to the family & they help him by tending the farm stand for him while he's busy with college & working in his field size garden. Maybe this is the direction that Brett will go. A young man can have some good pocket change with a little work and a farm stand.
I really enjoyed seeing you encouraging your son in his interest and working beside him. Children are sponges. They absorb things from books, people, and their own experiences. 😊
The comfrey is getting ready to bloom. It can become a problem child as it will fly and take over the place. I used to let it bloom, feed the pollinators, but as it started to fade I wrapped the blossom stems with tule. Given another week or two, you can cut that stem hang it up side down, and let it dry. The seeds are great for infusing.
Brett's garden will be beautiful, simply because he watched everything you guys have done for years, or actually helped do all. He'll be a great gardener for years.
💚 That garden area of Brett's will do great with all those awesome amendments and his hard work and passion! The tomatoes look great in the high tunnel, all trellised up. Hopefully your plan to plant squash later will result in many less squash bugs (love the comments about how toads can help by eating them!) 💚
Tomato plants look amazing. I think it’s awesome Bret wanted to make his own garden and he looked serious doing it. Keep us updated on his garden please!!!
I, too must physically write information to best retain it. In college friends would ask how I could read my notes (very messy) and I'd tell them I almost never have to read them. The act of writing them accomplished the task. Have a Weedless Wednesday!!
I let my children pick a growing project every year. They take care of it, harvest it if needed, etc. We've done things like tire planters with flowers, sunflowers, peanuts, a pallet herb bed, etc. Something that they can learn from, so something cool, whatever they want. It's so much fun! Good for you Brett!! You could sell and make some money off of it for a vehicle 😉 my daughter made and sold yeast rolls for a couple years and just paid cash for her first vehicle! She's very proud, as are we.
Such great encouragement for Brett!!! Your help on his garden had to mean a lot to him…he’ll remember that all of his days💜! Little Buggy has such a great personality and what a smiler she is😘!
I really like it when the next generation gets interested in the process of building up the soil & planting the garden. That means your generation, their generation and possibly the next generation will have the knowledge of how to grow & process their own food. And of course they all help Meg from time to time which is teaching them how to cook what they are raising. Bonus!
It does work, planting squash later in the season I just started my zucchini and yellow summer squash plants, I accidentally last year planted a zucchini plant late like mid July, and I had zero squash bugs or vine borers on my plants and I got a good many squash as well.
Add some row covers and you'll be doing great. Put up bat boxes & bluebird houses to encourage them to come. Bats eat about 2,000 per night & bluebirds 1,000 everyday. That should help you.
And he’ll remember you forever. When I was a kid, I had an older neighbor(grandmother type) that took up time with me. I was around 3 years old. We eventually moved away and lost touch. But….I still remember her very well.
Be very proud of planting the seeds with the young man. I was 8 years old when I would spend weekends at my grandmothers house. She was an avid gardener from the depression era. I was 11 when I had my first garden and to this day a gardening freak. I am 65 now. Be proud of your teachings.

Brett hopefully you'll have a fruitful garden this year. Blessings to all.😊🇺🇲
Watching Buggie taking a taste of the veggies going into the pot, looking so adorable, I prayed that God would bless her, and He told me that He loves ALL His children in that way. Even if we live to be over 100 we are all still precious to him and still that child in regards to life eternal. Yes, He LOVES us all, so much that He Gave his Son for us that we might live, and if he gave up His Son how then can he hold back any good thing from us? We are all precious in his sight, like Buggie. :) Rom 8:31,32
Yes ! Although, I would say that God does, however, often sort of " withhold" good things in this life, as in, not miraculously intervene and always heal us or grant us things we'd like, even very good things. I don't say this lightly and by no means mean to discourage anyone from any prayer or hope they may have, but our faith does need to be in God Himself, not in what He does or could do for us in this world. Not meaning to get into this just based on a tiny thing you said, but also seemed possibly worth it/important enough. Don't want anyone taking any Biblical phrase out of context and ending up hurt, confused or stumbled by it ! I encourage everyone to read the Bible carefully and prayerfully. In it you'll find that yes, God loves you just like the above comment says, there's just more to it when it comes to comparing what He may allow, for eternal, spiritual reasons, to what we as parents would ( or should) allow for our children.
