My first wife put a pot of water on the stove for tea and then fell asleep. The water evaporated, and then the aluminum pot melted into the burner of the electric stove such that it could not be pulled apart. I had to buy a whole new burner for the stove and replace it. Thus the joke that she could burn water. Maybe that is why she is an ex wife. Although I blame it on the never ending soap operas and romance novels she consumed. Who could live up to those standards? Fabio I am not.

Great suggestions on the canning, Meg! We have quarts and quarts of heirloom Crowder peas ready to can and this may be just the game changer we need. We first grew these peas that came from a 15 year old jar of dried peas that came from my grandfather's farm, then have seed saved ever since. They volunteer like crazy, too, at least here in the N. GA mountains. I'm going to use this method when we get the canner going this season. We rarely eat peas anymore (we eat mostly beef, butter, bacon and eggs), but when we do, they're amazing, and it seems prudent to keep growing them, considering the world we find ourselves navigating now. Good protein when/if the meat runs out! Thanks for the tip to Jessica at ThreeRivers and you, Meg. I've enjoyed your channel for years now. It's amazing how time flies. ~Cynthia

How sweet to know that you appreciate Jessica from Three Rivers Homestead too. LOVE your newlywed pasta story! Reminds me of trying to cook the rice new Hubby's mom cooked. This was ancient, pre-texting days mind you, and she'd written to tell what brand to buy at the military commissary where we were in Germany. Nothing on the bag mentioned rinsing. I wrote back to her and said something along the lines of 'are you sure he loves that rice? It was a big glue-y mess and nothing like what my mom always made' (MJB rice). Her next letter revealed that I was supposed to have rinsed it 3 times and she was so sorry she didn't mention it. She and I laughed over that so many times over the years. After another suggestion of a meatloaf recipe featuring a heavy amount of bulgur wheat with a huge dill pickle in the center of the loaf came out a complete disaster, I just loved on her and gave her recipes a very critical eye. (Yet so very many were STELLAR!) Keeping you and Baby Hollar in my prayers! Thank you for including your family's dinner prayer...it is much appreciated and hopefully a good teaching moment for those who might be seeking.

You guys need a harvest right dehydrator to powder your eggs so you use them in cooking or store in jars especially over winter when egg production is lower.

I watched this video when it first came out, but returned today to study how Meg cans her beans & who she referenced the technique with so I can do the same. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! This will make canning beans so much easier.

When I was growing up, e we had a Navy surplus bell mounted to the side of the house. It had to be 15 inches in diameter! When the bell rang, it was time to come home. It could be heard over a block away! Good times!

Yes save the bacon grease, working on the farm a freinds mom worked on a cattle ranch
. She cooked and made bread daily for the hands. Her recipe called for 9 cups of flour, tried to reduce the recipe but never came out right. But wonderful bread. And the smell, taste with home butter. Mom always prepared bean in the fall for quick meals and cornbread. Family of 7. Your a great cook. Blessing

    Meg - "That's okay, I don't mind."
That's a proud mama feeding her horde. 😄

I lived in Italy on five separate occasions for a total of over 18 years. Carbonara was one of my favorite meals. An Italian friend told me that the dish got its name from the fact that miners were served one meal as a part of their job working in the coal mines and carbonara was what the normally served.

I have one of those bells. All of mine are grown now, but they remember that bell. They were not allowed to go out of hearing range of it without permission. We lived in a small country neighborhood and all the neighbors knew what that bell was for.