@@ajb.822 Yes, ones faith does have to be in God, and Jesus said "according to thy faith be it done unto thee". Healing may take time, like difficulties on ones life, and for that reason we must "stand, stand therefore".James teaches on faith and wavering, etc. This is why we walk by faith, believing. Study with trust in the Lord. In Love, your friend.
Hope Brett’s garden area does well. Noticed the cat and Buggy came to the greenhouse to “help”. I continue to enjoy your vlogs and your family. Thank you for putting a smile on my face.
Buggy is on 🐈💩 patrol in the tunnel/greenhouse...as she learned to do last summer! I forget if it was Millies fault or the other cat...but they better not...when she's on guard!🧐...🤣🙃🙂🙃😆🙂 Great gardening Brett! Are you growing zucchini, long neck or crookneck squash? I love baby crooknecks in a squash, onion and cheese casserole! Good bye bye from Buggy, as always! Ya'll take care and be safe! Stay chill!
I live in rural area where farmers always had a paper pad in there pocket. The oldtimers still do. I love that he wants his own space! Awesome! Thanks for the video!
Plant nasturtiums all around your squash! I made a believer out of my husband last year. We lost ONE squash to squash bugs and it was bc my nasturtiums had not bloomed. Once they bloomed, no issues with them.
Something about this video really touched my heart❤️ Brett wanting to start his own garden to Buggies cute face tasting a frozen pepper to ringing the bell for dinner! Bless you all😊
Farmer Brett! Nice job helping him get his garden set-up for planting. That looks like wonderful stir-fry with rice Meg! Thanks for this video Hollar family!
Greetings from Australia. It’s interesting to hear you say “ when I write it it sticks”. As a former educator, that’s what we’d tell the students. When you write, you’re creating different neural pathways and links in your brain. That’s the scientific explanation- you realised it yourself 😊. You’re a clever man and a great father & husband.
Great job on stringing up the tomatoes! I bet it’s nice to have the greenhouse now! Brett’s garden is going to be amazing! So nice to see the kids wanting to do their own thing. It’s hard to see them grow up, but if you’ve raised them right, like you all have, you can trust they’ll go the right direction in life! You are both amazing parents! Everything Meg cooks looks absolutely delicious! Buggy is as cute as ever! Your homestead looks even more beautiful!
Love learning new things from your videos but I think when your sweet little one says bye that’s my favorite part. Always looking forward to the next one
OMG I laughed so hard when the baby put the bell pepper in her mouth. And pull it out and look at it like what 😂😂😂. I love your channel mom and dad keep up the good work God bless
Whether it’s plants, fruit trees, animals, encourage each child to pursue their interests. They may compliment each other’s strengths and become a whole homestead.
Wow, Brett has grown a foot taller in the last few months! I can relate to him so much, being the middle child from a family of four girls and one boy. Always the peacemaker, helping when my parents load got to be too much. Soaking up all they had to teach me. Can’t wait to see how his garden grows,I have no doubt he’ll do a great job. God bless family.
I was 8 years old and spent many weekends with my grandparents who were avid gardeners from the depression era. I was 11 when I had my own garden and continue to garden to this day at 65. So everyone who can teach PLEASE do! I am so thankful that my grandparents taught me. I come from a family of 5 kids and I am the only one who gardens and grows my own food. They think I am crazy! Even my mom says...."just go to the store and buy it." "Why go through all that work?" They just don't get it.
It does makes a huge difference staking tomatoes. My tomatoes is petering out too hot over in my zone 9b FL to continue growing however, it was a good harvest since Nov 2022 now I have to prep for my fall seeds. I agree with you about the making notes. I have both 1) is a large binder with more detail notes what did and did not do well. 2) on my phone calendar with alarm. lol! Very admiring to see Brett working hard to prep his garden bed. 💜
Love your videos! Such a nice job! You keep it so real and simple and yet teach while you go about your way. Buggy is so adorable! A blessing! Your boys are awesome too! Meg is an amazing cook! His bless! 💕
Kudos to Brett. Very refreshing to see a young person take initiative these days. And the look on Buggy's face when she tried that piece of frozen pepper was priceless lol
When I know I have many things I want to accomplish the next day, I make a list. The things on the list don't always get all done but I cross out what did get done and add to it for the next day. I find this way I am a lot more productive. It's just way too easy to "accidentally" forget lol
I remember being Bret's age and wanting to do things entirely by myself. I, too, had a Dad that couldn't help but help. Rite of passage. One day Bret will remember his dad helping when he has to do it on his own, and he'll probably cherish the memory. Your children are all so smart and so talented - and hard-working!
🇦🇺Take the time to write down recipes 1/ For your kids - having mum’s hand written recipes is wonderful 2/ Write a cook book - extra income 3/ You just don’t know where it could lead. A second book - The reality of a homesteading wife and mother?
All the work you get through in a day, so many projects on the go, carrying a note book is a great idea. Encouraging Brent and his interest in gardening Is a win win. Each one has their talents and parents that recognise that and enable each in whatever direction they need are doing a good job. Well done you two. Your biggest challenge is still to come! As my much younger sister when her age used to say, I am the littlest boss😁 🌻🌻💕💕
Idea for a playlist on TH-cam… all the videos that you give a recipe for. Yesterday I started off with chicken & sausage and just kept adding to it.. vidalia onions, green onions, fresh parsley, cream of shrimp soup, all kinds of spices, okra & potato. It’s like a gumbo soup… mmm…so good! Oh and threw a biscuit in the middle like a big ol dumpling! LoL Way to go on wanting to learn how to do your own garden Brett!! Nice of Pop’s to do most of your prep work 😉 👋🏻 Byeeee baby girl! 🌸
My comfrey goes crazy , even after cutting it down, but hey its a good thing, its roots go down 8 feet to take nutrients other plants cant and chop and drop feed um all other plants and fruit trees, is a good thing.. yep write it down im the same way.. Good idea with the squash bugs..huh... Buggy is the bomb...lol
Want to tell you about Mother Hubbard Squash in 3 colors. Best tasting, very large, keeps long inside, just wipe off with a little bleach in water. Give space around each. Can sell them, the seeds also. I always cook my seeds with the squash, very nutritious.
A trick I use for my squash and night shade is beer.... I put small containers with a little bit of beer in it. It also helps with slugs. Something my grandma used to use.
If I recall correctly when you were pregnant with Buggy Bretts garden was the big producer while the main garden had a hard time. I also learned that year that watermelon juice will drown Japanese beetles
For years I have watched this channel and listened to Ben compliment his wife on her cooking and each time he does Meg’s responses vary from ‘good‘ to’ yes it was (delicious’) to ‘everyone enjoyed it’ but rarely have I heard Meg simply say‘ thank you, Ben.‘ I’m not criticizing, just observing, as I find she has a very odd way of responding to a complement. Ben’s expressed appreciation for his wife’s cooking and preserving and other kitchen skills are a good reminder to family members everywhere not to take these skills for granted if you are so blessed to have a Meg in your household.

And those flat pencils. My FIL always carried his around.
That young man is going to produce food to feed family and the endless bunch of joy brings smiles to everyone, talking about blessings....
Plant nasturtiums all around your squash! I made a believer out of my husband last year. We lost ONE squash to squash bugs and it was bc my nasturtiums had not bloomed. Once they bloomed, no issues with them.
You two are doing such a wonderful job parenting your 5 sweet kiddos. They will be a blessing to you in your old age!
I agree writing notes imprints better plus you have a list to remind you!! Old school works when there is no power:))
Something about this video really touched my heart❤️ Brett wanting to start his own garden to Buggies cute face tasting a frozen pepper to ringing the bell for dinner! Bless you all😊
That is so awesome that your son wants to plant a garden 😍. I can tell he is going to be just like you.
You go Farmer Brett, yea. Can’t wait to see what is planted. 🌱
Good job Brett! Also to y’all for raising those kids up the right way! ❤
Farmer Brett! Nice job helping him get his garden set-up for planting. That looks like wonderful stir-fry with rice Meg! Thanks for this video Hollar family!
Love seeing Brett's Garden again. The new family pictures on your profile is really nice
You know Brett is going to have a beautiful little garden WITHOUT the squashbugs....
Little bella steels it every time.. she's so adorable
I planted my squash in early May, and I put marigolds all around them and so far no bugs and still producing
My dad always had a note book before he passed (that's my keepsake)🙏💕🥰
Thanks for bringing us along for tidbits of your busy lives! Great family & always things to learn from you all. Blessings to all 🤗💜🇨🇦
Love learning new things from your videos but I think when your sweet little one says bye that’s my favorite part. Always looking forward to the next one
OMG I laughed so hard when the baby put the bell pepper in her mouth. And pull it out and look at it like what 😂😂😂. I love your channel mom and dad keep up the good work God bless
Awesome job working in garden n helping your son with his little garden bye bye Ms. Buggie have an awesomee nite sweet dreams
Whether it’s plants, fruit trees, animals, encourage each child to pursue their interests. They may compliment each other’s strengths and become a whole homestead.
Bret amazes with his yearning to do his own garden. Love it.
Old timer tip on squash bugs. Early morning they are at the top of plant. Pick and stomp.
Little Buggy is the most beautiful little girl that I think I’ve seen 😊❤Precious
No need to recap all that’s been said in comments, so I’ll just say Brett you’re just as amazing as the rest of the family 👵🏻👩🌾❣️
Bret you’re doing a great job with your veggie patches. Keep it up 👍👍
Love your videos! Such a nice job! You keep it so real and simple and yet teach while you go about your way. Buggy is so adorable! A blessing! Your boys are awesome too! Meg is an amazing cook! His bless! 💕
Such a wonderful video; thank you.
Kudos to Brett. Very refreshing to see a young person take initiative these days. And the look on Buggy's face when she tried that piece of frozen pepper was priceless lol
Your comfrey is normal. It’s about to flower. It has really pretty purple flowers.
Cooking is a system. I cook by smell, feel and taste. So I understand Meg.
Loved seeing Brett gardening!
So cool that Brett wants to plant, too!
So special to see you working with your boy. He always seems so keen on gardening xx
I’ve read that planting radishes with squash it repels the squash bugs.
When I know I have many things I want to accomplish the next day, I make a list. The things on the list don't always get all done but I cross out what did get done and add to it for the next day. I find this way I am a lot more productive. It's just way too easy to "accidentally" forget lol
Cheering you on Brett! It’s exciting to grow your own garden spot. I’m excited for you too! You look lovely Meg.
🇦🇺Take the time to write down recipes
1/ For your kids - having mum’s hand written recipes is wonderful
2/ Write a cook book - extra income
3/ You just don’t know where it could lead.
LoL
Way to go on wanting to learn how to do your own garden Brett!! Nice of Pop’s to do most of your prep work 😉
👋🏻 Byeeee baby girl!
It’s so awesome to see Brett’s interest in farming. I’d enjoy hearing his prospective of living on a farm.
That’s a mighty fine garden, young man! Great job!
If I recall correctly when you were pregnant with Buggy Bretts garden was the big producer while the main garden had a hard time. I also learned that year that watermelon juice will drown Japanese beetles
Thanks for the visit
So true I love that saying life without salt.....
Spiffy? Roasty toasty? You sound like a Kellogg cereal commercial!
